    Simple job of removing the powerhead.----Remove horseshoe cowling , 4 screws.-----Remove 6 nuts ( 7/16" wrench) and a few hoses.----Powerhead lifts off.----Will need the gasket and improved cup washer.

    When looking for a used / rebuilt powerhead, make sure it is a SPORT JET unit.----A FORCE outboard powerhead may not be a direct swap.

    As suggested / hinted at in post #3 -----This motor is JUNK as it is.---Cylinder #2 is also scored.------Needs to come apart for complete inspection / overhaul.-----Perhaps a rebuilt powerhead if any shop still does them.

    Hard start but runs great once started

    When pulling plug wires off the change should be the same on both cylinders.----Perhaps change the diaphragm on the fuel pump.-----Cheap fix and easy to do.----I have diaphragms on hand because I do not buy new fuel pumps.

    Best years for 70-75hp Johnson/Evinrude outboards

    The 49 cube 70 ( 60 prop rated ) from 1979 to 1988 would be my choice.----A V-4 model 90 / 115 HP OMC would be a better choice.-----But needs to be cheap for rebuild.----Great , simple , reliable motors once properly rebuilt.-----Any one from 1980 to 1998 model year.

    Can I lubricate the cutlass bearing with something so I quickly test forward and reverse on the trailer

    With the boat in the water there is water under pressure to keep the packing cool.----And a slight drip of water should come through the packing when underway.----Careful if you are going to run with dry packing.

    I can not see or touch your motor.----On this 45 year old motor I would first do a compression test.----Post the actual values here.-----The powerhead is removed as an assembly to change the gasket.----Factory gasket today is improved over the original one.

    Remove water cover that fits over the block.-----Inspect water cover and block.-----Clean gasket surfaces.----Install new gasket with a LIGHT coat of sealer.-----About 80 INCH LBS on the screws.
