    All shifting is done in the top half, its just gears in the lower. Check to see if its in throttle only. Otherwise I would pull the rear cap off to see if the shift mech is moving when shifted

    The ALT should have 4 connections Ground - Black Output - Orange Sense - Red/purple from 50 amp breaker Excite - Purple from key This is a 3.0 using EST distributor but other then that the wiring will be the same

    If you go ABYC then use 3 pole key switch (Bat, Run, Start) In drawing above it shows Acc going to 2 gauges and the ALT. These should go to the run circuit even if you rewire with 4 pole key.

    Your right and looking at Merc manual 16, 23 and 37 (dry joint) the riser should be part of the raw water cooled side. Only the mans should be part of the closed cool Edit: but I would still stick with the old style unless someone can show how the new would work better

    A s JA mentioned a sterndrive does not have a tranny as an inboard would. Yes the drive has to come off before engine removal. Takes 20 minutes. Being a 4.3 it should have a Alpha drive. The throttle handle gets placed in full forward before drive is removed.

    I would use the first type riser (old style) because the newer style may create a slight restriction. Any change in flow may cause the need to change other things Agree with flow diagram to make the riser part of the closed system
