Re: Barracuda Restoration

Went and picked up supplies today I should have all the resin and cloth I need.

I also got foam he convinced my on doing the other method of foaming by pouring the foam into drilled holes beside the stringer because it holdes the deck much better as well as not having the hassel of installing the deck on the foam as well as the stringer.

An issue with pouring foam is the tempurature a lot of people are waiting for a warm day, but its not the air temp that counts but the foam temp that counts so put it under a heat lamp or inside untell its at least 70 C and it will be fine.

Heres what I got done today:

before I started the stringer

Heres how rotten the stringer was (mabey I shouldent of used the boat this season...)

Re: Barracuda Restoration

The stringers were designed really pourly on this boat. It was fully glassed except for the top so water and moisture could get in but was effectively trapped in the wood....

Heres 40 minutes later:

I just have some grinding to do to prep the hull for a new stinger the Ill cut and install a new stringer hopefully tommorow (got drivers ED all weekend)
then start on the new deck which will be a real PITA so I don't have the ugly lip the old deck had.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Here's the work I did last night I finished late so I diden't have time to finish post them.

First I needed to make a new stringer, following the basic method oops used on his boat I made mine, using the "post and scribe" method I got the curve of the bottom of the stringer.

Here is the stringer held in place

BoatRepair163.jpg

The scribe I made

BoatRepair167.jpg

It makes an easy line to follow

BoatRepair165.jpg

Heres it rough fit in the boat

Re: Barracuda Restoration

My other issus is the length and how it supports the deck,

The old stringer was only 8' long and dident support the bow area of the deck so it was very weak. My new stringer is the full length, I am aware of the potential strains it could put on the hull but replicating what was there doesn't feel right and it should be fine because it is just strengthening the keel an extra few feet.

My other issue was that the local rona diden't sell more then 8' 3/4 pt ply so I followed one of oops methods again on making a longer stringer.

cut each piece ten inches in half way through. then chisel it out.

BoatRepair157.jpg

they sister together quite nicly

BoatRepair159.jpg

After I had the bottom slope cut out I cut the deck height. to get the angle I measured the height of the old stringer at the 0' mark and 8' mark, then marked that on the new stringer and made a line between the two and its one easy cut.

I then coated it with resin and once it was tacky I put two layers of csm on either side. Once in the boat I plan to bulk it up a lot with fiberglass I plan on just capping the stringer with fiberglass I may try to fully wrap it but I doubt I can make the 90 o angles.

BoatRepair171.jpg

The channel that the old stringer was in would take alot of grinding to be able to properly fit the new stringer and I risk going through the hull so I filled it with P/B.

Major stringer work done today.

First I bedded it with 3m 5200, man is that stuff ever hard to squeeze out!

If you are wondering what the black spot in picture 1-2 is, it is the repair I had to do last year on the hull It held up very well and will in the future.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Then I set up my work station.

BoatRepair177.jpg

I find that if im going to fillit something I like to lay the glass on right after eliminating lots of grinding and giving a perfect fillet

BoatRepair178.jpg

BoatRepair179.jpg

BoatRepair180.jpg

Tommorow I will have some grinding to do on the stringer first trim the top and "ruff and scuff" the stringer I plan on adding 1 more layer of glass to the edge and 2 or so the top of the stringer to cap it off.

Warm the tube in the oven on low heat in a pan first... then it comes out real easy!

O great idea ill heat it up for sure next time !

After I finished up last night on the boat+posting I had a little itch in my eye tried rinsing it out no luck... went to emerg 4 hrs later got the wood sliver out of my eye, my eye is fine as it was in the white area, all in all made for an interesting 4 hours. I was wearing saftey glasses but from now on I will probably wear goggles even if they fog up.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Guess you learned a lesson on googles. You can get some products that reduce the fogging. Those eyes are the only set you got, so take care of them.

Gee, Bat Boy almost cut his finger off, now this..... :(

Then again, I'm no angel either. :p

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Good news is im all better now :)

Tonight I cut out and glassed the bottom of 1 piece of the deck I also glassed in support pieces for the pedestal seats.

I took a bunch of photos of the process and would love to show em but photobucket isn't working for me, I would try using iboats.com method but my photos are too big. Ill try and upload em tonight.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

Ya thats probably it.

Heres last nights work,

I used the old pieces as a template it made it a lot quicker.

Ruffed and Scuffed the deck (this is the bottom)

BoatRepair181.jpg

The two pieces are renforcement for the pedestals

You have to pre cut the cloth before mixing any resin.

BoatRepair185.jpg

BoatRepair186.jpg

Next I wet out the deck, you have to do this because the wood will suck some resin out of the cloth this is very important.

BoatRepair187.jpg

BoatRepair188.jpg

I took a note from "oops" a signed the bottom of my deck just incase someone else tears it out would be neat to see that.

Re: Barracuda Restoration

I got slowed down a bit from where I had hoped to be (damm school). But I have the deck fully cut out. I have to glass the bottoms of the bow and stern pieces as well as shape it, hopefully tonight that will be done. Then tabbing the deck in and foam.

Here is a pic of the stern deck area

BoatRestoration001.jpg

The bow deck area

BoatRestoration005.jpg

And the lap joint between two pieces of deck. I couldent just leave the deck how it used to be so I used the lap joint to make it much stronger.

BoatRestoration007.jpg

I had another setback with my burnt out grinder, it took a lot of effort to return then I was told I was lucky for picking a grinder with a warrenty:eek:

Re: Barracuda Restoration

note new grinder, use compressed air and blow out the cooling ports, to get dust out.
