Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Thanks Bob,
I am already looking into convents for her lol

As some of you may know I am having a problem with her when I hit 4000 RPM. No matter what prop I am running the prop ventilates and or has cavitation. To remove the possibility of it being from the hull being rough and creating an air pocket. I started sanding down the hull today.

OMG what a job, 1st I power washed off as much of the bottom paint as I could, then I started sanding, and sanding and sanding........ my day is finished and I am only 1/2 way done. Here is a pic of the other side

100_1928.jpg

NOW FOR THE BIG ??????

I know that I really don't need bottom paint because its a trailered boat. I read here just to use rustolium ($30 a gal ;) )where the bottom paint used to be. My only other option seems to be Interlux VC17m at $54 per quart:eek: being 22' I need 1 gallon for 2 coats

Any thought???????

PS as you can see its already dark, I have been at this since 7:45am Man my arms are tired and hurting. Even doing this with a pneumatic DA sander its still a PITA

Hey Bill, how's things? For what it's worth, I used Tremclad paint, which is the Canadian version of Rustoleum, same company. I had it on my boat bottom for 3 years. It stood up quite well. And besides, you can't see it anyway. Just my 2 Canadian cents worth.

Hey Bill,
I feel your pain on the sanding. I'm sanding the hull too, but mine is still upside down. I wouldn't even want to think about doing it that way.
Sorry I can't help on the paint question.
Take care

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Hey TC Thanks for the input

Hi Bob,
yep this is a real PITA the boat is still on the trailer. It is really no fun playing contortionist under the boat with a DA sander.

3:30 am and I'm still arguing with myself over it one of the problems with using Rustolium is the choice of colors. the boat is off white and maroon, rustolium is limited, i am down to white, cream or leather brown.

I am leaning towards white or cream and putting a maroon boot stripe on it

Whatever I choose, its not getting finished this weekend :( I found 2 blisters I want to repair 1st.

EDIT- I was looking at the Rustoleum web site seen they have it in Regal red so I did a lowes search for rustoleum regal red & low and behold they have 4 quarts at my local store :D Guess the choice is made

LOL, I actually had nightmares about mosquitoes that woke me up at 3am this morning I get up and my wife shows me a bite she got during the night.

I am a real hurting puppy tonight. I didn't even finish ran out of sandpaper for the DA. I have 2' + the transom left to sand. Times like this I wish I had a smaller boat ;)
But all is good I went and finished power washing my parents deck so I can get it sealed.
Here is what she looks like now
100_1942.jpg

100_1940.jpg

100_1943.jpg

I left a small ribbon so I have a line to work off of. Once I pick up some painters tape I will sand her out while I tape.

She looks good without the bottom paint, I thought for a second about either repainting or gelcoat the entire boat and forget about the line. I wish the getcoat was in better shape and thicker. I would just wet sand, wax her and call it a day. One thing stopping me is I found 2 repairs under the bottom paint, one of them is a circle about 3" in diameter. I am really wondering what it could be from. I am in contact with the original owner I am real temped to ask what happened

Well it looks like ist going to be friday before I get back out on her. Tomorrow I have to finish the deck which leaves wednesday to finish sanding and paint the 1st coat. That makes thursday for the 2nd coat leaving fri-sat for splashdown

Hello Bill,
The boat looks a lot better now. Did you check to see if the Rusto could be tinted? Just a thought.
Good luck with the deck. I really hate to do mine. It's at least a three day event.
Take care

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Hi Bob,

I already looked into that, it can't be tinted :( . I thought about looking to see if Benjamin Moore has a similar paint to rustoleum that can be. I am still arguing with myself over color, now I am thinking maybe the almond with a brown bootstripe being that the interior is brown and the only other red on the boat is the gel under the cap .
I hate to say it but my mind is working overtime I have 2 gal of pettit white for the other boat, I am almost tempted to sand the rest and shoot the entire girl BUT I want to get her back on the water and out of my front yard.

Hi Ez,
I hear you on the 3 years to finish, I still don't have any interior molding on my 1st floor
I built their deck back in 96 as a birthday present for my dad, (today is his bday) and it hasn't been touched since. I have had to pressure wash it 3 times to get the dirt out of the cedar  and I still have to do the handrails today before I can stain and seal it tomorrow, hopefully.

I sanded the whole deck two years ago....never got around to staining it. I did the deck wash stuff last year....never got around to staining it. Even bought the stain then later returned it so it wasn't sitting all winter. Then this year I finally got it done. Ended up going with a more paint-like stain since my wood was pretty beat by this point. Looks nice though.

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Hi Ez,
This pic is for you LOL this is how I spent my morning, I started 7am I even power washed the house. Now all I have to do is re-paint the balusters and Thomson water seal the deck.
100_1960.jpg

PS all those weeds on the ground are vines I cut off the balusters and handrails. The had covered the entire front of the deck EEK

OK, that takes care of what I did this morning, here is what I did this afternoon

100_1973.jpg

I wound up going with the brown, I figured it would hide the dirt and water spots ;)

100_1984.jpg

100_1995.jpg

I did run out of paint, I have to get more tomorrow. I only bought 1 quart thinking if I didn't like the color I would get something else.

All in all I am pretty happy with it, I rolled and tipped and came out decent.
Rustoleum says 24hrs between coats so it looks like it will be a saturday splashdown :(

That brown good looks, Bill. It's amazing how much coverage you get out of a quart.

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Hey TC,

Well I figured about a gallon for 2 coats, with the quart I was able to do the starboard side, transom and the narrow strip above the chine on the port side. I'm thinking 3 1/2 quarts for a 2 coat job. I might give the keel up to the chines a 3rd, but not till after the weekend.

Hi BOB,
That is what I was thinking, I almost went with the almond but it wouldn't be an exact match to the boat. I figured She already has brown on her, the Cruisers lettering + a pin stripe so I wouldn't be introducing a new color.

EDIT- it still looks like a 1980's boat with that color scheme  But what the heck lol

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Hey Sprint,
Thanks, as far as getting the entire family out , I doubt if that will happen again. Like I jerk I took them out when Noaa was reporting seas at 2-3'

Hi Beta,
Hope all is well
I used 80 grit on a 6" DA sander. Before I started I washed the bottom down with simple green and a pressure washer. After sanding I used Palmolive dish-washing liquid scrubbed it good with my truck washing brush and power washed again.

I don't know if the way I do is is right, wrong, or indifferent. what I do know is with using dish hand soap and power-washing I wind up with no impurities. If you want to use anything else use either acetone or you can use prep-sol, you can get it at any auto body supply house, napa, etc.. Using those only wipe in one direction refolding to a new spot.

And don't forget you end up with soft hands too, using dish soap. :D
