Is There a Repair Kit for Corrosion on the Gymbal Housing?

To get better access to the gimbal housing in order to to repair it, I'm removing the pivot housing. To do that, I have disconnected the water hose from the back and taken the plastic nut off the front. Should the plastic threaded piece just push back out of the back of the housing? Maybe I...

Is There a Repair Kit for Corrosion on the Gymbal Housing?

That link took me to what looks like a complete Pivot Housing, not the gimbal housing and not a repair kit. The gimbal housing has the "pipe" that the forward end of the U-Joint bellows attaches to but you know that. Attached is a picture showing the corrosion. I did find a repair kit. it's...

Is There a Repair Kit for Corrosion on the Gymbal Housing?

Is there a repair kit for corrosion in the gimbal housing? I have some corrosion on the Gimbal Housing where the U-Joint Bellows attaches. In order to get a water tight seal I will need to repair it. Have any of you done that repair?

Can I Tell if Water is Getting into the U-Joint Bellows?

I'm not sure how the hole got in the U-Joint bellows. It might have been the clip to hold the ground wire on the hose clamp somehow got pinched in there. I don't believe I over tightened the hose clamp. I also smooth out the mating surface with a Scotch Brite pad before putting on the bellows...

Can I Tell if Water is Getting into the U-Joint Bellows?

Can I Tell if Water is Getting into the U-Joint Bellows without taking the OD off? I have to replace the gimbal bearing due to water getting into the U-Joint Bellows. I may also have to replace the U-Joints as well. That was caused by a clip from a grounding strap getting loose and wearing a...

Did Water Get Into My Gear OIL?

I know water got into the U-Joint Bellows. I have taken the OD off and can see the rust on: The gimbal bearing and on the U-Joints. The question is: Did water get past the seal in the bearing carrier and into the gear oil? I drained the oil and it is blueish-green. See the pictures below. What...

Changing the U-Joint on an OMC Cobra Out Drive, OD

I have not decided whether to change the U-Joints. Here are the reasons To change them: 1) Water got into the U-Joint bellows and put water on the U-Joints. 2) The boat is primarily used in salt water. 3) My U-Joints DO have Zerk fittings and while that does make lubing them possible, it can...

Changing the U-Joint on an OMC Cobra Out Drive, OD

Nevermind. I went to the local Volvo - Penta dealer and got the Bellows, Bearing, and gaskets. Next, I will have the bearing installed by a mobile mechanic. Then I will adjust the shift cable if needed. But I may not not need to since I did not disturb anything. I did remove the shift lever in...

Changing the U-Joint on an OMC Cobra Out Drive, OD

You recommend only using an OEM U-Joint Bellows. Can I get one online? What source do you trust for OEM parts?

Changing the U-Joint on an OMC Cobra Out Drive, OD

Lou, At first I assumed the same as you "The bearing carrier pushes into the aft end of the bellows and that has to seal." But why? The inside of the bellows should be dry and the exterior of the Bearing carrier should also be dry. What am I missing? I understand that it "looks" like it seals...

Changing the U-Joint on an OMC Cobra Out Drive, OD

If I drain the oil out of the bottom of the OD and do not see any evidence of water, can I conclude that the Input Shaft seal is intact? New question: Does the seal between the aft end of the bellows and the Bearing Carrier (Item #28) need to be a perfect water-tight seal? It seems to me that...

Removing OD Out Drive - It is Stuck

I found a hole in the bellows at the 11 O-clock position where a clip for an anode ground strap should have clipped into the hose clamp. It looks like it made a hole in the bellows.

Is there a way to check for a leak between Transom and OD?

Thank you Lou. Re a leak going into the shifter recess and not the bellows, thanks I did not know that. I found a hole in the bellows at the 11 O-clock position where a clip for an anode ground strap should have clipped into the hose clamp. It looks like it made a hole in the bellows and caused...

Removing OD Out Drive - It is Stuck

I have not figured that out yet. It sure would be nice if they included a drain plug with a good seal that you could remove and see if water was getting in. Then I would have known and avoided this repair. If it was the boot. I guess I should have been inspecting it. I will post later after I...

Is there a way to check for a leak between Transom and OD?

I just pulled my OD, an OMC Cobra. I have a leak and a vibration. Water was getting into the U-Joint bellows. That caused rust on the U-Joint and damage to the U-Joint bearing. (there is another post about that called XXX.) I thought that I was careful to prep the surfaces well last time. I...
