Re: Webbcraft deck replacement

UPDATE:

I have made all my templates oout of the posterboard, i have cut the midsection and the portside floor out of the plywood. I test fit both peices, so far so good. Cincinnati weather changed for the worst last few days, went from 90's to 60's over the weekend with rain so ive been relaxing and rooting for the reds to clinch and the bengals offense not to suck!

pics to come when the rain stops.

...Oh yeah, my steering wheel should be in today:)

What is the best glass cloth to purchase? for deck purposes...

strength and thickness is of concern along with formability.

What Oz cloth has everyone else used?

going with us composites BTW.

I like your wheel.
Use 1708 biax on the top side and 1 1/2 oz mat on the bottom side of your deck. The biax is a combo of cloth and mat and is EZ to work with. You'll love it.

I'm just sayin...:D

Dude.....Love the boat. Brings back memories. My grandfather had the same boat, year and motor, only interior was green. That was the boat I learned to ski behind. Good times.

Thanks, I really like it, its unique. I just cant wait to get this deck done so i can start on the dash and engine wiring.

Thanks for the info. how thick is the 1708? I can sacrifice formability and easily work with thicker cloth.

and on the wheel, thanks! i like it and is the center piece of "style" im shooting for when i re-do the dash. the wife bought it for me. I left a review on it, The craftsmanship on the welds is kinda poor and a piece of slag was in the wheel so you hear a rattle, not that you would ever hear it on the boat though. and the center cap is much different than in the picture and actually not as nice. the displayed center cap shows what looks like a carbon fiber sticker with uflex on it, it comes with a a clear center and some strange design, oh well it was the only steering wheel that i really liked and it feels pretty nice too.

I'll try and order the glass and stuff, however im gonna need a very detailed list on what to buy, i have no idea wht i need to "add to cart" lol

1708 is 17 oz. biaxial (weave is on the diagonal) with 8 oz. mat stitched to it. Formability is very good. Makes a very strong deck. Lot's of guys use it for their stringers and their transoms. Two layers of it and you got your self a TANK

You really only need about 8-10 oz of cloth on the deck and it will out last the time you own it. So we need to figure out how much I have left and then figure out the tabbing situation and how much we need to order to cover the deck and how many gallons to make it all happen.

Ughhhhhhhh... Feels like it has been forever since I have had the chance to work on the boat. Between work, family and weather, its been difficult to find the time.

The wife was off to college for the night, did some finger painting with the kid, stuffed her with some food and off to bed for her.

I scrambled outside and untarped the Webbcraft. Again, couldnt spend much time, atleast poked around and made slight forward progress, but no first down.

Heres the mess....

The portside deck is cut and fit under the tabs, here is a pic of how my "under tab" deck fitting is working out, its a lot of trouble and your deck has to be cut exact, measure 37 times and cut once.

Going to cut templates for the starboard side tomorrow, so i had to prepare my tabs and trim my foam so the deck can sit flush on the stringers. I use an old fillet knife to slice the foam down flush. Thought I would share...

flushing it up with the fillet knife...

finished and flushed...

Very nice progress, and you are doing it right with taking your time on the fitment since if you do it right now it will save you time and money later.

Steering wheel looks nice, you order one of those gauge kits yet? They will look kick *** with that wheel.

Something you may think about is doing a colored dash liek a wood with grain or a blue to match the rest to break up the monotony of the white.

Re: Webbcraft deck replacement

its in my american nature to investigate causes of failure and point out flaws of others lol, I spent the evening drinking beer (wife and kid were at disney princess on ice), burning rotten wood deck peices and cleaning up my mess around the boat and garage....i investigated a few peices of wood from the deck. its obviouse why this deck failed, however everyone needs something to look at instead of working right? enjoy...

someone had taken core samples of the deck at one point. however these sections had not been re-glassed, just recarpeted. This tells me that someone ripped out the carpet, inspected the deck, said its ok, than just carpeted back over...why does anybody have time to do it right the first time?

here is a random peice of wood and glass, there are two tack type nails thru the glass and wood. if you do this maybe some marine goop or butter, this was an invite of water into the deck.... can you spot the nail and where a nail had been?
IMGA0005-Copy.jpg

i flip the glass over to see what had happened to the wood... a small tack nail had done this much damage....the wood is blackened and was certainly a source of premature rot..

That master cylinder will buff out, for sure. How hard was it to get off the trailer?

And there isn't any marking on that master? You might be better of with a little thread in teh trailer section to get this stuff resolved. You might want to invest in penetrating oil as well.

Also, drink some real beer not cute little light beer in a aluminium bottle-can thing.

Re: Webbcraft deck replacement

yeah, ill definitly make a surge brake thread in its appropriat section.

the master cylinder piston is seized. if it comes loose i might look into fixing the rest of the system, if not. screw it....

dont hate the coors light cans.....it was perfect, when a six pack is not enough and a 12 pack is too much, the 9 pack comes into play....

Re: Webbcraft deck replacement

It's the same fluid oz though.

12*12=144

9*16=144

Same amount as your "too much" 12 pack.

Order that fiberglass
