1964 Evinrude Lark - Runs, but lousy

Well, I finally got this 40hp Lark out and running today, well sort of. It started very hard and won't idle worth a darn. I've replaced everything under the flywheel, and rebuilt the carb. I finally got it to keep running, but with a terrible lean sneeze. No matter where I set the low speed...

What Is It? From 1964 Lark 40hp

Hopefully this will be my last question on this motor. When I got the motor, the transom clamp was not attached to the motor. As I was re-installing the clamp assembly, this spring fell out from somewhere. Any idea what it is and where it goes? It is painted blue so it must be an external part.

1964 Lark holes below exhaust relief

1964 Lark with Selectric shift. There are two small holes below the exhaust relief port, about 1/4 inch diameter, in a vertical configuration. What are they for, and why has someone closed them off with silicone caulk?

    Goodyear Evinrude Sportwin?

I'm fixing up an outboard for a friend. The cowl is an Evinrude Sportwin 10hp, and the welsh plug lists the model number as 10012, which would be 1956. However, the plate on the transom mount says "Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company" Model 2253609. Anyway, I'm looking for a lower unit seal kit and...

1964 Lark 6? Model number question

This 1964 Evinrude I've been working on has a Lark 6 Cowl on it. However, the powerhead, lower cowl and leg are all painted Polychromatic blue, and it looks original. Lark should be gray. The generator looks like it has been added, as the mounting bracket is white. The model number and serial...

1964 Lark 6 Safety Switch question.

Got the wiring all figured out on the Lark, and have a question on the Safety Switch. From the looks of the wiring, it appears the safety switch functions in the same way as the old mercury switch? If the throttle advances too far, it grounds the solenoid preventing the starter from turning. Is...

    1964 Lark 6 Choke Questions

Well, I bought a '64 Lark 6 and been tearing into it. Question on the "hot air" choke. Does thist type choke require a choke switch on the dash? The wiring diagram shows a choke switch with a red wire from the accessory terminal on the key switch, and a red/white stripe wire going to the choke...

    Evinrude Lark 6 Generator Question

I'm looking at buying a 40hp Lark 6 and it has a "charging device" - is it a generator like on the older models or had they gone to alternators at that point? I assume it is not needed for the engine to run? I would prefer to just remove it. Any problems with that?

1961 Merc 400 Lower Unit Questions

Well, I got the lower unit off the motor and replaced the impeller. What a challenge getting that key back in place:eek:. Anyway, when looking down from the top, should the shift shaft be turned all the way counterclockwise to put the unit in forward gear? It seems that no matter where I...

1961 Merc 400 Impeller Change Challenges?

So I got the tool to remove the water pump cover, and am ready to attempt the impeller change. Any tips, tricks, secrets I should know about when attempting to remove the lower unit? Apparently there is no shift rod to disconnect on a merc like on a Johnnyrude. So is it just a matter of removing...

    More problems - Merc 400

One problem after another working on this motor:(. I'm trying to pull the flywheel to replace the timing belt. I have a fairly expensive harmonic balance puller that came with a variety of hardened bolts. NONE of them will fit the threads on the flywheel. I tried numerous bolts I had in the shop...

    1955 Brooklure Fuel Pump

Well, got this old Brooklure 500 (5hp) Up and running and she runs great for a 55 year old motor. This motor has a built in fuel tank, but it also has a fuel pump so you can use it with an external tank. The fuel pump was disconnected when I bought the motor. So anyway, some questions: 1. The...

    Merc 400 Fuel Lines

I'm replacing the fuel lines on a 1961 Merc 400 45hp. Got the original lines with the brass ends. I'm wondering if the screw threaded connections which go into the carbs should have any kind of sealant. The parts list doesn't show any o-rings, but seems like there should be something on those...

    Recoil Starter Problems

I just picked up a 1955 Brooklure 500 5hp which is basically the same as a Johnson 5.5hp. I'm having problems with the recoil. The pawls do not pop out when you pull the rope. I have compared it to a recoil from a 1956 30hp and the mechanism is basically identical. When you pull the rope on the...

    1961 Merc 400 - Changing impeller

Looks like a special tool is needed to get to the water pump impeller. Can this cover be removed in any other way? I've looked on Ebay for the tool and have had no luck. Anyone know where to find one? Also looks like a similar tool is needed to remove the prop shaft cover. Are they the same tool?

    '56 Johnson 15hp waterpump/driveshaft mystery

I was working on this '56 15hp Johnny for a neighbor. Needed new impeller and prop shaft/shift shaft seals. Took it apart, replaced the seals, had to remove the skeg to get to the shift shaft seal. Inspected all the gears. Put it back together and the Driveshaft was riding too low in the lower...

Merc 400 45hp - spark plug wire removal

I got my factory service manual which covers my 1961 4 cylinder merc 400. I looked in it to find out how to remove the spark plug wires from the distributor cap - it gave three methods: 1. Screw in and out 2. Pull out 3. Held in by screws. Anyone know which is the method of attachment on this...

Lubriplate 105 in geacase? 35hp Lark

Last winter, I replaced all the seals in my 1957 35hp Lark. Pressure tested OK. Filled it up with gear oil and put it in the water in the Spring. Just pulled it out of the water, and drained the L/U. Oil was real milky! Pressure tested it again for 3 hours and it held 12psi. I turned the drive...
