83,
What'd ya decide on supporting the boat? Are ya gonna leave it on the trailer or take it off ? I took mine off last week in the garage so that i can do some work to the trailer when I get around to it.

I'm going to leave it on, 58. I think the roller trailer provides plenty of support. I can always brace off the frame of the trailer if i think it needs more.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

ok guys, need some advice on materials. I've decided to go with epoxy resin. I'll need fiberglass for the following:

Transom: Over 1 1/2" of marine grade ply

Stringers: 2 ea. 3/4" by 13 ft. marine ply if i have enough after transom.

Bulkheads and Deck: 1/2" outdoor ply

So, i'm not looking for calculations on how much of what to buy. I'll figure that out. I'm looking for advice on type of glass and weight for each part.

Oh, and the deck will also have a layer of 1/4" teak on top of it.

any advice will be appreciated.

Great minds think alike! (well, so do mediocre ones!!)
I was going to suggest the exact thing if you were concerned about supporting it. I think you'll be fine.
I'll post after while on what I have used/be using as far as glass. Makin supper for the boys right now.

Well, after some pushing with the lawn tractor and pulling with the blazer and some shoving and finessing I got the boat into the garage and turned around so the transom is accessable through the back garage door. Most importantly, mrs. mulligan's car fits in her parking spot:)

Its not going to make much of a difference whether you use marine plywood or not, if you're going to use CDX in other areas you could just use it for the entire project.

I agree with Ondarvr, CDX will be fine for the transom. you may have read where I prefer pressure treated, but that is up to you.

So you are going to put 1/4" teak on the deck? How is it attached? I'm just wondering because a single layer of 1708 biax on the deck will give the mat side to the cdx, and leave the smooth biax side facing up so you have a nice smooth surface to work on. It will greatly reduce sanding that would be needed if just mat was used.

83,

I forgot to tell you awhile back, I also used a circular saw to cut out the fiberglass. It makes quick work of long easily accessible cuts. You can set the depth to cut just the glass, or glass and ply. You can use just about any blade. Just make sure you wear a respirator and EYE protection! (Also use a cheapy saw, becuase it won't like the dust and will more than likely die an earlier than normal death).

58: I'm thinking it will be fine on the trailer. seems plenty solid enough. Hey, go ahead and fill me in on your glass material list. I'll keep the circ saw in mind, thanks!

Freddyray21: Heck yeah, I don't want to be working outside!

Ondarvr: My only real reason for using marine grade on the transom is that i'll be hanging a yamaha T8 back there as well and i liked the idea of extra plys in the wood for it. I'd like to hear your recommendations for the types of glass i'll need for each section as well :)

Mark42: Yes, Teak. I'd like to get by with epoxy for fastening it to the deck. Avoid screw holes in new deck if possible. Biax, eh? Do i need it with epoxy resin? I don't really mind a rough surface for gluing to, so far as it is level. Liked the hard top by the way!

Fiberglass boats don't really rely on the strength of the plywood in the design, plywood is used for the transom core because it has more compression strength than other low cost products. The fiberglass skins take most of the load. Marine grade plywood is designed for boats that use plywood as the main structural material.

A couple layers of 1708 will hold up.

O.k. thanks Ondarvr. I can buy that. So, for the transom and stringers two layers of 1708 biax? I'm using epoxy resin. Want to make sure it is enough.
