Took the bow rider out for the fourth weekend, had a great time and the old bayliner ran like a top. Went out with an old friend last weekend to the upper chesapeake on his 34 Mainship.
I'm re-motivated, my original thought was to finish this boat completely before hitting the water..................new thought get it floating and running and finish it while using it.

A pic of the girl friend with what should be an illegal smile, I have to admit I had the same smile all weekend

Ripped out the rear deck frame and found some ugly stuff

The rudder board was cracked and the only thing holding it in was the rudder

The board supports were rotted

And yes, stainless will corrode

It's been hotter than I can remember around here 123 with the humiture today so progress has been slow, but, I'm really pumped to get this thing on the water

Pulled the starboard tank and was pleasantly surprised, it was dated 1998. Rebuilt the mounts and will give it all new hoses

Pulled the swim platform off the transom, sanded and oiled. Looks pretty good for being 42 tears old. It's got a little character to it and this is after only one application of oil.

Got some holes to fill, some gellcoat repairs and will reseal all penetrations and reinstall the platform

You're making good progress there Wayne. By the way my rudder boards were in exactly the same condition.............cracked and rotted.

Maybe I missed it, but what are your plans for the engine?

Thinkin Rapido for a long block 318 and add closed cooling.

The 318 is a good choice. A guy in my marina has a Luhrs similar to mine with a 318 and he says it's very economical to run.

Good progress, and the best way to motivate, is to actually go on other boats. At least thats what I found.

Also that platform looks great!! Maybe a good clean and wax on the transom before you put it back on?

Wow, looking good. I need to ask you about your trailer, I have procured a 1969 Luhrs Sportfisher but I have to move it about 225 miles before I can start on it,& was told I had to have a trailer with a "cut out" to clear the prop & shaft.Think someone's blowing smoke cause it's the same boat & you don't have that on your trailer.Could you post aic of the back next time from a lower angle?It will help me a bunch.thanks & keep it rolling,looking good & making me jones real bad.

Thought the same thing, have already started shining the hardware and filling the holes, should have the gelcoat fixed and finished by the weekend. Couple of hangers ready for the polishing wheel

Think someone's blowing smoke cause it's the same boat & you don't have that on your trailer

The last crossmember is about five feet forward of the tramsom and the trailer has at least 8 inches of blocking on top of the frame with cutouts for lifting straps, I don't think these boats were ever meant to be trailer boats, so no he's not blowing smoke up your butt. The only reason I paid $1,200 for this boat was for the trailer. And yes the axles are upside down, I pointed that out when I was buying and negotiating. I also saw that nothing was welded in place, but didn't tell the seller that so everything will be an easy fix. The first time that I hit the brakes the front axle spun and ripped the brake lines off, and about five miles down the road the left rear wheel decided it was time to go.


The county constable pulled up and was relating how the two best days of a boat owner life are the day you bought and the day you sell, all I saw was an overweight, no registration, no lights and overwidth ticket. Was never happier when he said, looks like you got it under controll and have a good day

Okay, I know everybody has been patiently waiting for an update.

Cooled down here a little bit so I started on the aft deck frame.

But first a pic of the tank reinstall, still have to strap it down and replumb it.

Notched the four main frame pieces, was a little harder than I thought. It only took about 15 test fits before it worked out. I glassed the two cross pieces on the sides and bottom before install, The longitudinal pieces are glassed on the bottom only, as there are some more braces to add to them, then, everything will be glassed together when complete.

One more of the tank, I did paint before installing. The bilge will be all grey. The tank is isolated with cut pieces of bailing belt.

Can't wait to get back to wiring......

Looks real good. By the way if you want to change the mechanical fuel level floats to sending units it's pretty easy. I did it on my boat. Mine had 1.5" NPT (pipe thread) female thread in the top of the tank. Yours looks like it might be the same.

Gonna revisit your thread, Burt, and copy your adapters. They definately didn't waste any money on instrumentation on these things.

After I made those sending unit adapters I later found a company that makes sending units with a 1.5" male pipe thread ready to go. I'm not 100% sure but it might be Moeller. Either way it's not difficult to get them in there, and I think it's a big plus to be able to see your fuel level from the helm.

Yea I'm thinking you can't have enough info. be it temp or press.

Leaving the helm as is and filling the FB with gauges...and radar!

Did I mention I'm a diesel guy too. Just too cheap to take it to the next level.

Would it be possible for you to send me a pdf or TXT of your luhrs brochure. I am contemplating adding a cabin and doing some refit work to the decks, and your brochure would come in handy..

I will see if I can find the original PDF's and E-mail them to you, good luck on the project, 1 Year is pretty ambitious. I'll have been on mine for a year come January and it already had a flybridge on it.....BTW my cabin roof is cored in balsa, looks like 3/8.

I have made a little progress and will try to get some pics soon, the whole work thing and being a single dad has gotten in the way lately. The interest realy keeps me going as this has been a pretty drawn out project and it's tough to stay motivated sometimes.

At least my employer is cashing in on some of those Obama bucks he's been printing up lately (hope that's not too political) :facepalm:

I made some hangers to hang the fore aft deck beams on the transom.

Finished the deck supports may need to add some supports from the stringers

The rudder boards all glassed up and ready to install

Rebedded rudder thru hull, installed support boards and the rudder board is just sitting there for now, it will be glassed in.

Need to get the eng, reverse gear and V drive out so I can finish the bilge before putting the deck down. Not much progress but it is still moving forward.
