    Well-----I think it is the gear shift cable / linkages on the motor that need adjusting.-------So disconnect shift cable at the motor.-----Operate the control box as a test.----Does it still make the noise ??

    First thing I do after tightening the crankcase screws is turn the crankshaft to check for binding.-----When you work carefully and with experience there are no surprises !

    Look for issues with water leaking into one of the cylinders.-----Have you changed out the water pump impeller recently ?-------Checked fuel pump diaphragm and the check valves in the fuel pump ?

    Those are the best motors to own.----Parts new and used are everywhere.----Your location ?-----It should be an easy fix.-----And no point talking to a big shop as they are not interested in small jobs.-----They get plenty of work / revenue from $50,000 boats and big spending owners.

    From about 78 to 92 they are essentially the same !!-----Same crankshaft from 74 to 2007 I believe.-------A 74 lower unit fits on a 2007 model, not the same internally but will bolt on.-----Same water pump kit from 74 to 2007 models.

    The newer integrated system will likely not fit on 77 and older models.----Unless you change a lot of parts !!!!----Like transom brackets and swivel bracket.

    Well----1973 V-4 powerheads were a ---" one off year "----Not so much the 77 models.----They did make midsection changes in the 77 / 78 model years .----And they started offering the 25" extra long shaft models.-----Crankshaft center bearing was beefed up in the 79 V-4 models.

    Why ----They had to quickly come up with a system since trim / tilt suddenly became a big seller.-----Then they redesigned it to hide it in between transom brackets.-----Nothing to it and not a mystery at all.

    Some of the early ones came from factory with trim / tilt.------The early integral systems came with a 3 wire motor and later ones were a 2 wire motor.

    Something is wrong.----You did fit the center bearing on the dowel ?----And the upper bearing pin in the recess in the block.-----Best to take it apart again before you do $$$$ damage.
