You COULD leave the wood in but...I agree with Kevin, I'd remove it and use PB to fill em.

Hey everyone. Been a busy week at work. Got myself some more grinding discs and blades for my oscillating tool. Plan to put a couple more days in this weekend grinding away. Then I will vacuum out the hull and wipe up with acetone.

Question is I plan to get my first order in for fibreglass supplies. But not sure what I will need. I am going with the west epoxy system so just wondering on what materials and quantities would be a good start to get me going. I hope that I will have most of the grinding done this weekend so I can start cutting my transom and stringers out. Photos will be posted after the weekend of itchiness and cleanup.

Thanks all

Another question for you fibreglass guys. Since I am using epoxy for this restore, I figure I won’t be going to the same thickness that was laid up from mfg using poly? Or am I? I know the transom will need to be since it’s an inboard outboard setup. But do the stringers need to be that thick with glass?

I use West fillers because I like blending them, but their resin is just too expensive for what it is...USC's 3:1 laminating resin is real good, and less expensive, JMO

If u use 2 staggered layers of 17 oz biax cloth for the stringers, and 3-4 layers of 17 for the transom, the boat will likely outlive you, structurally. You can cap the stringers with 6-9 oz cloth or eglass to make things easier.

You can also use lighter cloth like 7-9 oz in additional layers to increase the strength to weight ratio...IE- 4 layers of 8 oz cloth is stronger than 2 layers of 17 oz...the plywood effect ;)

If you're using epoxy you don't use 1708 just use the 17oz biaxial fabric. NO CSM is required with epoxy. For the Transom two layers of 170z is plenty and for the stringers I'd use 2 layers of 8.5oz fabric. Again no CSM is required with epoxy. Vertical surfaces are a bit problematic when using epoxy since it takes so long to tack up it has a tendency to keep running to the bottom leaving the top starved for resin. You'll need to "Babysit" the layup and keep pulling the resin back to the top to keep the glass properly coated.

Thanks guys. I plan to get their 738 material for the transom and any buildup and then get some lighter cloth for stringers, etc. I hope to encase the stringers out of the boat so then all I will need to do is set them in on and tab. That’s the plan at least.

Oh ya. Is acetone ok for clean up when I’m done grinding?

Trying to find a decent supplier in Canada for Fabrics :( Not having much luck.. I was looking at West and their fabrics and it can get pricey....

Any suggestions??

Oh ya and on a side note... I have decided that this build will include the transformation of a center console. Going to be a custom built one. Very excited.. I figure I had better decide now before I start to make stringers, bulkheads etc... since I will be needing to add chases for the controls, wiring etc. under the deck....

Before any wood goes in you can simply use soap water and hose it out to the garboard drain. I also throw in some bleach to fight any mold issues.
Definitely use acetone prior to glassing. It's not cheap. @ 17.00 a gallon here.

Ya acetone is not cheap. Since the boat is on a non rolling stand I will probably skip the soap and water :(

If you have a hole in the transom like a garboard drain that's all you need to let it drain out. Hopefully your boat is on a pitch to the rear.

No pitch. It’s level right now as I am grinding still. I could probably tip it up a bit and put a bucket under the drain hole. We will see. I would like to get a few buddies to help pick it up and bring it out to the front lawn and wash it good. This weekend I will hoping to finish up grinding. Then the clean up will begin.

Hey WOG. Been looking for a singer to do my upholstery work. Any thoughts on the 99k models?
