Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Clay,
Right now I have enough things to think about, first I think I'm going with the gel. then I look at other options if I don't like the results.
OK folks,
Here are a few pic's from last weekend.
This one is from the stern to bow and I think you can see how flat she is.

I still have a little sanding to do on this side before it is completely done but for the most part this side is done. The areas that still have gel on them it's only a very thin layer.
The Strikes I will do by hand when the rest of the bottom is done.
I now have half the bottom done. This is taking me a lot longer then I expected. I did break out the old belt sander and that cut my time in half. You just have to be carefull or you could go to deep in a hurry.
I have a couple areas that really look strange. It looks like Carmel instead of reg. fiberglass. Tell me what you think.

Everything else looks normal.
One last pic,
This is my handy dandy gel thickness gage.

I will be home again this next weekend to enjoy some more sanding.
At least it is progress.
Take care all

Amazing prep work. That is real straight and true with some crisp lines. Looks like it could be in a boat show when done :)

sprintst,
I don't know about all that. But thanks for the kind words. I am very pleased with the way it is coming out so far.

That is looking great Bob...if you get tired of sanding, eat some 60 grit sandpaper...it'll take the edge off of that rough feeling. :D

keep up the great work, this will be a beaut for sure!

Well now dammit Bob, now I'm feeling lazy for not wanting to sand off the gel on my hull. :p All I've got to sand with is a Porter Cable random orbital and 120 grit discs. Well, I've got the 7 inch sander and 80's, but that would get my into a heap of trouble fast, so I'm not touching the hull with that sucker. Perhaps it's time to invest in a cheap belt sander and some 100 grit belts? What grit did you use to take that down like that?

HSF,
Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate it. I'm trying to make it right. It Has been a lot of work but I think it will be worth it in the end.
Take care and thanks again.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Bob,

I like your thought process. Speaking only from my past experiences - I've done three boats using EasyPoxy. I'm a practical guy. It worked great the first time and why mess with success. The product is not two-part so it has a long working time. It glosses out beautifully. All of my projects were trailered boats and the paint held up great (although I never kept one of them over four years).

I'd love to see you work through the gel-coating process - but all the extra work does not seem to be worth it in the end (to me). I'd understand it if you were spraying into a mold like the new boat production process - but as a topcoat?

I finished my AMF Crestliner Crusader 995 project recently. I'm planning on painting it next year. Guess what I'll use....

Hey mrdjflores,
Glad to see you back, life always seems to get in the way sometimes. All we can do is try to roll with it.
Hey Redfury,
Sorry I missed your earlier post until last night. I attempted to respond last night but the hotel I was at, the INTERNET connection stunk.
I think I have 80 grit on the belt sander but I will have to check when I get a chance. It really does cut the time down but you really have to watch it or it will get away from you.:p:D

mrlassi1
The paint route may be the quickest and smartest way to go but I have now committed to going with the gel,
If it doesn't work out the way I want it too I will then look at the paint.

Thanks for th complement.
Take care everyone.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

I gotta get some 80 grit...these 120's are not cutting the gel fast enough. They work great for finishing, but for cutting the gloss down, just making tiny circles in the gel coat. I'd be here sanding until next Christmas if I keep this pace up. The one 40 grit I used to take off the rest of the adhesive from the boat numbers did a good job on it, but I don't want to have to try to sort out all those sanding marks!

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hey Redfury,
I agree with the 120 not being very fast, on my 5" orbital, even the 80 is slow. I really like the belt sander for the flat areas.
I'll be following your progress.
Take care

Hello everyone,
Not much to report, Spent a lot of time on the road last week and the stupid hotel I was in, Well, I just say the INTERNET connection stunk.
About all I have got done is more sanding. It is a slooooow process. I'm not sure how many pic's of sanding you really want to see.
Arch,
I hope that I can be with all of you on the lake next year too. I may even come out to your lake and join the group for a weekend.
I guess I had better get back to sanding.
Take care

would be nice if they had something that could soften up the first half mil of gel so it would sand easier....these inverted curves on my hull are a royal pain...
