Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Getting close to done stripping the other half. Would 100 grit sandpaper be coarse enough to prep the bare aluminum? I’m using it now for rough sanding (RO orbital sander) and the swirls don’t “look” very aggressive for a tooth. I’m using interlux’s Interprotect 2000E 2 part primer and I don’t...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Another crack at it got the starboard bottom stripped. I learned that the paint that sat submerged in the water was much, much easier to strip with the stripper. (One coat vs 3-4) The paint on the bow transition was stuck on like cat poop on a blanket and the aluminum beneath was pristine. I’ve...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

I see what you mean now. Are your stringers the same height on both sides? Two options come to mind; 1) laminate a strip of 1/4” thick ply to the underside of your floorboard 2) rivet small pieces of 1/4” aluminum sheared plate or flat bar to the rib ends. I’ve got some 6061 or 3003 that you are...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Got a pic of your “crimped” rib ends? Mine a stamped and rounded. My stringers were loose also. I initially thought it was from flex, but your idea makes much more sense. Any flex would have been minute. And if your foam was as waterlogged-heavy as mine, that’s a lot of powerful expansion. I...

I was so torn on stripping vs sanding. Even after making the decision back to sanding, I decided it would give me a better understanding on how deep the pitting was and what pitting truly needed attention if I stripped it. This was first attempt at chemical stripping and I was surprised to see...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

I’m using brass threaded rubber plugs. On top of the floor there will be a small rubber flange. Once the plug is inserted and bolted it expands beneath the floor. I just trying to find it. But it is stashed away with the rest of the components. Once I start the floors, I will be pulling out...

    1979 Starcraft 16’ SS Refresh

Wow, it’s a lot of work but that’s a winter paradise. Hope your gennie is up to the task. Wood stove would be nice but that is a lot of work too. Are you on gas or propane? They have fireplaces/stoves that should run without hydro(??) for future update ideas…

The scale is a great idea, thanks for that. I was using clear mixing cups for the Gluvit, but it was a pourable viscosity. I can just use mixing sticks to put dollops of marine Tex on the scale. It’s thick iirc.

That’s going to make for a very useful deck space. You could put swivel seats on top if that’s not your plan already

Ok, so my Marine Tex just arrived. I guess I will have to mix small batches with dollar store measuring spoons. The admiral will kill me if I use hers

Yeah she’s not going to be that. She’s a 50’er. Dock rash on both sides. 2 rock strikes underneath. But I want the hull faired and painted. The sides can look 46-47 years old for another season….but someday she’ll be sharp. Function 1st, shine later

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Today I messed around with a bit of RO sanding bristle disc patch areas. It’s not worth skimping here I think. The paint thickness is minimal so all pitting i see is into the hull skin, so I picked up a litre of stripper to try out. I’m just going to focus on the bottom for now. So I can...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

I am waiting for my stainless wheels to come in and I have a bristle disc that will get into the pits. I’ve used Gluvit inside on the rivet tails, the g flex is extra insurance on the other side

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

I had a lot of pitting on the transom below the waterline as well when I redid it. I used Marine Tex on this pitting before I re-painted and it cleaned up nicely. The patch of pitting you see is the starboard side bottom under the battery location. There is one drainage hole in the keel and...

So, I finally I have some photos to update. Nothing wonderful to look at but a glimpse of what I’m dealing with. If you guys don’t mind, could you please take a look at the pictures of the pitting that seems to be through the paint. I cleared a spot and it is into the aluminum as you can see in...

Thanks MNH. I requested for Alumahawk dealers in Canada. They kindly and quickly responded that there are longer any distributors North of the border. I suspect it has something to do with compounds that may environmental restrictions here. I’m going to chase down the interlux performance...
