their problem was that they had the angle wrong, they did not let out enough rope. it pulled then straight down, instead of on an angle

Re: USCG Searching For Missing Football Players

I see this as a tragic mistake by unprepared boaters.

I'm a working guy not wealthy by any stretch. I boat in the gulf and frequently go diving 40 miles out in my wellcraft 238 cc with twin 150's.

I have an epirb. If I have a problem theres a helicopter hoovering over me in an hour or two at the most. These guys were football stars with deep pockets. I hope the grand they saved on the epirb was worth their lives. It's foolish to go so far un-prepared for the worst. You have to plan for the worst and hope for the best.

My two bits.

Re: USCG Searching For Missing Football Players

My anchor has been stuck on several occasions in local lakes, Once I had to dive down to retrieve it (Grapple style) No biggie it was about 15 feet deep and I was wearing snorkle geat with a wife ready up top with a PFD if I needed it. My main anchor is now a "Retreiveable" style, it has always pulled up with little effort even after being "Stuck". Once we were out tubing, daughter was ready to get in so we stopped and brought in her and all the gear. When I tried to start the motor it cranked a few revs then stopped. I troubleshot it for a few minutes, no problems I could see so I cranked it again. I noticed the stern was down LOW and I KNEW what it was, I grabbed my always close razor sharp knike and jumped in the water and cut the rope off that was tied to someones old anchor that had gotten stuck, now wrapped around my prop. Someones stuck anchor ALMOST sunk us that day. I was a Boy Scout...I like to Be Prepared...
