1968 6 HP Evinrude need help

Take a rainy day and rebuild the carb (need a carb kit). Best technique imo is to soak both halves in solvent, and open every orifice you can find (soft wire and carb spray.) Remove the aluminum cap on top, and clean underneath (idle passages). In doing so, check to see if there is the point...

Evinrude. 140 Hp. Not charging. The tach is working

I'm with you on willy-nilly throwing parts at it. But it does appear that the unit is causing problems, and the thing can be dangerous if it suffers from overheating. Get the rubber gasket that goes with it. Post back -- hope that's the fix.

Should I add a fuel filter?

I would install the Racor filter pictured, or one similar. You can see water in the fuel at a glance, as caught by the filter.

Evinrude. 140 Hp. Not charging. The tach is working

If mine, I would replace the regulator/rectifier. Do some testing first -- bench test result in anything? You could have some hull issues. Maybe water under the flooring -- some shifting weight.

    Mid to high speed miss.

^^Well, carb for the mod. number has a low speed needle. Perhaps he has different carbs, or a different model. Initial settings given are generic for older models so equipped. Maybe you can make it all clear.... We see through a glass, darkly.

    Mid to high speed miss.

By the book, the high speed needle should be set first at or near WOT on the lake. Then the l.s. needle is set/reset.

    Mid to high speed miss.

If the motor idles smoothly with the needle settings you describe, I would use those settings. Does it also run smoothly at speed with those settings?

Evinrude. 140 Hp. Not charging. The tach is working

Is the boat slowing and speeding up with the rpm fluctuations? A bad regulator can give you wonky gauge readings. You say the engine is missing, but I'm not sure of that -- might be just the gauge. Make sure the fuel is fresh (adding fresh fuel to old is not the solution). Water in the fuel...

Looking for help, new boat owner

I think the only settings would be initial settings for h.s. needle and l.s. needle (assuming you have one or both): 3/4 turn open (c.clockwise) for h.s., 1 1/2 open for l.s. The float should be even/level with the edge of the inverted carb top. If you can grab a parts diagram of your carb...

3 HP Evinrude fuel supply problem

+1. Also the shut off valve may be gummed up if the motor wasn't properly stored (fuel run out before storage). Be very careful handling that filter, as they can disintegrate between your fingers.

2001 Johnson 25 hp starting problems

I always think spark, fuel, carb first for starting issues, If I don't know whether fuel was run out before storage, I expect a carb cleaning/rebuild. ++1 on impeller replacement.

Evinrude. 140 Hp. Not charging. The tach is working

Try the bench test on p. 8: https://www.cdielectronics.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/CDI%20Troubleshooting%20Guide%20-%202012.pdf Replacement cost isn't too bad at about $100 unless shipping cost is exorbitant.

^^maybe too rich (chugs, stalls, hard to restart....)

Top cylinder not firing Johnson 55ESL69A

Inline spark tester is not the same -- get an open air adjustable. No "plastic seats" for the l.s. needle. There is a plastic needle valve bearing in at the point of the needle. Plastic valve retainer is typically red and holds the needle in place after setting. Can't do much tuning on muffs.

Top cylinder not firing Johnson 55ESL69A

plastic needle valve retainer might be worn (or missing), producing some idle mix variations.
