    In the owners manual for my dad's 92 15 hp that is called a throttle lock. It locks the throttle in place for trolling speeds.

    The knob the red button sticks out of can be turned. It is a throttle lock for trolling, if it is turned it will keep the idle high or low.

    It is because the newer block is a much more forgiving on setting the low speed. The 78 should pretty much be a set it and forget it. If you have to keep adjusting it you either have something wrong or just can't keep your hands off the adjustment.

    I always get a laugh out of people saying 2 strks only want to run wide open. It is like people think, that a 2 strk outboards which were around a 100 yrs before 4 strks became mainstream can't run slow. I don't know if they think people did not troll before 4 strks came out or just weren't...

    Set the points to .020 you will be fine. 1.5 turns open on the carb will get you started. Fine tune on the lake when warm.

    I don't seem to remember channel cats living in salt water. I also don't recall the Mississippi being salty. Are you sure it's not calcium build up.
