I want to be Sasto when I grow up! I always enjoy a little glimps into your adventures. Thanks!

Well....maybe I want to be you when I grow up. ;)

Ziggy?......I believe....I may have seen...every photo....of your boat...posted on this forum, and I can't get enough.

One day.....I just may own a vessel like the ones here!

I have learned more here at iboats, about boats, than anywhere else!

Keep this post alive about "what we like or why we like",.....or don't like, about our boat.

Re: What and Why?

I grew up around sailing and love boating. I still go with my parents down to their gozzard 44 sailboat in galveston tx. So I had no choice I needed the boat lol. My first boat was an 89 or 87 cant remember VIP 16 foot runabout. It was bought for 100 bucks for a project. I had to strip the boat and re-glass the inside of the hull replace floors and seats steering cables and electrical it was a big project although it wasnt that expensive. I bought it cause it was cheep and had a great motor 1990 force 125 2 stroke. sold that boat when I moved a few years ago. My second was a 1995 seadoo spx jet ski with a bad motor. I thought it would be fun to ride the jetski. boy was I wrong it hurts my back lol. I got the jet ski from some guy on craigslist for 100 bucks with a bad motor absolutly no compression on #1 cylinder. I then found a guy who needed his jetski worked on via craigslist (some minor electrical work) Instead of paying me cash he gave me a shiney new rotax motor. took that puppy home had it in the ski the next day and was re pluming all the hose and wiring the electrical. got her running like a champ!! did about 50mph it was a blast but after about a month of riding it, it just was not practical for my fiancee and I. To unsteady and not good for picknicks lol I decided to trade my ski in for a maxum 1800 sr with a vortec 4.3 alpha one gen II. only paid 40 bucks in sales tax (even trade for my jetski which had no trailer haha) this boat the dealer though had a bad motor but after completly going through it (checked compression and pressure tested cooling system. there wasnt a thing wrong with it. did an oil change and serviced the outdrive put bellows on it and new gimble bearing and inspected the u joints. everything was good. had a great time last season on it. took it all over the place in nc from the bay to several lakes in the surrounding area. hmmm I think that raps things up (maybe ill get itchy again and try to trade up lol)

My thoughts exactly sir! Well put! I, however, would not want to be you. I mean...all the nice boats, beautiful scenery, adventure, (relative) freedom...who would want THAT stuff?!? ppffffff....must be a living hell for ya'! ;) Be safe out there, skipper!

Thanks, infideltarget. Safety is #1. I The job fits my lifestyle just perfect. I started off several years ago in the business laying in fiberglass and inhaling styrene. Guess that explains why I'm not all there!

Now...if I could just figure out how to make money piloting one of those fancy motor homes across North America for a year or two...

I've read your thread a couple times now! :)

Re: What and Why?

My first and current boat is a 1990 Regal Sebring 185.

Up until I bought this boat I kind of overlooked boats and boating in general, and really just had no interest in being out on the water. My father had always told me about the boat, my step-grandfather I guess you could call him had owned since new. My whole family used to go out on this boat, my uncles, my older brother, my mom ect, and they had lots of stories from being out on the water. Gene ( my step grandfather) had let the boat sit outside for close to 9 years with no cover over the boat. So as you can imagine, it was in ROUGH shape and needed LOTS of work. Last July my grandmother ( fathers mom ) called to wish my dad a happy birthday and mentioned something about selling the boat, my dad being uninterested called me up and asked me if I was interested. I went and took a look at it after calling a friend up who knew a thing or two about boats to come along and see if it's worth buying. When I got there I found the boat in the weeds, had plants growing off the floor, and swarmed with bees. After being stung more than 10 times, and killing every nest I could find I jumped in to take a look. I took the engine cover off which damn near fell apart in my hands to see if the motor was any good, and complete. There was no battery in the boat, and I wanted to know the motor wasn't seized, so I hooked jumpers up to my Jeep, and onto the boat connections and the boat turned over. I started to get excited right around that time since I starting thinking that I might actually be buying this thing. I called Gene up and told him I'd give him $500 for it, that's really all I felt it was worth. He told me that it was worth more than $500 so I told him I was no longer interested. I headed home, but before I got home he called me back and told me $500 was fine, and that he was unsure of the condition of the boat since he hadn't seen it in several years. I brought the boat home and began working on it. A year later it still needs lots of work, but I've already put a new floor in, radio, alternator, starter, carb rebuilt, bellows replaced, gimble bearings, stern and bow lights, trim gauge, seats, carpet, new engine cover, new battery ect... It's not really my ideal boat, and I don't know how much longer I'll have it but I'd imagine when I go to sell it my father will be the next owner.

It still needs a lot of work, but that's fine, I enjoy it for the most part.

Re: What and Why?

What?: 2011 Glastron GT 205 w/Merc 4.3 MPI for 220 HP.

Why?: My first boat, so I wanted something new with a warranty on the motor/hull. I wanted a good, solid boat by a reputable name. I looked around at other boats in this price range (Bayliner, Tahoe, Larson & Sea Ray), and while they all fit the bill of what I wanted, the Glastron was, in my opinion, a class above the others while in the same price range.

There are a few cons:
1) Only has a 2 speaker sound system
2) Did not have a few of the options (wakeboard tower, snap on cockpit and bow covers, stereo control on the swim platform) that some of the others were equipped with at that price.

But none of these were "important" enough to me, to change my mind. The pros (VEC Hull, overall quality of craftsmanship and detail, warranty and reputation) for me, outweighed the cons tremendously.

Re: What and Why?

I bought a Red/White 1989 Four Winns Freedom 190 4.3L Cobra. I bought it since the price was right ($450.) and was in search of a project. The block was cracked from the PO that did not winterize at all. I lnew the interior was in need of repair but didnt know before the trip that it was mostly non-existant. I wanted a project since my youngest is 20 months old it would give a year and a half or so to complete. Want him to be almost 3 or so before taking him out on the lake.

Lets keep 'em coming! Gotta be more good stories as to what you bought and why....

It doesnt have to be the current boat, and it could be your next boat. What WILL you buy, and why?

Re: What and Why?

Some of the best memories came fron a 10footer...I think she was a seaswirl...sea something. She had an3hp 1987 Johnson and we caught many snook off her trolling big lures. My high school buddy and I would load up the cooler with Bud and travel thru the canals and horbors around the big yachts at night.

My biggest....Terry caught many more than me....and bigger.

Re: What and Why?

For brevity, I'll just touch on the last few:

We had scored a great deal on a 1996 bayliner Trophy W/A cuddy with a Mercury 150 O/B. I thought it was going to be perfect for the family. It had pplenty of interion cockpit room, tons of power (51 MPH), and a cuddy for getting out of the Florida afternoon storms. Owning an upholstery shop, I went about making it mine. New interior berth cushions, bimini top with enclosure, and mooring cover. Wife and kids rarely went out with me :(

Time for a change to what I really wanted. Put the Trophy up for sale and drove down to Melbourne, Florida to get a closer look at a 2004 21' Angler center console FX204.

Boat 2.jpgBoat 4.jpg

Beautiful boat with 60 hours. this was early 2005. If the family didn't want to go out, then I was going fishing! This came with T-top, outriggers, and a Johnson 150. SOLD! Plenty of floor space, giant fish box, live wells, coolers. Now to make it mine. Took out the individual helm chairs for a leaning post. Windlass, spray curtains, GPS/chartplotter, 4 big cushions. Loved that boat. Guess what? Now the family wants to go out with me..

So, my wife and children start going out and then start complaining that there's no place to go to the bathroom (!?!?), they can't get out of the sun (in Florida...really?) and they want more room. So, I ask my wife..."Are you telling me it's OK to go get a bigger boat?" She replies "Get what you want as long as we'll be comfortable". God...I love her...

Into the ads I go, looking for almost a year to find the perfect family boat. We settled on the Carver because it had all the amenities we were looking for and in the right price range. I wanted a flybridge because I drove my brother's 28' express and I couldn't even see the bow. It had a small galley and head for the wife and kids. It also easily sleeps 6for weekend trips. What ever I got had to have the ability to remain self contained as I wanted to do 3-6 day trips twice a year.

I flip flopped back and forth between diesels and gas engines. Thankfully all of my friends that ran or worked with bigger boats helped solidify the arguement for gas. Diesels would have given me better mileage and longer overall life, but the maintenance is more expensive and the rebuild/replacement will run 3x that of a gas engine. I can easily work on my engines (7.4L Mercruisers), but I know crap about a diesel. Plus, I do weekend day trips and 2 long trips a years. That's not conducive to diesel engines. they need to be run.

Overall, I love the boat. Once again, I'm making it mine with the custom stuff. And to top it off, The family is finally happy as well!

I wanted the perfect all around boat. A boat perfect for family, fishing and general recreation. Now I admit, my idea of recreation is way different than the average "iboat" member but that's just how I roll or in this case float.

1975 Biesemeyer flatbottom that I restored to "better than original" condition 5 years ago. I kept the boat "1975" in many ways (on purpose) but also modernized some of it. This boat is great for water skiing but not the best for long distance sight seeing.

Length-18 feet
Weight- 2000lb
Speed at idle- 28mph
Propellor specs- 11 1/2 dia by (15 pitch) 2 blade
Propellor overdrive- 48%
Max engine rpm- 8,200
Fuel capacity- 24 gallons
Fuel type- Methanol

I take it you traded in that Center Console on the Carver? Thats more along the lines of the boat I wish I had right now, but beggars can't be choosers. Maybe next time...

Re: What and Why?

My first boat was a 1988 bayliner capri that he claimed was well maintained...We used it for a season and it spent more time in the shop then on the water...spent of 7k just to get it in the water for about 9 frustrating trips to the lake...We decided this year to trade it in...We bought a 2010 glastron 215 GT deckboat that was from a dealership that went out of business...We got tons of addons like a wake tower, table mounts in the front and back, huge extended swim platform in the back, and a bunch of accessories...The price was right, the boat had 0 hours, and had an upgraded engine...Now instead of the boat being in the shop we have used it 7 times already and the season isn't even here yet...

Re: What and Why?

What: 1980 Century Coronado 21, Mercruiser MIE 330, 454cid.
General specifications: Centerline length 21'10", Beam 7'11", Draft 26", Freeboard Fwd. 32 1/2", Freeboard Aft, 28", Gross Weight 3,400#, Center of Balance 96" forward of transom along keel.

Why: As a teenager in the 80's I spent many hours skiing on the largest natural lake in IN, Wawasee. Wawasee Boat Company was a Century dealer for years. When Dad would go to the dock to fuel up the 68 Starcraft, (I still have it), I would always run inside to look at the new Century's. They also had several old woodies sitting around too, that we would drool over. Having seen the Coronados and Resorters in the show room and on the lake, I always wanted an Inboard. We would ski behind the I/O until we couldn't go anymore, and we always had fun, but there was nothing like hearing the thunder of a big block inboard. We would always spend at least one week in a rental house on the lake each summer. I can still close my eyes and remember waking up to the distant rumble of a Century, running to the window to look out over the misty lake trying to get a glimpse of it. The Master Crafts, Nautiques,...etc, were great for skiing...but Century's were classy....and I could tell the difference just by listening. Everyone had Nautiques, and Master Crafts....but Century's were a little more distinct. They weren't a dime a dozen type boat, they were like the Cadillac of boats.

They are well built boats, that tend to hold their value.....and I've always wanted one. So last summer, 2010, I'm pulling the 68 Starcraft up to visit the folks on their 28' Bayliner at Main Channel Marina on Wawasee, and my dad knows I drool every time I see an old Coronado or Resorter. He says did ya see that boat when ya pulled in? In my mind I'm thinking he can't be talking about the Coronado, there wasn't a for sale sign on it. So I say, which one? He says...the Coronado...can't believe ya missed it. I said, it's for sale?:D......Now....mind you this is 4th of July Weekend, my wife is at work, and we aren't even thinking about spending any money at this point. I can't resist....I go look at it, It's not a museum piece but it's original and in good shape, needs some cleaning cosmetically.....so I look at dad and say....how much? I'm thinking 14k and it's a no way with the wife. He doesn't know...so we get a sales guy....he says $7,995 on the 2001 tandem trailer, with a 1 yr old cover......I called the wife...she says are you kidding me...how serious are you....bottom line, I knew that boat was going to sell that weekend to someone and I needed to move on it....I took it for a drive...made them rebuild the trans. as a condition of the sale (was leaking) and now it's mine :D My in-laws have a place on lake George (MI/IN boarder)....It stays on the lift up there during the summer, and the kids love tubing behind it.

Fun fact that I discovered....Century did not produce any Coronados after the 50th anniversary edition in 1976 thru 1980. Century did not "officially" make any model year 1980 Coronado's. They manufactured a few in 1980 as 1981 models, but somehow mine was titled as a 1980, and has a HIN that indicates it was built in June of 1980 and was only the second one built that year after the lull in production.

Thanks,

It is a bit of a party barge.....and technically the model is Coronado 21...I've seen them listed both ways 21 or 22....it's length is 21'-10" (w/o platform), and the beam is 7'-11". All of the fiberglass hulls remained unchanged from 1969 to 1998 when the last 5 were built. In 1976 they built a 50th anniversary edition and then didn't produce any until 1981....mine was the second one built after the long lull in production. There is another member here that has one of the 5, 1998's built. In 1982 they offered the Coronado Cardel along with the Coronado. The Cardel was the same hull but was a V-drive or I/O runabout configuration. The Coronado was strictly an Inboard.

Not at all. I shut it down a good distance away and coast on up. :)

To be honest, there's really nothing to load except passengers and maybe a small cooler. We don't spend the entire day in the boat.
