Re: Tater's floor job

It's amazing what horrors can be found under what looks like a fairly nice carpeted floor. But it lasted 35 years so you have to say it was built pretty well in the first place. What are you going to replace it with? Exterior plywood?

thats the game plan. i know the marine grade stuff is the way to go, ive read that when properly glasses that stuff can last for like 40 years lol. im just going to get regular ext. ply and glass it well, slap down some carpet. all after working out a bigger issue, stick with the igloo or upgrade to a coleman? lol

that cooler was exactly what it is. a cooler in the floor where a ski-locker should be. just another example of fine craftsmanship from the previous owner...truth be told its not a bad idea, but it was just odd finding a igloo cooler under your floor.

Re: Tater's floor job

Got back into it this morning just to formulate this evenings game plan.

first things first. the garage needs organized and policed up, a job managable with the kid tagging along. after the wife gets home its back to business.

Im cutting what needs to stay and whats getting tossed, from about flush at the transom to the start of the bow, and about flush with the gunwhale stringers. after this is accomplished i can regruit help with simple instructions of ripping out everything in the middle without harming a stringer.

todays inspection provided great results. stringers are solid! after pulling carpet, breaking out the glass and removing in some places wood so rotten it was like goop. Exposed foam witch is still underminded if needed to be replaced or not. foam is in great shape, things are looking up as of now. we shall see when more gets removed and the plan finalized.

I will be laying the new floor starting next week if weather permits. Tuesday is the goal.

more pics to come after an intensive garage police call....

Re: Tater's floor job

Today was a productive day considering the short time to work. I had a chance to square the garage away to store seats and paneling. I made some room for a table to start doing some wood templeting and such activities.

I made quick work of the floor, still upset that im still in demolition mode, but im also conducting thorough inspections as i work.

Things are looking great so far.

Re: Tater's floor job

Re: Tater's floor job

as you can see in the last post and this im cutting about an inch away from the gunwhale support. I kept my distance from the transom. I have two reasons for doing this. on initial inspection the transom and the gunwhales appeared solid with no rot. as I work my way down the gunwhale i poke a screwdriver under the fiberglass into the gunwhale feeling for soft spots. my other reason for leaving an inch of glass is to give myself a level plane to lay my new glass. The new wood floor will slide under the glass tabs, according to plan.

take a peak...

Re: Tater's floor job

Re: Tater's floor job

things started looking more solid as i worked my way to the bow cap. unfortuntly things get more difficult to disassemble when they are in good shape. This was a good stopping point for me, as you can see in the 4th pic i cant slide the new floor under the tabs when the wood is still bonded with the fiberglass (compare to post#12, 4th pic). As of now the the idea is to lay the new floor flush with the tabs with good wood under it. if that makes any sense.

im now figureing out what to do with the front bow cap and if the wood under there is solid. so far so good. i probably wont get to work on it untill monday night. definitly behind on my schedule.

Re: Tater's floor job

Re: Tater's floor job

the last of the demo pics for now.

another great thing happened today...i got my engine running again, last trip out i tried to run it out of gas, i had thought i did, but the following week i couldnt sleep not knowing i put my engine to sleep for the winter without knowing for sure. after getting to the fuel tank i found i still had gas...unpon inspection i had broken a contact on the points, so i ordered new breaker from marine2go and installed that pricy sob, went to the local autozone and picked up a generic condenser which was indenticle, replaced the coil while i was at it for 20 bones. she started right up, motivated me to get down and work on that floor. things are looking good we'll see how monday goes.

Re: Tater's floor job

Glad she is running again. Demo looks good and is a great start.

Have you sourced the wood and how much along with the fiberglass?

I know sometiems the Depot their, exterior ply is sometimes a tad wet.

The fiberglass sticks the best when that stuff is dry and you can put a layer of resin on.

I might stop by tonight with the shop vac and the extra prop by have a lot going on.

Re: Tater's floor job

sounds good.

im going to find ext plywood and keep it in the garage and attempt to dry it out as much as possible, after it is cut and hours before installation i will have them in front of space heaters to draw out any moisture, long story short im not buying wood and slapping it in same day.

i need to finish the starboard side tonight if im lucky, the wood up front near the helm is in great shape and makes the demolition process slow, wizz wheel isnt getting the job done anymore, might need a jig saw.

Re: Tater's floor job

Re: Tater's floor job

not a lot of progress tonight, had limited time...seems to be a trend. anyhow...

removed trim motor, completely removed fuel tank housing boards, removed both starboard and portside floors, cut glass tabs to size, completely cleaned and shopvacced.

The canadian stopped by to take a look, we formulated a floor plan, thought up a sending unit access door and threw down a few beers.

I have to work on a nissian tomorrow so no work on the boat till wednesday, so behind schedule its not funny (as i laugh). im gonna push demo back to this weekend because thats the only full day i might get to work. soooo early next week new floor panels will be cut to fit and drying in the garage while i order glass and resin online.

heres where im at, foam still great, as are the stringers, may need some spray foam to level out some low spots.

you can see in the last post pictures that the foam is imprinted with the wood grain. no wood is there, just stains, kinda cool.

one more for fun...my boat:
