wont shift out of reverse mystery issue

Yeah, "fooling around" with that adjustment rather than doing it properly always ends up as a game of whack a mole: you get one thing working and it screws up something else. If it doesn't work it means you have something worn/broken elsewhere in the system.

Is it worth it to replace the voltage regulator?

Took the boat out for the first time this season, went about 50 miles. On the way out my voltage spiked to 18v for a minute before settling to 14.2. after a while it dropped to battery voltage (12.7) before getting back to 14.2. on the way home it charged for a while before again dropping to...

1984 470 initial carb set up to get idle

The idle setting doesn't have anything to do with starting, the throttle is open and off the idle stop. When you pump the throttle that should set the choke. Confirm that the butterflies are closed. Then as dubs said crank the engine with the throttle open about ⅓ and it should start. Get the...

470 4 barrel conversion, one cylinder missing

Exactly. My point being that "running on 3 cylinders" might not be the same 1 cylinder not firing, tough to tell without actually testing

470 4 barrel conversion, one cylinder missing

Unless it isn't actually running on 3 cylinders (or misfiring on the same cylinder). A fuel related problem can make the engine run like crap and sound like it's missing.

470 4 barrel conversion, one cylinder missing

I think it's usually easier to rule out ignition problems first, even though they're less likely. When it's misbehaving throw a timing light on each lead. Not 100% but it will point you in the right direction. Also, hi @Eric 3.7LX Alpha 1! Haven't seen you around in a while!

    How many boats is enough?

I bought another sunfish last fall. It's been sitting on the side of the house unnoticed until my idiot neighbor asked her about it. Same idiot neighbor that asked about our "new boat" last year--the junk hull I used for my motor swap that she didn't know about.

    How many boats is enough?

Whenever you run out of time/space/money. My wife says we have too many boats, but I classify the kayaks as water toys and not boats. I'm losing the battle over the sunfish though "it's a SAILBOAT! It literally has BOAT in the name!"

Longshot help for friend, '98 EFI fuel check valve?

Turns out that the part in question was the anti siphon valve. Which is clearly a separate issue from the starting. The fuel pump sounds like a likely suspect for that...

Longshot help for friend, '98 EFI fuel check valve?

Yes... I would have advised against this boat for a number of reasons. Do you have a parts diagram showing the valve, or is it integral to the pump?

Longshot help for friend, '98 EFI fuel check valve?

Long shot here, but I have an...over excited... friend who bought a '98 Regal with a "new" engine that ran in the driveway. It is apparently missing a "fuel pressure check valve" because the guy that replaced the engine forgot to put it in and is an "easy fix". The boat is not nearby so I can't...

    Wiring help/Electronic gauge

Had high hopes for this. After hooking up and then trying to figure out why the engine wouldn't start (gee, maybe it's that new electrical connection, dumbass), it looks like the gauge somehow grounds out this wire. Wish I had a DSO to figure out what's going on, but was getting about 2.5v off...

Help Diagnosing carb vs ignition problem, 5.7 mercruiser

How about you confirm that it's an ignition problem? When it doesn't start throw a timing light on a lead or use a spark plug tester and see.

    Wiring help/Electronic gauge

TL;DR Could I splice the gauge input into the grn/wht wire from my TB IV module? @achris ? Long version: OK, so I contacted the gauge seller, who told me that the gauge won't accept a coil neg input. He said it would take the input from a regular magnetic 2 wire sensor, which he offered to send...

    87’ invader mercruiser help me ! 👸

I'll disagree with you on this one. I still haven't noticed a *huge* increase in power, although the v6 is much smoother and the power is effortless mid-range, I'm not usually looking to accelerate quickly from 25-40 knots. I want it down low, and I think the 200# weight penalty of the v6 hurts...

    87’ invader mercruiser help me ! 👸

Ok. You won't gain much in power with the swap. In fact, depending on how that v6 is set up you might lose power. Also it sounds like a) you'd be in over your head and b) you don't have anyone who knows wtf they're doing. You would need a *complete* v6 with all the accessories. You would need to...
