With how close you spaced them I think you should be good.

Suggestion: When you install that deck lay down a bead of PL on your alum angle and space your rivets in the 6 inchish range. That should make it that much stronger eh.

Re: 14' Sea Nymph Oh Yeah! Now 1971 LUND 14-S

Hey gang just need some opinions.

I'm going back and forth between using Behr deckover like what Jas is using in his bowlander, or oil based rusto for my interior.

If I use spar urethane to coat/seal my deck instead of epoxy I'll need to sand, prime with acrylic, then topcoat with deckover (also acrylic) I'm a tad nervous using acrylic over oil based...

I'm thinking it may be simpler to use oil based primer and paint. If I use oil based paints I don't really want to use sand for texture. Anyone use a less gritty alternative than sand?

Also regarding painting the interior aluminum of my boat. The sea-foam green paint that I believe is original seems to have held up very well. The areas that are bare metal from foot traffic or scrapes, I plan to use etching primer first to cover bare metal areas. Should I then primer over the top of all the original sea-foam green paint? Or should I be able to scuff it up and topcoat over it?

Thanks in advance for any input...

Scuff it up & prime it all. Evens out background for top coat......

If you use Rusto' and roll it with a heavy nap roller you'll get a pretty nice texture to it just by itself. Try it on some cardboard and see what happens.:D

Hey Mike!

Thanks for stopping by!

I've been reading "paint your boat for under $100"

I'm going to roll n' roll on the sides of my hull and leave the bottom bare aluminum. Do I still use this formula with a reducer using this technique? I thought reducers were only used when spraying..

Mixing Formula for Final Color Coats

2 cups Paint
1/4 cup of Majic Reducer
1 oz of Hardener (1/8 cup/2Tablespoons)(Sold @ Tractor Supply Stores)
Mix Paint, Reducer and Hardener and let "Cook" For 30 mins. Re-Stir every 10 mins.

Thanks!

Hey gang,

I decided to use the lower extension of all the gussets and attach another piece of angle to form C channel. It seems very strong now... Also added the hatch cross braces. I'll cut and hopefully start sealing the decks this weekend.

I think this is the last of my deck framing pictures for now.:spider:

Here are a couple of anti-skid options for use with oil based paints and the roll-n-roll method. I didn't use these, so can't speak from experience, but they are designed for use in oil based paints. I had the interior of my boat sandblasted to remove old paint. That ended up leaving me with a sandpaper finish, and I just painted it like that. Soda blasting would have been smooth I think, but sand blasting roughened it up.

Shop Rust-Oleum Professional 8 Oz. Professional Anti-Skid Additive at Lowes.com

I roll-n-rolled my Lonestar using Wood's method. Came out real nice.

Most aluminum boats are fairly substantial, but I'd probably choose another method over sandblasting, or at least not with actual sand-like silica media. Soda, dry ice & walnut shells are all pretty good alternates.

In the wrong hands, sandblasting can be bad news on an aluminum boat, esp the ones w/ thin hulls....

Looking great Bear. Like the hatch & framing so far.

Oh come on man, the zen like experience of paint removal is like none other. Your trying to cheat the tin gods by having someone else remove that nasty gunk, it't just a little tinny and one coat too!

Happy weekend!

So reading WOG's paint boat for $100 bones... Do I need reducer for roll 'n roll? I thought that was used for spraying with a gun... Also does it matter what type of rusto paint I buy? Marine topside, Pro, or is plaint exterior oil base okay?

This is his formula for topside... I'm not finding anything that states reucer not needed when rolling paint.

Mixing Formula for Final Color Coats

2 cups Paint
1/4 cup of Majic Reducer
1 oz of Hardener (1/8 cup/2Tablespoons)(Sold @ Tractor Supply Stores)
Mix Paint, Reducer and Hardener and let "Cook" For 30 mins. Re-Stir every 10 mins.

I think it does need thinning for roll and roll ,though maybe not as much ..

Went back on my thread and it was 2 cups paint ,1/4 cup acetone , 1 oz hardener.
That was when I rolled the H/T . I would think it would be the same using the reducer instead of acetone ..

Really, I don't think you can actually go wrong for our purposes. I think any of those ^^^ would be AOK for your application buddy.

Re: 14' Sea Nymph Oh Yeah! Now 1971 LUND 14-S

Thanks for the paint tips SP and Jas... The hardware store I was at today had a lame paint stock so I'm going to a big name tomorrow or sometime this week paint. I did however pickup Spar urethane, and think a quart should seal both sides of my plywood...

Today I managed to get both casting and trolling motor decks cut. I'm happy with how the 1/2" plywood feels and that I added the extra frame supports! I think when the deck is riveted to the frame it's gonna be just fine. I like the fact it's still going to me very manageable by myself. There's a small inlet to a lake blocked by a beaver dam where I fish in Mercer WI.. If the water is low sometimes I'll need to get out of the boat and help it over some logs...

The Trolling motor deck is still in mock-up mode... I've mounted 4 1/8" x 9" angle supports to existing rivet holes that attach the gunnel rail to the skin with nuts and bolts temporarily. The supports will be riveted at final assembly. I'll add an 1/8" piece of angle that ties port and starboard supports together essentially making a triangle frame under the TM deck.

My plan is to build a bulkhead between the casting and trolling motor decks. I'll install a hatch for access to my anchor, ropes, or any additional storage I can get.

I'm diggin it!

Sorry, It took a while to get back atcha. Yep you should use the reducer but, only 1/4 cup. You can also use Acetone, but in Hotter temps use Mineral Spirits. I really think the key is using two rollers. One to put the paint on and then the other that has all the paint squeezed out of it but still damp to lightly do the final roll out to flatten the bubbles and make it smooth. It take a bit of practice but once you get it you can get "Spray Like" results. A lot of the guys have. PM me if you need or want to discuss in more detail. I'll send you my contact info if you want to call and discuss.

Looking great Bear! Hey a suggestion since I don't see it in the pic with the TM platform. The span across the back edge of the TM deck should have some angle across it for support.

Thank man!

Yes my brutha I tried to explain that being added along with the bulkhead above the picture... Sometimes it's hard reading everyone's text... We love the pics so much!

Thanks Mike!

I'll shoot you a PM to go over it before I paint the exterior... It would be great talking real time! Have a great day!
