Well it all started with changing the seals under the water pump houseing, well then come to find out they dont make the spring looking seal for the shift rod, so I had to order an entire new assembly, ok so thats not the problem now that I have that Im looking for some good advice on the 2 shiftrods they sent with it.... Due to the new assembly not haveing adaquit space for the old rod with the adjustment to go through it I will have to replace the rod.

Now with that being said, has anyone had expeirence with this new setup? Im really confused, am I really going to have to take this entire lower unit apart to replace this item? And if I do what tools will I need?where to get them? Alot of expert advice here PLEASE.... Also any idea how to adjust the shift rod after this is done?

Parts numered 35 and 36 are the shift rod and the connector below in the foot, is this rod threaded? can I just use some vise grips and unscrew it and install the new one?

Item 35 is threaded into 36. Instead of vice grips, I use a small steel center punch and stick it through the small hole in the top of the shift rod (#35) and turn it. Anything like a nail or something like that will work.

The existing shift rod is in 2 pieces the new one is only one piece. Im confused and really dont want to make a wrong decision and have to take this lower unit apart, or do yall think I should just take it apart? I dont want to start twisting on this thing unless someone could chime in that has or has had the same design and dealt with it before....

Re: What did I get myself into with my lower unit?

Your making this alot harder than it really is bro..taking the entire lower as you keep calling it apart consist of two allen head bolts, and two more 9/16" nuts. thats it...Hard to take a pic but its really simple to understand how it goes back together when you are finsihed. The rod threads into a piece that actually shifts you into gear. There fore you will need to take the lower apart to get to it otherwise your just wasting time. But really, if you have done this so far, then you can finish it no problem. Just take your time and do it right by remembering where stuff goes. Its sounds alot harder than it really is.

I was just looking at the manual and its saying im going to need a puller and all kinds of other crap but the manual I have doesnt even show the same lower unit so my guess is I have the wrong one. Im pretty good about when i take things apart how to put them back together, just didnt want to do it wrong and ask yalls advice first

What size is your outboard?

Also I cant see needing a puller unless its something I have never done before. Once the two allen head bolts are removed twist and pull the plate off then reach inside with a box end wrench and remove the 9/16th nut. Then remove the nut on the top by that shifter rod. And the whole thing will slide down.... But post up your outboard size so we all know which one you have.

ok, i see you have a 85 hp older around 90's model. I would think it would be the same as the slightly smaller outboards but cant be 100% SURE. So,,, look on the back after you have removed the prop. There may be two bolts there. Allen heads. If it has those, and it has the two 9/16th nuts as well. I would say go for it. Worst thing is you find you do indeed need a puller and have to just rent one from the auto place, or you just put it back together. Not a hard thing to do. Kinda hard to mess this up unless you have extra parts leftover! LOL Dont forget the one nut will be behind the plate after removing the allen heads.

Re: What did I get myself into with my lower unit?

Ok so in the house looking at the manual I am able to make my own puller, applying heat and deep creep waiting for the seal to break. I had 2 flat head bolts that were installed behind the prop to the anode, then 4 bolts removed all and used 2 6inch bolts 2 washers and 2 nuts and some thick aluminum here at the house to kind of create my own puller. Im noticeing in the manual their are specific pullers and installing tools that are MIA and not made anymore so hopefully I can use a small bearing remover and a punch to remove and reinstall the leg drive shaft bearings under the retainer (under the impeller houseing). I still need to find out if their is any difference in sizing for the retainer wrench to remove and reinstall the retainer?

Re: What did I get myself into with my lower unit?

Well thats diffrent for sure. I just pryed mine off with my hands. It did not require a puller at all. But they are all basically the same so no worries. Just remember the way you take it out and then reinstall it the same way. Common sense here goes along way. But anyway take your time and you will see that its really not rocket science after all. I didnt have a manual, diagram, or even a blow up on here of my outboard and did it within an hour....and I'm just a dumb ole electricain.

Yeah, take a pic of the top of that unit. I wanna see down in there. I can tell you that you do not wanna keep trying to pull that out like that. There is a gear in there that will prevent you from doing so. You still need to seperate the lower foot from the foot. Then the gear will come out of the top, and your axle there...it will simply pull right out. But first take a pic like I said and I wanna be able to clearly see the front part of the foot. On top of course. Take several pics then post up n I will reply.

Second look...kinda looks like your may not seperate at all! LOL. In that case you will still have to find a way to get the top gear out. What I mean is there are gears on the prop axle, they mesh with a gear that is driven by the actual axle from the outboard. That big one in your pic. You may see if there is a way that you can remove that. Just sit back and take a minute or two to think about what could be holding it in.

I have the same bellows type seal for my shifter on my 89 Force 125...haven't been able to find it yet here either..Mine has a tear in it ...I cleaned it and used a generous coating of 3M 5200 and let it set up a couple of days...looks like it may work....I'll keep an eye on the lower unit for water intrusion as I use it...
