The pump is a hydraulic pump and can be mounted anywhere you want to place it, so long as its not upside down or side ways :D

Mercruiser Alpha 1 G2 Trim (probably dumb questions!)

Could be a pump problem but I would look at the cylinders first because Like most, folks raise the drive till it stops. If folks would bump the down after it stopped going up, this would release the pressure and ease the seals Pressure is higher going up and less for going down

Pay to have it removed, I did Paid to have mine removed down to the gel. Some spots it was removed to the glass. I then painted 4 coats of Interlux Performance VC which is epoxy. You could use stripper but it will take a few coats and probably still need to sand

    Ease of towing larger boat

That's rolling the dice. What will make it thru the Gel, its just a matter of when. Some boat manufacturers apply Gel better then others, and how well they do then will depend how long it will take.

    Ease of towing larger boat

Agree with caveat With boat in the water you need to paint the boat. Every few years need to repaint. OR get a boat lift And many slips have electric meters and the owner of the dock can change more then what they are being charged. I got tired of repainting the boat, so I now have a lift
