    Replacement Cables

Post a pic of what the ends look like. I just bought new cables for my new shifter setup and went with 33C cables, and they are red.

    1996 Stingray 556ZP

Not sure about the broken bolt - looks really rusty. Maybe try soaking in some penetrant and using a broken bolt extractor? If it's really bad, you may have to carefully drill and tap, or do a thread insert. If it's really really bad, replace the manifold. If you're not confident in your own...

    Channel Lock Stuck In Distributor?

My rotor was stuck and I broke it pulling it off. The little tab that aligns the rotor to the shaft also had a piece break off and stick in the shaft. I used a small hammer and flat head screwdriver and tapped on the broken piece of plastic stuck in the shaft and it came right out. My...

    1977 Sunray SV170 Restoration

Agree - build a cradle before cutting any more. Also, I would replace the transom. You're already there.

Bent blade tip - not sure what to do

Thanks for the reply. This is the prop that several of the folks with XLT-185's recommend using, so we will see. I did end up taking it to be fixed.

Bent blade tip - not sure what to do

Thanks Bondo. I dropped it off at a local shop on Friday. There were some other issues like small dings and rolling of the leading edge in a few spots. He said it would be about $180 to have it fixed up completely. Hoping to pick it back up this Friday.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Yeah, I'm hoping so! I was missing pieces to my OEM shifter, and I wanted the bling too. 😂

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I installed my oil filter relocation kit today. At the recommendation of @Reserector_ , I triple checked the routing and made sure the flow was set up correct. I'm pretty disappointed in the customer service from the company that made this kit. They state on their site that this will work...

Shift/throttle cables - difference in lengths?

I didnt think it made sense that they did, but I had seen someone post in a group I follow about my boat that they bought equal length cables. Didnt make sense to me either....why I asked.

Shift/throttle cables - difference in lengths?

I know it's going to vary boat-to-boat, but is it typical for the throttle cable to be about 1 ft longer than the shift cable on a Mercruiser 350? Specifically, mine is a 1987 with a QJ carb and has the controls on the starboard side. Just looking at the routing, I'm assuming they need to be...

    How Fast, Speedo Selection?

    Mine is a 19ft / Mercruiser 5.7 / 260 HP / Alpha One Gen 1 and has an 80mph speedo in it. I'd go with a 60 or 80 for your boat.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I've made little bits of progress this week. I spent an evening getting more dash wiring done. I'm almost done under there. I got a contractor to come put down gravel in the spot I'm going to put my carport to park the boat under. I bought a prop. This has been a tough lesson so far - I...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Thanks Mark! Yeah, it's just a pickup, and I did buy the Mercruiser/Quicksilver brand part. I do still have the old one, but it's a superseded part and the wiring is a tad different. Hopefully staying OEM keeps it alive. Thanks for the heads-up on the remote oil filter - I'll keep an eye on...

Bent blade tip - not sure what to do

I'm new to boating and bought my first boat a year ago and have been working on a full gut and restore. It is a 1987 Power Play XLT-185...an 18.5 ft closed bow sterndrive with a Mercruiser 5.7 / 260 HP and Alpha One Gen 1 outdrive. I purchased a used stainless steel Quicksilver Cleaver 21P /...

1989 Stratos 279v top off restoration

To remove the remaining transom wood you'll need to use a hammer and chisel, pry bars, and a grinder. Avoid using the pry bar to pry with - you could damage the outer fiberglass skin. Just use it like a "long chisel" to hammer in once you open a gap with a regular chisel. The wood will likely...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I carpeted the sides of the cockpit area today. All that's left is the floor, kick panel, and front of the bench seat. I need to pick up more carpet. Also reinstalled the USCG data plate since the carpet is in. I went to install the rest of my remote oil filter kit, and the...
