Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Well I had a bad day with the Sea Gem Today. I got out to it at 6:30 this morning and PL'ed the motor mount stringer in I had kindergarten orintation for caity at 10 so I figured it would be cured enough when I returned home to start glassing.
All went well I got home, and hit it with 2 layers of 1708 made sure there were no air bubbles, stayed with it for a 1/2 hr afterward making sure all was perfect. While waiting on it I went over to my other project and started cutting apart the rest of the deck, Ia remembered my grinder was on the Sea Gem so I went back to get it
AND this is what I found:eek:

IMG00388.jpg

A crazy amount of air bubbles on the one side :mad: I have no idea how it happened, there was plenty of resin all was completely saturated. Now I have to grind them out tomorrow and re-glass Grrrrrrrrr Thats not the worst of it though, if you look at my other project in a few I will be posting that DOOM & GLOOM :(

HVAC Cruiser,
Hey man, did you let Murphy move back in again?
That really stinks about the glass work. Glass can be pretty funny at times. The same thing happened to me a couple of times.
The good news is that it only take time, money and itching to fix it.
I hope you have a better day tomorrow.
Bob

How long did you let the Pl set up for? I thought that stuff needed to sit for 24 hours. I think it gasses out for at least 12 hours, and that might be where the bubble came from.

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Hey Bob, Yep Murphy is back at my place :(. He also hid one of my motor mount brackets, for the life of me I can't find it.

Hey Kenny, Thanks, I'm hoping this cloud passes by rear soon. I look at it this way its still not as bad as what I found on the other boat project. Air bubbles are a one day setback, a rotten core is weeks.

Hey Jay, She set up for 7 hrs, its very possible your right and I messed up by being anxious. It only bubbled on the inside that I show in the shot.

The PO had replaced the motor mount stringers before and glassed over the bilge paint, which it didn't stick to. I might do all my grinding now and get all the bad glass work off the other one too, clean everything up good and lay one piece of 1708 over the entire bilge and up the sides of the mounts to lock it all in.
The good thing is the outside glass work on the mount I replaced is fine, with it being the starboard mount this is the one the engine tries to lift off the hull when running it being clockwise rotation.

Hey bill,
Sounds like a good plan to get it all cleaned up, then get all the glass done at the same time. At least that way you won't be back in glassing again.
Like you said we have to look at the good points too, at least you only had to grind one side.
Take care.

Hey Bob,

Yep, that's what I figured too, hey remember when we discussed whether or not to replace both motor mount stringers?
WELL..... I am so glad I listened to you and others and built a second one, grinding out the old glass on the port side one, this is what I found

IMG00400.jpg

This is a perfect example of why you use 4200 on screws, it is water logged and starting to rot. Aside from that, they didn't round the corners so the glass was one big air bubble
I am just very glad the core didn't rot too. there is actually a layer of glass between the core and the mount.

I am getting in a shipment of epoxy tomorrow, so I am going to do my darnedest to get her prepped and ready today with the new mount glued down. Maybe I can put glassing to bed tomorrow :D.
Can't work on her Saturday its my sons communion, I am hoping to paint the bilge Sunday then get the boat cleaned up and the gimbal installed next week so I can put the engine in next weekend :)

After that it will be splashdown time Yippee

Wow Bill,
That was a good catch. Sometimes bad things, turn out to be not so bad. This is the time to find it out and fix it.
Splash down sounds great.
Good luck

This is very true, I took the port mount out yesterday, it was completely waterlogged.

Not much work to report, spent most of the morning grinding and sanding. I ground out all the bad glass that the PO had done, removed the port side motor mount stringer and even sanded the keyhole for the gimbal to give the exposed wood a coat of epoxy. when I thought all was good I gave all of it a coat.

Then I looked at this pic just now, I missed a huge air bubble in the front of the starboard mount + I never took out the screws from when I glued it together  . NO working on her today, in to much pain ( see Hijack zone) and its my sons 1st communion, have to be to church for 11am. Although everyone is still asleep I am tempted to mix up some PB real fast and install the port mount :D before wifey wakes up lol.

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

Now I'm really P.O'ed Do I have sucker stamped on my forehead or something???
It's a rainy day here so I figured I would do some cylinder head work. I sat down at my bench to start marking up what needs to be un-shrouded etc and disassemble the heads. I initially sent them to the machine shop for a once over and a standard valve job. WELL right off the bat I see BAD VALVES!!!!!!! 7 to be exact, the stem tips are hammered all to hell!!! I take a close look see carbon etc in the ports, the list goes on and on....... I start popping valves out and find my valve guide clearances to be from .003-.0047 WTF Intake should be .0015 exhaust .0025 MAX. Start measuring the valve stems and find some at .339, anything below .340 is junk.

I call my pal, its his machinist, and tell him, I really feel bad having to make the call cause my pal was only trying to help. He calls the guy, and all he can say is "Oops!!!!" bring them back I'll take care of it. A big part of me feels he was just being a crook and got caught.
So I am going to Brooklyn tomorrow to bring them back, right now I just want to shove them down his throat Grrrrrr. What I really want to do is tell him give me back my $300 and good ridden to ya

Thats why I'm waiting till tomorrow to go see him ;) so I don't do something He'll regret. Right now I would really like to shove them down his throat. The thing that gets me is I went over all of it with him and even shared why I am not using my machinist anymore. The guy was supposed to do a 14deg angle mill on a set of phase 3 bowties for me, charged me for it and didn't do it. That one I realized when I went to scribe the intake, and realized I didn't have to cause it matched up  .

I am starting to think they are all a bunch of crooks treating ya like a mushroom, keep you in the dark and feedin ya fertilizer !!!!!

HVAC Cruiser,
Man, You need to kick Murphy back out of the house.
Just be thankful that you caught it now and it's being corrected. Some folks just don't care.
On the good note the other mount looks good.
Take care.

Man that sox, ya halfway expect work like that from someone just trying to help, but to actually pay someone and get those results...your more patient than I am is all I can say....'good on ya' if you give em a chance to correct themselves...best to you!

Re: The R?surrection of the SeaGem

AT LEAST you have the knowledge and the tools to be able to double check the work before you just slapped the motor together and called it good, HVAC ;)

I would be clueless, other than catching the carbon on the valves...so good on you. As a matter of fact, it reminds me of when I had head work done and they came back cracked ( the shop showed me ) and sold me a set of heads that were already good to go. I put them on without thinking twice and couldn't figure out for the life of me why I couldn't get the plugs to go in on one side! Turns out they sold me two different heads...one took tapered plugs, the other didn't  I didn't notice anything different about how the car ran....but then again, it only took a few months down the road and I ended up rebuilding the whole motor through the same people, which ended up being a much larger fiasco that I won't get into here.

Needless to say, you saved yourself a ton of trouble just by catching this in the first place...Good Job! :D:D:D
