    Correct installation of thermostat?

The element (I think you were referring to it as the brass sleeve) always goes into the engine so that the hot engine water opens the TStat by heating that element. Are you sure you aren't getting an air lock that prevents the hot engine water from heating the element? Many new thermostats...

    Help with materials (recommendations needed)

Getting the stringers properly set dimensionally and level takes a bit of time to get them bedded to the hull so unless you are working on it full time you may want to buy smaller quantities to start. I have been buying one or two 5 gallon pails at a time and I have been working on mine since...

    Gloves for Acetone Washing?

I am getting ready to start the sanding and cleaning prep of my new floor. That means a lot of acetone use before glassing with lots of floor surface to glass. So far, I have used nitrile gloves for small washing jobs that I can do quickly but those gloves start to deteriorate fast and at...

    EXHAUST

I used a full closed system from Monitor Products. My 1996 5.7L block came from a truck so was able to go full closed system. If you go this route, it takes a little work to do the install due to hose differences and position of the fittings on the exhaust manifolds and risers. I even had an...

    EXHAUST

I went with HGE manifolds and risers on my scratch build 5.7L Vortec. I went further though and installed closed cooling with the dry joint system.

Upgrading trailer tires and rims - need advice

Interesting article on ST versus LT for trailers located here: https://rvingwithmarkpolk.com/2012/11/08/trailer-towing-st-tires-vs-lt-tires/ It talks about RV trailers but much of the information would probably apply to boat trailers.

What Lube to Pull (or Push) Fuel Fill Line through ABS Pipe?

Thanks all. I got the main fuel fill hose through with dish soap. The others are easy in comparison.

New member - deck install panga

On my deck, I put a bevel on the underside edge of the deck plywood where it meets the wall of the hull. Not sure if that is needed but I like that it doesn't present a sharp edge of the plywood to the hull and increases the surface area for bonding if you put down a peanut butter bead under...

What Lube to Pull (or Push) Fuel Fill Line through ABS Pipe?

Thanks all. I tried some of the electrical wire pull liquid yesterday but it didn't work all that good. I don't have a source close by for the Power Tune. Tried Dawn dishwashing soap full strength and managed to get the fuel fill line to go through but still with a lot of effort. Once in...

What Lube to Pull (or Push) Fuel Fill Line through ABS Pipe?

I had to use 3 inch ABS pipe for routing my fuel fill line to the belly tank. I had to make a couple of corner turns with elbows. I need to route the main fuel hose, vent hose, and ground wire through the pipe. The marine grade hose is pretty rigid so I need a lube to pull the hoses through...

PLEASE HELP NEW BOAT OWNER CRACK

If you decide to rebuild it yourself, even if you just replace the housing, read the manuals and study the specialized tools needed to properly set up the drive on re-assembly. You might change your mind about DIY.

Merc 140 fuel pump install, no ros?

Note that the carb fuel bowl overflow at the top of the carb also has to be directed into the throat of the carb in case it overflows.

    what's one more boat ? - 1979 Sunfish

Yup the sail gives you some time to get it done. Some people have put floatation foam inside their aluminum mast. I do miss sailing but got too old to manage stepping the mast on my 24ft American. I have sailed 12 foot Kites, International 14's, 16 foot C-Larks, 18 foot Lightnings, 16 foot...

    what's one more boat ? - 1979 Sunfish

Handy tip from an old sailor, if you capsize and can't get it upright quickly, swim around and tie a life jacket to the top of the mast. That helps prevent it from going turtle. Enjoy the swim when you capsize, unless you are quick enough to climb up over the gunwale and onto the centerboard...

    what's one more boat ? - 1979 Sunfish

Keep in mind that all sailboats can easily be capsized and especially the smaller ones. When they do capsize, they rely heavily upon the floatation foam to keep it afloat and to right it once you get yourself out of the water at the centerboard. Waterlogged foam is not good news on any boat...

    Gimble to housing

And, are you talking about the two bolts (actually threaded pins) that hold the bell housing inside the gimbal ring? If so and this is an alpha drive, yes there are spacers between the gimbal ring and the bell housing, one on each side. They are available if you lost yours.

    1989 Sea Ray CC moulding

Thanks. I just received the V12-0317BKA. My boat is a 22 footer so I had to order two rolls of it since the rub rail measures 55 feet all the way around. I haven't checked it yet for fit.

    Floor and transom repair.

I am in the process of finishing up my transom, floor and stringers and still buying resin, glass, floatation foam and miscellaneous supplies. That link shows a good pricing breakdown but at current inflation, I would add about 30 to 35% to those prices.

    Floor and transom repair.

Keep in mind that for glass work it is best to keep your garage area at 65 to 70 degrees F (18 to 22 degrees C) during application and for several hours after. Best to keep it warm for a few days to make sure the boat hull comes up to temperature first. For floatation foam installation best to...
