    What is engine model number? A lot of Johnson outboard motors go into SLOW mode when they overheat. They often have a horn that signals overheat.

    Take the hydraulic lines off the pump. The hydraulic ports on the cylinders strip real easy. The lines are full of oil. The pump will not leak much, just the oil on the outside part of the control valve. A fraction of an oz.

    Move the throttle and see what attachment point moves in the right direction. Mercury OBs push the throttle closed. J/E OBs push the throttle open. Not sure about Yammies. Also, I have a similar (identical) control for 1998, so you may be able to get some info on the control from the OEM.
