Nice work. Anything worth doing is worth overdoing. The overdoing is a sickness but I can live with that :)

hi hvac...

as far as spending the extra money on the risers......i would. you will sleep better.

my boat has huge risers that stick up waaayyyy past the top of the carb....back flow waves could not in any way get thru the y to the top of the risers.....but i spent the extra 100 dollars and bought the exaust flappers any how.....and feel good that i did..

by the way,..... i didnt see in the thread......how you gonna get that motor out of the basement after you build it? ;)

Thanks Bob, Wives also hate it when your grinding fiberglass in the back yard when they want to have the patio doors open

Hey sprintst, Yep me too, I figured the little extra work was well worth it. the glyptal makes a huge difference over time with the cleanliness of the engine too.

Hey Oops, Congratulations on your splashdown, your boat looks great!

I bought a set of GLM manifolds and risers for the extra insurance. I also went to 4" I like that riser configuration better than the 3". They look like less of a chance for reversion. The flappers are good so I am going to reuse them.
Getting the engine out of the basement, hopefully my back will feel better, by then after carrying it down there by myself . Actually to get it out I have a aluminum I beam gantry I will setup over my bilco doors.
I am going to only build the short-block down there. I will put the heads etc on her after she is out put, her on my test stand and break her in before putting her in the boat.

Small Update,
After filing 32 rings :( almost finished the short block, well it is technically finished but I want to degree the cam just to make sure :) . If I get home early enough tomorrow I will slap on a head with an old gasket to degree her. I had to squeeze in the engine tonight after spending the day tiling a floor. Here is some pics of where I am now

HVAC I'm blown away by your attention to detail and knowledge regarding the new engine. For an OB guy like me it's a real education:)

Nice work, good luck with the rest of the project!

Thank you, My OCD kicks in when it comes to engines :D I'm just an old motor-head. Up until 2000 I had raced and built cars all my life. Even with that don't let the pics fool ya I it had been so long I had to fall back on the Merccruiser section of the forum and ask which way the bearing tabs went on the rod caps, same side or opposing:eek: . It has been so long that I doubted my memory for a second.

Me likey. That 6 pack will really make her fly...into the trees. :)
Brings new meaning to an alky fueled engine lol
BTW, this is the one aspect where I don't use my 1 beer per hr rule l  its more like 1 every 2-3 hrs

I looked at the cyl heads last night, not very happy with the porting job that was previously done by others, it looks real rough. After I degree the cam, hopefully tonight, they are coming apart and I am going to clean up the ports and pocket areas.
With the slight setback with the heads, I am hoping to have the engine finished by the middle of next week. I am arguing with myself of whether or not to bring it up to my pals in Middletown, or even to Jack Merkel and break it in and tune her on the dyno :D I'm also curious to see what this little 383 is going to put out.

Great looking project and nice job with the engine. Now thats some real power for the boat. The only engine I ever rebuilt was a VW air cooled. I swear I could rebuild one today with a good leatherman. I have really enjoyed following your porject. What does HVAC stand for ?

oh HVAC....... I thought it stood for Holidays Vacations And Commisions.

I am in the HVAC business myself its about ready to hit our busy time of year. I took today off before the blast hits on that first 80 degree day. Good luck I have really enjoyed your project. Your boat looks great! Nice project. I will continue to follow your project. I think one of your six carbs is running a little lean. Better make sure the bowls are full at all times.

Hey HVAC,
Just catching up on my reading. How do you intend to keep that 6 pack cold?
Perhaps a little nitrous.:p:D
The engine is coming along nicely.
Great work.

Nitrous Hummm I always wanted a 7 sec boat :D

Hey Damifudo- its not running a little lean, all of them are on empty :D

Well I took last night off from building cause it was a big T.V. night LOL spent a little couch time with wifey
This morning I FINALLY pulled off the gimbal, I am going to PL down the motor mount this afternoon and hopefully glass it in in the am. Right now I am working on the other boat project, just got finished doing the fillet for the fuel tank platform. Now I am trying to figure out how to adjust the splashwell to fit, turns out the Transom is thicker and there is a 1/2" difference in the sides of the boat
Well breaks over, back to work :)

That is real attention to detail. You're squeezing every extra ounce of HP out of her...

OK, While I wait for more epoxy for my other project, I jumped back onto this one, what can I say my A.D.D. kicking in lol. After realizing I was off almost an inch on the motor mount stringer I cut it back out. The bilge had a layer of glass over paint, which I knew so I figured I would grind it out while the stringer was out again instead of trying to work around it. excuse the poor cellphone pics, there was dust on the lens

glassOverPAint.jpg

I ground chipped, peeled and ground some more till I got to here on the starboard side.
IMG00379.jpg

I then repaired a little section that I ground down to the balsa core with a 1708 patch and gave the entire area a coat of epoxy

IMG00381.jpg

As you can see I need to do the port side next. I figured I would wait till I have the starboard mount in, grind the bad glass work and re-glass the entire bilge.

I figured while I was taking pics I would add an intimidating shot of the bow for SnowHunter ;)
