Confused with 5.7L Timing Cover Replacement

Yes, and yes And you should replace the oil pan gasket. It has now been compromised by removing the timing cover and will most likely not resolve your oil leak. The issue is on GM small blocks you must use RTV or similar in the corners of the oil pan gasket. Seeing as how there was a leak...

Broken engine to outdrive - what am I looking at?

You need a new gimbal housing. Haven't been any new ones manufactured in 30 years. Could find a donor boat or luck out and someone somewhere has one, ebay? At this point seeing as how you have to pull the motor and transom assy maybe just go with a mercruiser package, still plenty of parts and...

Mercruiser 3.0 base timing a myth?

How do you know it isn't in base mode? Module will still advance timing in base mode, just won't push it up all the way

Missing 3.7L Alpha One Gen 1 Water Shutter Valve

When you split the drive did you remove the drive from the bellhousing and split, or leave the upper attached and just drop the gear case? Asking because the shutter/flapper could be stuck in the exhaust bellows or the exhaust passage between the bell housing and upper portion of the drive

Engine cranking with ignition switch off

You have a short to positive somewhere between the switch and the slave solenoid. You need to isolate every section of the yel/red wire between the two. Start on one end and work your way to the other. The starting troubleshooting guide in the stickies will help you immensely

Engine cranking with ignition switch off

No. The yel/red wire comes from the key switch then goes to the neutral safety switch in the remote (on sterndrive applications). The kill switch/man overboard/lanyard switch is in line with the purple (igniton) wire

    1993 larson 4.3 coil

Possible the coil is the culprit for a sputtering engine. Not highly likely though. There are many other parts that fail long before a coil causes issues

    Mystery diode on alternator

If it wasn't attached to anything on the other end then no worries, probably a remnant of what I could only guess was an isolater. By the looks of the ring terminal it appears 1/4" and would have been on the output terminal/stud. If they are/were attached trace the wire and you'll find the system.

5.0 GXI fault code SPN: 701 FMI 3

Google search came back as digital output circuit high or shorted. If the engine is equipped with the hvs igniton (flat GM distributor cap) the only thing I can think is the sensor in the distributor is having an issue? Check the harness connection to it, if it's good try running the engine...

2004 Merc TKS intermittently missing, running rich, running on.

Those carburetors can be rebuilt for far less than $1000 Good idea to check fuel pump pressure

    1993 larson 4.3 coil

No idea what the ohms spec is but based on the vintage and is a 4.3 if everything is stock mercruiser for the ignition system it's most likely a thunderbolt. Only one style coil available for that system Out of curiosity why is the coil being replaced?

    Mystery diode on alternator

It's possible someone ran an isolater at one time and it's now abated. Could have been part of that system. Were they on the output stud? If you can, post a pic with the leads as you found them

1999 Mercruiser 7.4 (454) MPI Engine overheated today...

Remove the hoses and dig them out with a pick tool. Might need a flashlight and mirror. Or just remove the cooler and clean on a bench. If you do find pieces/debris in the cooler it's a good idea to backflush the hoses leading to it

5.7L 1984, Rough idle at start up, then ok after a minute or so

Go to your local mercury/mercruiser dealer, they will have the correct one. Its a quicksilver brand product, comes in a black, blue and gray box with instructions and additional wiring to connect to older style igniton modules

Not worth it, go oem for bellows, impellers and electrical components

4.3L MPI 2007 Searay Sport 185. Single Alarm at 20 RPMs and higher

Find a new mechanic. With the alarm going off that means there is an active fault and should be present with a scan tool. Either he doesn't know how to use the scanner or it's not the proper scan tool. One time I had a mercruiser that would randomly shut off, then beep. No active faults when it...

No. If one belt is bad, replace them all. Need some wrenches and a pry bar to complete the job

    Mercruiser-compatible 10 micron water/fuel separator filter?

A Sierra brand found on this website will work but oem (like what you have on it now) is best. Good idea to replace the spin on water sep fuel filter every season

    Gimbal bearing.

You can remove the fitting without the special tool, it's just a socket that has four tabs on the O.D. to engage the splined portion of the insert. By the looks of the corrosion and buildup of crud even if you had the special tool most likely you'd be replacing the insert. Kinda funny how you...
