Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

And to think, at the beginning of this thread, you were timid as a mouse about doing all this work! :D

that's one helluva clamp you build though, bud! But, overkill here doesn't hurt a darn thing, so have at it!

I'm going to ( weather permitting ) get the last two panels of my deck cut to shape this weekend ( sun/mon ) and get them all sealed up nice and good. I'll have my deck in this summer for sure!

And just in case something really goes bad, I picked up a nice little sawzall from sears for 30 bucks new! I thought it was a heckuva deal, so I picked it up for a fathers day present ( to me! ). I figure it outta tear the boat to pieces real quick if I really just get fed up with it all! :D:p

Bill: thanks for the encouragement

Red: thanks. Man, everything I've learned about this stuff has come from guys like you right here on Iboats. What a great community. And yes, the sawzall is a great tool to have. Ranks right up there with vice grips as one of the best tool inventions ever.

Oh yes.

I see that your transom was so excited about going in that it grew legs...;)

Nice work on the clamps.

Tonights progress: Well, i had to really fight the urge to remove the clamps but i'm going to keep the transom clamped up another day or two. Instead, I cut one stringer to length and used the scrap to lengthen the other. I decided to biscuit join them together. This is a tool i should really use more often and get more comfortable with.......................

Not a lot of progress tonight, however, I did get to play around with my new Father's Day present. A Dremel MultiMax. Oh man, i'm really loving it. It does a nice job of cleaning up epoxy and peanut butter and then I took out the cutting blade and used it to straighten out a really jagged edge where i had cut part of my dash out. I couldn't believe how easy and straight the plunge cut blade worked. Don't know how long the blades will last in fiberglass, but turning it on edge it cuts easily through the skin. A lot more precise than a cut off wheel and easier to control than a sawzall. I'm a fan of this tool now.

I bet it didn't spit out nearly as much dust as a rotary tool would either. Funny, the email directly under my notification for this thread was from Amazon for the multimax....:D I'm considering picking one up myself, though the bigger issue is replacement blade availability for the different types out there...they use different keyways. One brand does have an adapter to use different blades from a different company though...forget which one it was.

Red: Yeah, the dust output is considerably less. I was surprised how easily and accurately it cut and that cut was made overhead.

Tonights Progress............Not much. Not feeling all that great. Post scribing on a scrap piece to get the shape of the hull where it rises at the cabin bulkhead.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Been frustrating couple days. Progress slow. First, I had a few small gaps at the top of the transom. Figured I'd just pour some epoxy along the top and let it trickle in to fill the voids. Well, it took more than I thought it would. About 25 oz. in all till it wasflooded and level at the top. So, that means I couldn't get all the warp out of the board (3/16") and the transom skin. It's dead straight accross the transom hole on the outside now. Before one side was in about an 1/8". So, that is good. Parallelism appears to be real good at the most important part, the outdrive hole.

While i was doing that I continued to cut forward into the sole plate that supports the gas tank. I've had the engine sole plate completely out. It's frustrating, because only the bottom half inch of foam is wet. It bothers me though, cause there is moisture there. So, I guess I'll be replacing the keel stringer and sole plates for both the engine and gas tank. Which means, ARRRRG, more freaking grinding.

83mulligan,
Keep the faith, The grinding is never really over until the glassing is. :p
However it will end.
Keep the pic's coming.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Thanks Bob. I know what you are saying. I was more concerned about the resin i needed to use to fill the voids along the top. However, i reviewed my picture of the gluing of the transom skin and i see that the areas that needed most were the ones that had the biggest gap and were vertically troweled. So, that makes a little more sense to me. I'd have preferred to have it the same across the board, but its in its done and it seems really solid, so there is nothing more i can do. I don't know how i could have anyway, that clamp had so much pressure. Just tough to bend 1 1/2 of ply with 4 total layers of 1708. I'm really glad the transom skin came out nice and even and straight.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Got some stuff done on the boat yesterday.

Made some structural PB (cabosil, microballoons, 1/4 chopped strands) and filleted in the transom. I used a big syringe to inject it slowly along the side openings so it wouldn't bubble and to make sure it got all the way back to the transom. Then i used a rounded spatula thingy that i found at the dollar store to make a nice fillet that even I might be able to glass over. I noticed right away that having the 1/4" strand in there makes it much easier to shape fillets.

here is a pic of that:

I cut back my keel stringer and ground out part of the engine area to prepare for tabbing the transom. Man, its really frustrating. There is only water along the first half inch of the bottom of the stringer. The rest of the wood is good. However, the glass tabbing it to the hull is shot. Its delaminated and barely hanging on. I pried it off with a cat's paw pretty easily.

P6270004.jpg

Looking forward, I'll have to pull up the gas tank sole because of the same reason. It's only wet along the bottom, but just that destroyed the lamination between the hull and the stringer. I've cut forward in some areas to test. Looks like i'll have to take it most of the way to the bow.

83mulligan,
Glad to see you are back to getting some work done.
Looks great. I use the short strain glass all the time. It makes the material easy to use and smooth out. Sorry about the delam, but it's better to remove it now then go back in later.
Take care.

You've been committed to doing things right throughout this trip. Sometimes, the shortcuts can look pretty appealing. Sometimes, it's just better to take the scenic route...

You've covered quite a bit of ground all ready. Enjoy the journey.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

I've got some bad, bad, disappointing news. I'm not happy with the PL Premium bond on the new transom to the skin. I think there is more void area in there than i first thought. Also, some areas around the transom hole that I can seperate easily by jamming in a scraper :mad::mad:

I'm so disappointed. How will I ever get it out without ruining it........
