Re: Was Jesus a real person?

Peace, guys. As I said, I have no problem with your motives. I also have no problem respecting your beliefs.

What I have a problem with is that too many have no respect for mine, or if they have respect their behavior doesn't show it.

Understand that in my 70 years I have experienced input from many religious points of view and have spent many hours interviewing missionaries from Bahai, LDS, Jehovah's Witnesses et. al. I also spent many hours studying the St. James version of The Bible. LaSalle awarded me a 4.0 for my analysis of the Gospels and of Solomon's whining, in spite of the fact that it bore little resemblance to popular understanding of them.

The conclusions I have reached are my own, not adoption of what others believe. I choose not to evangelize them.

If we could sit down with a pot o' joe or a 5th of single malt for several hours I might be able to explain the basics of what I believe, but considering the hornet nest that erupted when I said that I doubt that Jesus was divine you might want to bring your Prozac. :)

Naw, JB, I wouldn't need the Prozac. And I would be honored to sit down with you some day and share a pot 'o joe, or whatever (maybe a nice sticky cinnamin roll to go with it? :) ).

I also understand that many times well meaning individuals will hurt others by the things they say and do, and the results of those hurts can leave scares that last forever. And although from the little bits you have shared of your beliefs, I MAY not agree with them, I still respect you and your beliefs. You can take that to the bank. And from this side, sometimes it does not seem that you respect my beliefs, but deep down I know you do. It is just the way we read between the lines that sometimes colors our vision.

BTW, I believe the conclusions I have reached are my own also, and not an adoption of what others believe, but I will not go into that story how that came about at this time. Just say I could not always say that.

How 'bout we sit down with a 5th of single malt and talk about something else? Who wants to argue... that's what DC is for.

Re: Was Jesus a real person?

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
What makes that "quote" special? Lots of people have said something similar through the ages. Maybe he was just crazy!

BTW, the only person I agree with on this entire thread is JB. Not that anyone cares, since apparently I'm going to H-E-double hockey sticks. ;)

Whatever Jesus said to him was not in English, and the recollection was written 45 years after the fact.

Might he have said something that could have been recalled and later translated several times as, "My way is the only way, and noone comes to peace except by my way."?

Just a thought.

I'm not religious, but does that make me an atheist? No. It makes me Agnostic. The reality is, I simply don't subscribe to what most would consider conventional religion.

Seems to me whoever moved the rocks at stone henge and built the pyramids were pretty driven by religion as well. Religion comes in different shapes flavors and forms. People shouldn't be expected to believe in Jesus just because they grew up in North America. I've always been taught to think for myself, and as PW suggested, why are people so eager to conform?

Getting back to the original question-yes, I'm sure Jesus was a real person, and I'm sure he walked on water, but it was probably winter when he did it. :)

No one has so far doubted whether the man refered to as Jesus ever existed or not, the question of Jesus's divinity was not what was asked at the start of this thread. Yes,Jesus was a man and he onced lived.
I am certain that in the laws and bylaws of the USA justice system, that the athesis Luigi's claims would not have had any legal standing, from this perspective the judge is wrong.

What was the difficulty in giving a straight forward answer to a straight forward question?

You can believe what you want, that is what makes us so differant. I can say one thing for sure, there are a lot of so called Christians who think they are but in truth are not.
God Bless You all

I would ask why? Did the priest beliefs effect this mans life somehow? If I say I believe the fishing is better in the river here than in the lake does that mean I have to go to court to prove it? I think someone has a master plan here. They know it will be impossible to prove 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt that He existed as we believe, not to mention still exists as we believe.

Three pages of this stuff??!!
I have stayed quiet on this one because it is what it is.
I often ask myself,
why do people take such "cases" before a court of "law"?
We can determine by the number opf replies to this thread, it is because there are some major buks to be made by all.
The bottom line is, one group is already convinced Jesus is a myth, while another group are convinced he is the son of God, and sits at his Father's side in heaven.
So what good is this priest's crusade, if not to make money? and what of the prosecution ?

Yep--- Lot's of money per hour to be made on both sides!
But one other thing is clear. This case will change NOBODY's mind, one way or the other!

Re: Was Jesus a real person?

In my belief it is all about blind faith. If it were right there in front of us plain as day for everyone to see without question (it is in the world we live in but...) then it would be easy. Blind faith. To believe in something that we can not reach out and touch.

On the other hand, maybe Jesus did live long ago. And just maybe he was just a nut case insane man with followers like any cult group has. Maybe he made it all up for his own popularity like so many cults toay?

I respect everyones right to believe what they wish. As my belief is to spread the word of God and help others, but I also believe inside of myself that everyone can believe what they want to. If I am wrong in believing then what am I out? If I am right then it will all be worth it in the end. Either way I can use my beliefs to guide me through my life and make a happier life for myself and those around me.

The questions about the universe and how it plays with our Christianity. No where does the Bible say there are no other worlds or other beings. I would be surprized if God only made one world.

Our Christian beliefs are not to leave others out but to try to open other earthly beings to the wonderful gift given us by Jesus Christ, a second, athird and on and on changes to accept him.
