    Outboard top cylinder getting hot

Signs of bad Head Gasket? Low compression is one, Water the Cylinder is another, When you remove the Head, the gasket itself might reveal the failure, but the Head and Block can sometimes also reveal the leak. You will need to check the Head for Warpage, and should Lap it to ensure a flat...

1989 20 hp Johnson bearing carrier seals

I will assume this non thru Prop Exhaust gearcase. Clearance for a Socket, most likely, and the contact area is Circular, not a Hexagon which could chew up the housing. Years ago they used Screws, not Bolts, but the thread was the same

1989 20 hp Johnson bearing carrier seals

Two seals were the norm, for many years, then someone designed a Double Lip Seal, that way if it fails the Internals become water cooled fast, and don't stand a chance. With 2 seals you might get some time and notice water in the Oil

    Outboard top cylinder getting hot

Welcome to iboats A 30 PSI difference is not Good. Time to remove the Exhaust Cover and look at the Pistons for scoring, and to check for tension on the Rings. BTW, on a 2 Stroke, you don't need to do the WOT thing when doing a Compression Test

Just thought I'd share a nice photo.

I would try to find a Band/Wrap from a 1968 or 69 motor, even a 70 or 71. Mercs look best with Red. I did that back in 1986 with my 84 115, you can still see the Brown on the lower cover

61 Sea King 40 hp need head gasket

There were differences between the Powerheads with Stats and those without. The cooling System on the Stat Engine would send water back to the water pump until it warmed up enough to open the stat. That required extra passages in the Head and the Block, and a Gasket to match. It took some...

61 Sea King 40 hp need head gasket

Built by Gale, a division of OMC, that sometimes had slightly different engine blocks than the Evinrude and Johnson motors of same/similar hp I don't think the Head gasket from the same years of E/J engines will fit, as the E/J had a thermostat, while the Gale Products didn't. Maybe a gasket...

Correcting gear ratio with prop size

Speed over the top of the water will be different the speed over the Bottom, because the water itself is moving. GPS is measuring what speed is over the Bottom In the example below, lets assume the water pressure speedo is accurate Boat speed of 35 mph on a water pressure speedo, going with a 5...

    Merc 650 prop shaft seals

There are tools that can extract Seals in place. They kind of look like a piece of Threaded Pipe, fit over the propshaft and then turned, The Threads bite into the seal and then it can be pulled out. Don't go trying to use a piece of Iron Pipe, as it is too rough inside and will damage the...

    Ignition coil issue - 1974 Evinrude 9.9

If you got a shock, it appears that the coil is functioning, and perhaps there is a Problem with the Plug(cracked Insulator, carbon tracks on insulator)

Correcting gear ratio with prop size

It will report the Speed over the bottom of the river, not the speed in regards to the water, if there any movement of the water. Hence in a current of 5mph, a GPS will report a 10 mph difference in the speed depending which way the boat is going
