Worst, 1997 Explorer 2 door. The tail wagged the dog. We also had a 2003 Accord that was not very good at towing our previous jetski. 2nd worst.

Ya, I got to spend my first night at sea but not by choice.
The worst part is that it was my starter that crapped out and I had just replaced it the day before with a refurb :(

I dont know if this falls into the worst tow vehicle or most dangerous tow vehicle. When I was growing up my dad had and still has a '77 bonanza cuddy. 20.5'. our tow vehicle at the time was a 91 s-10 with the 2.8 v6. on top of all that it was a standard and to make things even worse it was on the bumper not on a class 3 hitch. But it worked. Slowly be it but it worked.

Re: Worst tow vehicle you have used !!!

I had an '85 Bronco II with a V6 and a 5 speed manual. It was 4WD, so it wasn't bad in low and on ramps, but the clutch would burn all of the time in high and it smelt like burning horse ****, although I don't know what that smells like, maybe like burning Bronco clutch  Also, the short wheelbase absolutely sucked, brakes were weak etc. I was pulling a 17 footer w/140 OMC I/O then. Too heavy and with no brakes on the trailer. We went all over heck and back though. At the time I thought it was great. Didn't really know any better . . .

Glad I started this thread. Some great responses. My summary of my recent experiences is.........I blew the Windstar's trumpet for a while but am now looking for something with a little more towing guts. Jimmy, Blazer, Explorer, Grand Cherokee etc.
My Windstar was fitted with the tow package. Oil cooler, tranny cooler, final drive ratio, heavier rear suspension etc........but it gave up at 140,000 km towing less than half it's rated capacity and never being "pushed" so to speak.

I bought a tow vehicle to replace my convertible :)

a 2000 Jimmy SLT.

Couldn't wait to get my Four Winns 170 Horizon home after buying in February, so got the wife to go out on a beautiful Sunday morning in our Toyota Camry wagon. It took us 40 min to get to the boat dealer. Just started snowing when we left. By the time we got on the highway it was a blizzard. Passed a 16 car pileup on the way and by the time we got home 3 hours later we already had 6 inches of snow on the ground. Almost couldn't make the turn into our street because of the lack of traction in the front wheels.

Re: Worst tow vehicle you have used !!!

I have four examples of stupidity in my history. I towed first a 17' 1974 Rinker on an angle iron trailer (the trailer weighed more than the boat) and later a 20' 1986 wellcraft (about 4700 lbs with the trailer) with a 1984 Jeep cj-7 with a 258 and then a 360, when the trans exploded I used a 1987 Windstar, when that trans exploded I used a 1979 Ford Courier, when that engine exploded, I used a 1967 International Scout 80 with 4 wheel non-power drum brakes and manual steering and a bumper hitch. Talk about white knuckled driving---

Re: Worst tow vehicle you have used !!!

The worst that I've owned had to be my 87 Dodge Ramcharger with a 318ci engine and 3 spd auto trans, it had trouble towing a jon boat, it would buck and sway with anything on the hitch. I traded that for a Bronco II that did fine with everything up to a 19' boat. My current truck, a 4cyl 5spd 94 Ranger does fine but only up to about 4000 lbs or so. It will tow more but you have to be careful and take your time. The best I've ever had was an '86 300ci 6cyl powered F150 with a 4 speed with granny low. The truck would pull anything. It wasn't fast, but it would pull like a diesel. I owned that one for 10 years with no trouble at all.
