Bought my first boat to cut, gut and rebuild from bow to stern, including engine. Killed my back and suffered the wrath of the fiberglass demons

probably not the best idea to coat the tank in resin or for that matter powder coat as some do . best is to get some epoxy paint and a good splash over. any chips in the resin that get salt water in start to corrode and can ruin a perfectly good tank over time , just paint it or leave it raw.

What type of gas tank for '79 Johnson 35hp?

the old red metal tanks are a great looking accessory when they are properly restored. yes they do rust and good ones are very hard to come by these days as most have ended up in the dump , those that are survivors are collector pieces. the one you have in the pics will work just fine , have...

1994 112 johnson special, blown cylinder? What now?

looks a bit deep for a re bore , may need a sleeve , unless the motor has sentimental value , scrap that power head and find a good used one and bolt it to the LU.

    aluminum wheels stuck to hub

the best thing i found for mating surfaces that are exposed to salt is a coat of spray contact adhesive from the hobby shop , that stuff seals the surfaces it is acrylic based so most petroleum products such as grease does not break it down. to add , i also just loosen the wheel nuts and drive...

1994 112 johnson special, blown cylinder? What now?

85 on one cylinder is not the end of the world . drop a few mil of oil in that cylinder , recheck compression , if it comes up a bit its probably just rings if so: link and sync her up and run her till she drops dead. it could be a number of things but a good guess would be rings are worn. if...

    Motor cut out on me -- Johnson/Suzuki 2005 115hp 4 stroke

it sounds from the description you have given you may have an issue with the fuel pressure regulator. these issues can be a bit hard to trace. However best guess is pressure reg failing to keep up. vapor lock can happen on these motors when fuel pressure is low either from a failing fuel pump...

    Is this trailer repairable?

no way i would trust a trailer with that much rust in that area to be on the road with a boat on it . even welded up it will be a bit iffy as to where it would possibly snap in an emergency situation , as posted it may not be seen but there is a good chance there is more further rust in that...

    No sparking v4

its an old johnson motor flywheel that op is asking how to hold to get it tight. as i posted a screw driver in the flywheel teeth locked against the starter will hold it whilst the 100 foot pound is on the nut whilst it is tightened. forget the rattle gun it will trash the motor , the wife will...

    No sparking v4

i just stab a big flat head screw driver in the teeth on the FW and wedge against the starter, get someone to hold it there whilst i torque the nut, get it in the right spot and the screwdriver will stay in place once tension is on the nut , however it works better with a helper pushing the...

Bought my first boat to cut, gut and rebuild from bow to stern, including engine. Killed my back and suffered the wrath of the fiberglass demons

being your first build and the fact this is a learning build polyester is going to make life easer as IMO it is much more forgiving when it comes to lay up. there are things that can go wrong with epoxy that take lots of work to fix. epoxy is also very poisonous with that precaution against...

    Fiberglass patch bilge pump area

paint some resin or gel coat over that ground back area , get some 5200 and bond the pump strainer strait on the floor, clip the new pump on and go boating , the reason for the pump being on the log of wood is for lazy people that don't keep there bilge free of leaves and crud.

    2000 Suzuki dt140 trim motor

if the motor is running in both directions then the system is more than likely just low on oil., you may get lucky. if there is plenty of oil a stuck valve or broken seal could be the problem.( i used to send trim units out to have them professionally looked at and repaired , for the cost it was...

Distributor installation – is this right?!

i would not run it like that , reason being is the distributor should drop all the way down without a gasket , so using 2 gaskets means ""as you stated "", something is going to bind up and grind away . the dizzy could have some crud in the oil pump drive area ?? . now that you have started the...
