Bruce, I agree, I belong to several Ford Forums and often times, they information posted there with pictures is far more valuable that you can get in service manuals and talking to mechanics.

Yes, I love the step by step photos. On changing the timing belt, one guy created a video and edited it so that is spedup while he was unbolting things and slowed down when he talked. Was excellent.

Re: Transfer Case Leak Suddenly Much Worse After Service

I believe LippCJ hit the issue with the leaks...

Lack of use will cause the seals to dry-out/crack. Now the rear seal I'd say I'm more surprised as it's what drives the vehicle all the time, but the front seal is probably not used enough? How often do you use 4 wheel drive? In most manuals it recommends putting the vehicle into 4 wheel drive once a month, to get fluid moving around all the parts (to include the front axle). I would agree with most that you should do all the seals at the same time to avoid the duplication in costs of re-pulling/teardown should you develope add'l leaks?!

In the end the one thing I have learned over the years is if it's mechanical, it'll fail. That's not to say it should not perform as per designed, but sometime things fail prematurely and its just the luck of the draw.

As far as a competent shop and possibly issues with your particular vehicle/transfercase, I'd check some Ford specific forums and see if there are similar issues popping up? It very well could be a bad design issue, bad parts or maybe just the poor installation from the factory? I would contend that most dealerships hire competent mechanics and have a vast amount of technical information available; however, that doesn't mean they are perfect and beyond mistakes...If possible, get a second opinion? The only real downside from my experiences in using dealerships is what they charge?!

My guts says the leak was always coming from the front seal and the way it traveled once it exited the case was down to the lowest point of the transfer case (where the two halves meet?). Changing the fluid exacerbated the issue (maybe the new fluid get hotter and creates more internal pressure? or maybe it being newer means it flows more freely?).

In the end, the real question in regards to spending your hard earned money is determining value!?

The value of something is not how much you have into it, but rather what you get out of it! So, spending an add'l $650 to have a relatively low mileage vehicle worth it after all is said and done?

Good Luck, I hope this is the end of the leaks?!

That's why I buy Toyota (I couldn't help taking a stab!)

thats a lot of money for 3 seals but its not a nice job to do unless you have a lift as its a pain to work under the truck. oil will always leak worse when replaced but it does show that the shop is not paying attention when they service a item that is leaking. i wouldnt be to upset but i would be un-impressed to have them service the fluids then for me to find out i had a leak (you already knew there was a leak so that should have been a clue when they didnt spot it).

Re: Transfer Case Leak Suddenly Much Worse After Service

Well, Ol' Blue is back in my possession. I visited with the service director yesterday morning and told him everything that had been said and done beginning with initial service first of the year. He agreed that something didn't sound right and promised to look into it. Yesterday afternoon the service advisor called to tell me the truck was ready. I hadn't heard anything from the SD so I called him to see what was going on. I was transferred to the service manager (not sure what the difference is) who told me the SD had come down with the flu and his wife had called to tell him his MIL had cancer. So, of course he was gone for the day. The SM promised to call me back when he knew something. He did so an hour later and advised me the SD had told the SA to reduce the bill by 25% but that wouldn't be the end of it, whatever that means. Now for the really funny part; when I was a mile away from the shop the check engine light suddenly illuminated. I called to tell them I was on my way back and headed that way. Turned out they had nicked a wire connected to the MAF sensor. They were able to resolve it in about 45 minutes and I was back on my way. At this point if they want to do something further for me that's great, but I'm not holding my breath. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than disappointed. The good news is there are other places I can take it in the future.

LOL there it is. Surprised it took this long. They all break; that's for sure. This one has been much more reliable than my last Sierra though.

My thought is the new oil is thinner.

+1....The new stuff is the correct viscosity. The old stuff may have increased in viscosity through evaporation, etc.

Bad break, but not completely unexpected. Tranny leaks often become worse after a fluid replacement.

This wasn't a tranny leak. What was leaking was the transfer case which still had the same fluid in it.

My Lexus has 160K on it without one problem....ever!

We traded the admiral's ES300 last summer. I believe it had 145k at that point. We had to do a few things to it, but it was a great car. My buddy really wanted to buy it but I just wasn't comfy selling it to him. She's driving a GS 350 now.

Well look who the cat dragged in. Congrats on the newborn but sorry to hear you're headed for another deployment. Will the family still be around here while you're gone?
