    Those Martin motors were actually very good runners.---Well built smooth and quiet.----But they fell by the wayside as they were expensive.----No separate tank or gear shift.

    The steering on a 1974 model Evinrude hooks up to the tilt tube.--------There should be no need for that adapter bracket,-------That bracket was used for Evinrude motors 1972 and older !

    The 90 degree looper 140 HP V-4 was last marketed in 1994.----So a model # should be posted.----Not every motor starts like a modern car.-----So explaining how you try and start this motor helps.----Are you pushing the key in and holding it in while cranking it over ?

    They are NOT cold engines at all.-------They start easy hot or cold !-----I would have your battery load tested ( even if new )-----And I would take the starter apart ( very easy ) for inspection and ohm check on armature.----Should read infinity on a digital meter.

    Make sure there is no water in the gearcase oil.----Make sure gearcase cavity drain holes are clear and draining after use.----Rotate engine 1 or 2 turns to drain water pump.

    I have seen corrosion damage on 4 stroke motors.-----But I politely ask for a test report after a 20 minute run at full throttle of the subject motor !!

    The neutral safety switch has to do with the starter motor.----Not spark.----If motor is in gear it should not crank over.-----A primer bulb easily gets rid of air.------If primer bulb does not go hard it could mean a ruptured diaphragm in the fuel pump.
