    surely yet $$$$ on this oldy for an hour's labor ($100-125) OP could by a gasket and helicoil kit. as a first time job . keeping shavings out of the cyl would require grease and practice.

    you will need to pull the cyl head and install a helicoil using the proper kit. use full metal inserts not the spring looking type. use some red lock-tite kit comes with a proper size drill tap and inserts did it on a 7.5 and all good.

    It does seem OP had the carb work done in post #10 in theory eliminating that option & leading to a possible pump problem...... my thinking being that at higher RPMs the pump is getting a lot more pressure pulses from the crankcase to have it pull in more fuel for distribution to the carbs...

    recheck the fuel pump operation especially the pulse hose for air airs due to cracks or loose clips. you checked the diaphragm but actual pump operation can only be confirmed by measuring fuel pressure output to carbs....something I have never done mind you. FP are not terribly expensive...

    seat the needle all the way in counting turns as you shut it down... don'T worry about the spring remove the needle and spring and blast the internal orifice (passage way) with carb cleaner and a blast of air do it twice just in case.... wear safety glasses while doing so reinstall...

    carbs cleaned recently... do you mean removed, orifices cleaned out float checked out etc... these are old style carbs easy to clean up incl.. side channel for LS upper drip chamber under the die size plug which feeds fuel for idling properly .
