Evinrude 70 hp 3-cyl 2stroke dies at high throttle

Sounds like you need to see if there is spark at high throttle -- can be done with a repurposed timing gun. Check for flash at each lead/plug wire (no flash means no spark).

Runs great wide Open but hard to get it there

^^no flash, no spark. Does the ignition produce a 3/8" spark at each lead?

Boat has never had transom drilled before. Where do I start?

template would be of the motor transom bracket. Check against the one you already did on the transom. Clamp to the transom with a c-clamp, and do measurements for anti ventilation plate height -- usually even with the boat bottom. If you think you are going to experiment with mounting...

Evinrude 70 hp 3-cyl 2stroke dies at high throttle

Get an open air adjustable spark tester, and measure spark. When at the auto parts store for the spark tester, buy or rent a compression tester. Post results for compression and spark tests.

Boat has never had transom drilled before. Where do I start?

    Construct a template out of 1/8 - 1/4" plywood.

New to me 1963 40hp super seahorse no electronic shift

Fast and wet, and a little bumpy, as I recall. I never got another Whaler, but carry no grudges. Nice rigs. I'm still a little curious about the 11' Whaler with maybe an 18, but I'm too fat for that now I think.

New to me 1963 40hp super seahorse no electronic shift

Believe so (choice of two types) -- but will stand corrected. Get the box first, then the cables -- in fact, measure for cables (measure old ones if you still have them). Look for a box complete with cables. I did a '63 Big Twin 10 or 15 years ago, on a 13' Whaler, but no recollection of...

    HELP!! 77 Evinrude 70hp misfire

A few folks out here screaming OIL, I think. Hope the motor and the trip are both successful.

    Starts, Runs, won't restart

^^Much less than that if an electrical fault -- electrical overheating issues apply to a starter too, which might then not produce sufficient rpm for starting/restarting.

    HELP!! 77 Evinrude 70hp misfire

seems like you might be fixed on a flooding problem -- but that may be a result of no spark (or spark that is too weak).

    HELP!! 77 Evinrude 70hp misfire

In two weeks you could swap out the head gasket and refinish the head mating surface. That might increase compression and/or improve running. Did the motor overheat at any point? Running with a timing light to see if you are dropping a cylinder, as suggested, is also something you can do...

The "right" box would be a '60s Simplex box, which is maybe a little more stylized than the earlier ones. That would be the correct fit, as you say.

    1993 70hp stumped!

Might initially try setting the needles 1/4 turn out, 1/2 out... until it pops. I'm doing some trial and error settings with a Rochester quadrajet to get the secondaries blowing my grey hair back. So far it appears to require a very lean setting.

    Starts, Runs, won't restart

^^That's an interesting idea! There are lots of no-start reports with a variety of motors, where the problem could be overheated ignition parts.

    HELP!! 77 Evinrude 70hp misfire

Shops typically work with their own fuel to rule out using owner's contaminated tank. When you added fresh fuel, did you add it to a fresh, empty tank? If not you are burning contaminated fuel. The likeliest culprit is water. Draw some fuel out of the tank you use and let it settle out in a...

    Surface gap plugs

Champion J11C was an alternate for many of the Scotts, sm to large hp., gapped at .035. Might provide better low speed operation.

    1961 Johnson QD 22 10hp - chattering shift arm

^^like they said. You might open up the clamp just a little with a bladed screwdriver, just to make sure the rod goes fully in place.

    1993 70hp stumped!

Might be a case where testing #1 plug on the block might be a proper test. Maybe a bad plug.

    1990 Evinrude 9.9HP Powerpack

Yes, obviously indicates that powerhead temp must be closely monitored -- although doesn't guarantee longevity for any ignition bits under the f/w. The CD2 has otherwise been a dependable power pack.

Doesn't restart after warm-up. How hot does it get (top of the heads)?
