    Battery charger recommendation for winter

I turn on the NOCO about now and leave it on until Spring.

    Battery charger recommendation for winter

NOCO Genius chargers are great. Turn it on and forget it until Spring when it's time to go boating again.

1970 Larson Lapline - Floor Help Needed

I didn’t see any restoration threads of that boat here at iboats, but here’s one from fiberglass.com. Not sure what year it is, but it might be helpful. https://www.fiberglassics.com/forum/member-projects/116752-larson-lapline-all-american.html

Bought my first boat to cut, gut and rebuild from bow to stern, including engine. Killed my back and suffered the wrath of the fiberglass demons

I heated my garage with propane heaters when I was glassing my boat. Unless you’re running a chopper gun and are putting extreme amounts of vapors in the air, you’re not going to have a problem with a propane heater. The MEKP is the really flammable stuff, so I just make sure that I opened it...

    Covid!

Yeah, the bout of COVID I had pre-vaccine was WAY worse than the two bouts I had after the vaccine.

    Transom question

Composite decking does not have much strength. I'd use plywood and just make sure it's treated well with epoxy or paint or something similar.

    What oil should I use?

Dino oil is fine. Synthetic oil is fine. Just make sure the oil has sufficient zinc and is of the proper viscosity and all will be fine. Synth oil will not cause your seals to leak, etc.

Bone headed move - put the plug in with 3M 4200

That debonder looks pretty nifty, but for less than $10 (2/3 the cost of the debonding agent), you could just replace the whole flange and plug.

    I have a leak.

When I reassembled and tested my boat after restoration, I found a leak and it was exactly as you describe. It was tricky because the water ran down the Y-pipe. It took a bit of searching to find it was leaking from the rubber boots on the elbows.

    Stringer rotten

Exterior grade plywood is fine. If you need something thicker than what your local store carries, you can laminate sheets together using Titebond III any kind of exterior-rated construction adhesive (e.g., PL Premium).

    Covid!

I’ve had it three times, and it’s never been much fun. First was before the vaccine was available and it was the sickest I’ve been (except maybe for pneumonia). I’ll be happy if I never have COVID again.

Good luck, all you Florida folks. We're pulling for you!

    handy cap crane mounting

I'd think the swim platform would be your best bet, but you would probably need to fiberglass in some kind of large backing plate underneath to distribute the load. I'm no engineer, but it would probably be good to find someone who could calculate the load exerted by the base when you have a 200...

    Floor replacement

I thought I read recently that solid PVC was prone to substantial changes in dimensions with temperatures. In fact, folks who installed solid PVC trim on their houses were having all sorts of problems because the PVC would swell and shrink in BOTH length and width as it cycled through hot and...

    My new “old” Larson bowrider

Stringers are the wooden structural members that run the length of the boat, from the bow to the stern. Bulkheads are the shorter structural members that run perpendicular to the the stringers. Some places to look for rot: in the ski locker, you should be able to see the stringers that form...

Upper and Lower Drain Plug Merc Sterndrive Alpha 1 Gen 1 Question

Yes, both should have a gasket and the same gasket type can be used. I like the Sierra gaskets for this application.

Changed Gear Oil, Does this look right?

My used gear lube often smells funky. As long as the gear lube isn't milky-looking, I wouldn't worry too much.

    Help Buying Boat

Best bet is to have a buddy who knows something about boats (or even better, a marine surveyor or mechanic) look at the boats with you. The condition of the boat is of primary concern, so ignore bells and whistles and make sure the boat is sound. Personally, I would not consider buying a boat...

Does the antifreeze you use really matter?

The problem with running antifreeze into an engine via the muffs is that the engine's cooling jacket and hoses are already full of water. When antifreeze is introduced via the muffs, the water in the engine dilutes it. So the water-antifreeze mix that exits the engine may look pink, but there is...

Does the antifreeze you use really matter?

If you're draining after running the pink stuff in through the muffs, it doesn't matter much if the antifreeze that comes out is diluted or not. Many of us just skip the antifreeze part and drain the engine and related hoses, which also protects against freezing. The problem comes when folks...
