    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

You should not try turning the inner hex screw. That is a pressure regulator and to adjust it a pressure gauge is needed, the wrong setting will blow up the outer tubes of the rams. You are right about the fitting change. Try connecting the system like I described. If you luck out and find a...

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

It looks like someone replaced the down port fitting with an inverted flare style. Originally it was a compression style for the plastic lines like hanging off the reverse lock valve. If you replace the fittings on the trim indicator cylinder with inverted flare style you will be able to re...

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

The only thing that atf will do is foam. Power steering fluid does not, just try to purge as much of the atf out. Try to post a picture of the bottom of the pump where the hoses connect.

    change steering shaft

The gimbal ring is the thinnest @ the 10 & 2 o’clock area. I used to use a 36” pair of bolt cutters or a reciprocal saw. Then it is easy to pull out the ring after removing the bottom shaft. It is possible to remove the upper mounting hardware without hole sawing the holes but it helps.

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

Try using a little compressed air to move the piston in the trim sender cylinder. It probably still works and should move the trim gauge. If it does just connect it back in the hydraulic system. The drive may stay down at idle in reverse. Finding a good reverse lock valve are pretty slim. In...

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

It looks like the reverse lock valve has been by passed. The incoming line between the trim indicator and the valve uses 1/8” npt male X 1/4” female compression fitting like on the lines hanging off the trim indicator. Originally there was a 1/8” npt male X 1/4” female 90* compression fitting...

    1976 Mecruiser 351W Trim System

If my memory is correct the white plastic low pressure line goes from the pump to one side of the indicator ram cylinder then out to the reverse lock valve where the grey hose goes to the trim block at the bottom of the gimbal housing. There is a bleed screw on the top of the indicator ram...

    Gimbal Ring swap

The gimbal housings are different. They are wider to clear the “ear muffs” mounted on the gimbal ring.

    SX outdrive

There is one thing which happens, the drive shaft may be bound up in the drive coupler. If that is what is wrong then the only way the to remove the drive will be to cut the shaft just behind the engine then the engine needs to come out to replace the coupler. After that then the drive shaft...

Volvo Penta 2.3L AQ131 runs better with timing advanced

One other thing that helps with starting. Take a look at the solenoid and there should be a male spade on the outboard side. If you run a wire from it to the + or bat side of the coil it will provide 12 volts when the starter is engaged. Check it with a test light or a volt meter first to...

Volvo Penta 2.3L AQ131 runs better with timing advanced

If you turn the engine over eventually the marks on the belt will Aline with the marks on the respective sprockets. Quite often whenever I changed a belt when the tensioner was released the belt would jump 1 tooth. It is worth double checking . The electronic ignition conversion kit for your...

Reverse engine lock won't hold on vintage Mercruiser IO 153 cu.in. 120 hp engine

That is probably what is wrong. With the drive lifted about 1/2 way have someone shift the drive into reverse and watch the mechanism. The spring may still be available but to change it takes some work. Upgrading to a later drive platform would be the best way to go. You will need...

Reverse engine lock won't hold on vintage Mercruiser IO 153 cu.in. 120 hp engine

If your boat still has the 1 hydraulic line going to the rams there is no way for the hydraulic system to hold the drive down. The “corkscrew” shaped brass shift lever below the bell housing is supposed to keep the lock mechanism engaged on the setting pin. Is the lever on the side of the...

    Fuel Carburater Question

Was the carburetor a marine version? If it was an automotive type then #1 it is not safe and #2 it is too lean. Marine carburetors are designed so that if it “floods over” the gas stays inside the throttle body and not out and all over the engine which will cause a fire.

    1972 Grew SS245

Obviously the original owner converted to a crankshaft driven raw water pump. The flush cap needs to be left off so that water can circulate through the drive to cool the gear oil. Just change the oil in the lower, you can use automatic transmission fluid as a substitute. Resealing the lower...

    1972 Grew SS245

I had a few customers with the exact boat engine combination. Down here in Louisiana the salt water use took a toll on the engine/drives. However the hulls held up. With fresh water use the the engine /drive is probably still usable. The biggest problem with any drive system is the owner’s...
