what?
-a '75 AristoCraft nineteen w/ 165hp L6 mercuriser

why?
-i was familar with the 165hp L6 + have another boat (doa) w/ a 165hp L6 for parts. + the 165hp L6 is a very good engine to have in a boat. very durable and easy to work on..
-aristocrafts are all (mostly) glass boats. no wood to rot. this was a major + i thought...
-the hardtop was appealing. later to find out it's the best thing since sliced bread... like boating in the rain, or going full enclosed for temp control. + sleep on board.
-i liked the closed bow for a more secure feeling in larger weather.
-it's way past deprecation.
-versatile boat. can ski, cruise, sleep, go fast.
-AristoCraft is still around too. the oem's grandson still has the doors open and some boat parts are still available + oem support for questions about the boat.
+ it's cool looking...

Sasto....Why the heck would ya wanna own one when you can just drive someone elses and let them pay for it all....sounds like a cool gig to me! Just sayin! You seriously get paid to have that much fun? All joking aside, there's a sick part of me that would love to get a captains license so I could drive boats like those! My wifes uncle (he and wife are both Dr.'s) is looking at a 63' Hatteras in the St. Petersburg area....maybe I could drive that one someday if he buys it!

sasto...would it be wrong of me to say I hate you? ;)

Seriously, you qualify for this thread for sure...you have had experience with boats that many of us would never have. Tell us some of the good and bad points of those you mentioned, and let us learn from your experiences (with the boats...NOT the "mate" ;) )

Hi Coronado, simply put.... I would like to go where I want....when I want.....someday. I think we all work our lives to attain those goals.

I hope you get to pilot the Hatteras someday. I find larger boats easier to handle than small ones. You'll be just fine.

Good Luck! Keep the dirty side down.

Join the crowd of people that hate me for what I do....not what I am.

Where to start without being boring.......Smallest boat I ever ran was a 10' tinny. Loved that boat. She caught many snook at night trolling with a 3 hp 1967 Rude.

Sea Pro? Took that 18 footer to the Bahamas once. 6 miles out in a storm with 8 foot seas once. 3000 hrs on the 90hp Merc. I'm still here to tell about it. Her name was SASTO.

The 32 Wellcraft with 454's. A good fishing machine that drinks a ton of fuel. She takes a pounding and keeps on going. She is wet.

The Viking Sportfish. Well another animal. A good battlewagon that handled all seas very well except a head sea. What a pounding. Hard chine (s) made for a hard entry. She caught lots of fish, and that's the main thing. 3 staterooms, 3 heads, 5 TV's, 2400 horses, what more would you ask for?

The Cabo, a fine fishing machine. She does everything you ask of her except one. She will lay down like a puppy when using trim tabs or cornering. Hold on. She didn't like a following sea at all. Easy to loose rudder.

The 501 Chris Craft? I like the interior woodwork. Walk in engine room. She dosen't catch fish. She is new to me so still figureing things out. 15 kt top speed. Not much. Layed back cruising.

The Penn Yan? What a fun machine. Single 318, 25kts top, and she catches fish. Hard to get used to the tunnel hull but once I did I really like it.

I enjoyed reading your post, infideltarget, I hope others participate as well.:D

Re: What and Why?

I bought my Coleman Crawdad new in '84 to use on the small private lake (163 acres) to which I had usage rights. No gas motors allowed. It was cheaper than a comparable tinny and I liked the way the interior was arranged. Moved away. Got divorced, moved back to a house around the corner from the first, this one with lakefront property on that same lake. Still have the Crawdad.

I bought the Bayliner in my signature in the summer of 2009. I always liked the lines on that era Bayliner, and I wanted a bowrider with an outboard for ease of maintenance and replacement.

Yes that is the bottom. The pic was taken on Owasco lake in upstate NY. It is one of the Finger lakes, they are some of the cleanest lakes in the world. It's a beautiful place to boat.

Re: What and Why?

first boat 1983 16'ft sylvan sea monster suzuki75hp.Why started fishing in Canada 2 years earlier.Hated rental boats, not strong enough to get up on plane w/gear I was hauling.16' was identical to fishing buddy's boat, but his was much nicer.Bottom line what 16' or bigger with a least 70hp. also had to be aluminum, lots of rocks in boundry waters.Found it on craigslist,3200.00 2009 seened like a good price at the time. found deck was soft, and didn't like center console, spend winter rebuilding, added fuel tanks, live well.nice stereo.re-wired boat completely. added side storage, floor storage afull console w/dash dual voltage gauges to monitor both batterys.speedo tach, front and dash mounted fishfinders.took it fishing in canada 3 times worked as I hoped it would. But wife didn't think it was big enough for our family to do the weekend thing, hang out on the water with family and friends. she saw some of the other types of boats, and desided that I/we needed a bigger boat.I bought first boat with one perpess(sp) hey we need spell check on this. to go fishing, not spend time on the water with my family,I didn't think anybody else wanted to fish. Gee delema, wife wants bigger boat. Well the Lunds are King up in Canada. So I went looking for one, found a decent one, but was alittle low on price,it had been for sale for about a month or more aug sept.so i thought I could get it a little cheap.I didn't get it, but now I knew what I wanted found another about 3 weeks later, same size but much better condition and it had a johnson 150 instead of a merc 115.so now my current boat is a 1775 Lund pro"v" fisherman, with matching trailer with great tires. and all in all great shape. couple of small issues, horn and speaker blow but wife is happy, fishing buddies envyous. Cant wait 10 more weeks til fishing in Canada. No pics, in storage for another few weeks, if weather keeps up I get it out sooner.

Re: What and Why?

That pic is on the Broad River?

If you are asking me, which I assume you are, then the question is yes. The photo taker was gathering some oysters for dinner and took a snapshot since I had none of the boat in the water.

Re: What and Why?

Just bought a 1985 Sea Ray 210 cuddy. $2100. Floors are all in good shape except for the small piece covering the battery box. You could eat off the engine, it's so clean. Just fired it up and ran it on muffs for a half hour on last year's gas... Now I just hope it floats!

I bought it because I have been browsing craigslist for the last year or so and I finally jumped on what I hope was a good deal. I wanted a boat with a 5.7 or bigger that could go on Lake Michigan and that I could stay overnight on if I really wanted to.
