    Spare Stern Drive

Tip from a drain plug? That is what it is, remove lower plug when disassembling! Greenhorn moment 🙄 Well that' part is solved, thanks @salvageyard saviour for making me look deeper.

It's magnetic so I'm not sure lol. Picture against prop cotter pin for reference. I used a magnet to retrieve it but can't believe it transferred the magnetism that quickly.
  3. 88 Capri (2022 SOTY)

    Spare Stern Drive

The bearings operate smoothly, the pins appears to be in good shape. I'm wondering if some work was done on it years ago and some shims are missing??? The popping out of gear could be the shift rod adjustment but I never looked into it because it didn't look like you could(I need to print out my...
  4. 88 Capri (2022 SOTY)

    Spare Stern Drive

After further examination I found this in the cutout area in the lower, could it be from the upper or old damage? Everything in there now is intact.

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

Hi all, I posted this on the OMC forum but wanted to add it to my rebuild thread so sorry about duplication 😊. Well.... I disassembled the lower gear case and everything looks good other than it was way past time for seals. I did this because I had horizontal play to an 1/8" maybe 3/16" and the...

    Spare Stern Drive

Well.... I disassembled the lower gear case and everything looks good other than it was way past time for seals. I did this because I had horizontal play to an 1/8" maybe 3/16" and the prop could be rotated a good third of a turn when in gear. I also had it jump out and back into gear once when...
  7. 88 Capri (2022 SOTY)

    Spare Stern Drive

After further consideration I've decided to tear into my drive over the winter and see what is going on. I've never tore into one before and really want to see how it works internally, if I'm lucky it's just a dog clutch in the lower and bearings, seals in all.
  8. 88 Capri (2022 SOTY)

    Spare Stern Drive

I've learned nothing is easy with OMC but when pricing used units and potential parts to rebuild mine it was an interesting option when I ran across this. I'm doing more investigating..... I did come across installation videos.
  9. 88 Capri (2022 SOTY)

    Spare Stern Drive

After all the work I have done and that the boat is perfect for my wife and I, is this a worthwhile investment? Pricing various scenarios if this is a good option it makes sense.

    rebuild kit

Scott, Would a 4.3 fit inside of the doghouse of a 2.3? I'm guessing probably not but I'd figured I ask and maybe help the poster.

    1996 Stingray 556zp - Partial Floor Rot

Hi, From my personal experience and From reading other threads and their responses the floor is the last thing to rot. You had the transom repaired which is great but there is a high likelihood that your stringers have rot in them and most protective motor mounts also. The previous owner of my...

Leak Identification - Transom Plate Seal ?? - 4.3L OMC

If it does come down to the transom being rotten there are plenty of threads on the site and in the stickies that show and explain what you may or may not be confronted with, plus plenty of people here who have plenty of knowledge to share.

Hi Camel, Have you been able to get to your project at all?

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

I totally agree, the strange part is that thinking about upgrades, future repairs and not being consumed on what's broken or having a time-line in your head about the splash!

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

I brought my kayak paddles just in case!

    88 Capri Restoration (Splashed 08/2022)

The splash went better than expected albeit I was really nervous because of all the work done and being my first time working on a boat. It ran very well even with the slight stuttering at idle but never stalled, she planed out quite well and once on plane I had to back off the throttle because...
