Although it may fill the area w/ battery & you had plans for other stuff down there, if you really want the weight that far forward, I'd consider at the keel, where this hatch cover sits:

Back against the front of the bench. Lowers the weigh as much as possible, and does move it back a little.

You & Bear solo most of the time? A bit of forward weight wouldn't be bad to off set you, the OB & the fuel.......

Thanks JB,

Me and Bear... That's funny brutha... Ya mean me and Jackson... ;)

I was thinking the weight lower in the hull is better, and had also given thought to a battery tray just in front of that bench. I could stash my anchor and rope on the step instead. The step just fit the battery so perfectly...

It's really generous that they let us feed, water & shelter them, let them out to do their business, pick it up occasionally, play {insert your's favorite dog exercise play activity} with them & even share the couch/bed every now & again :watermelon:

If dogma is real, I want to come back & be a dog in my family. They's gots it pretty goods around these parts.....

Hey Bear...I think either place would be good for battery storage and make wiring easy. It's fun to plan out how your going to balance your boat. Just make sure you keep Jackson on the stern when you are on the casting deck and I think you'll be good to go

Must have deleted all the pictures I took when I did my Lund S-14 DLX . It is a bit different than the S14 in that it has a split middle seat and a flat deck between the rear seat and the front full seat.

The front bow seat/step is not level and is lower than the full bench seat. So what I did was bend up some 5" wide Stainless sheet into an L and made 3 pcs. 1 was fastened to the front bench about 2" lower than the top of the seat. Then I added 2 of these from where the bow seat mounts on each side and brought them back to the angle that I mounted on the full front seat. I then mounted a piece of aluminum piano hinge under the bow seat/step. I then fit a piece of 5/8" ply to fit between the 2 seats.

Worked out very well as the whole deck would lift with the hinge. Also lowered the deck just that slight amount and made the boat more stable when I was up there. I also had the fuel tank under that deck which helped distribute the weight better with the 35hp Evinrude which is Max for the DLX. Left lots of storage under that deck too.

Boy I missed that boat last summer.

Bonz,

Thanks for the tips. I'll be doing something similar to that... I should be picking up my aluminum for supports, framing, gussets, etc very soon. Still in the design thinking, drink coffee and beer phase...

Do you feel a group 27 battery on the small step is okay? Center of gravity to high? Will it make the boat handle weird?

In regards to painting the sides of the hull... I'm going with Rust-Oleum and added hardener (roll-roll). I'm thinking instead of stripping 100% of the existing red paint off, just light sanding for primer to grip, priming over red, then top coat over with Rust-oleum?

Oh come on now, stripping paint is so much fun! Then you could decide if you wanted to make her into a gleaming naked lady.

I think if you mounted the battery there it wouldn't cause any stability issues. Would also help with forward weight when alone at the tiller.

Hey gang,

Update for today,

I purchased some 1-1/4" x 1/8" angle to fabricate a Z bar riser support for the front of my casting deck. First time I've ever riveted! It's awesome! I used my new pneumatic rivet gun and 3/16" closed end blind rivets. This Z bar is a general mock-up and has not been mounted permanently in position. I've also decided to put the battery under the casting deck, and use the step area for rope and anchor storage. It's gonna basically be a compartment under the trolling motor mount not yet shown..

All the red lines represent 1" x 1/16" angle used to support the deck and reinforce the hatch opening. All the angle framework will be riveted to the bench and bow support using gusset plates. The blue represents the hatch opening.

I also made my casting deck template. Tomorrow I'll make the trolling motor deck template.

You are getting right after it Bear, excellent:thumb:

First time I've ever riveted! It's awesome!

We ought to have a poster made of you riveting some alum together and have it hung at the "Glasser Guy Boat Builder Anonymous" meetings. It could say something like "THIS COULD BE YOU!!!":becky:

All the red lines represent 1" x 1/16" angle used to support the deck and reinforce the hatch opening.

For the hatch opening, no sweat - but - I'm wondering if you'll want something a little thicker than 1/16" for deck support maybe? Eh?

Looks like a good plan to me and I like your racy red riveter too! You could have a I beam, or brace to the bottom in order to stiffen up the frame work if there's too much give.

Hey gang,

I'm thinkin the 1/2" plywood deck riveted to all this frame work should be strong enough.. If not I can rebuild... After all this is only my first experience with this erector set bliss stuff! :)

I've mounted 1/16" x 1-1/2" angle using 1/16" x 2" x 6" long gussets attached to my bow Z riser and the bench seat face. Not all rivets have been set as I'm still in mock-up with the hatch but It gives you an idea of my deck layout...

Looks good to me! I think you are going to like keeping that deck low, for stability purposes. I like that hatch in the middle too. Erector sets are fun right?!

You could have it built and done in no time, better slow down and let the water loose it's stiffness. Looks good to me, the 1/16th could be on the weak side for me being 6'04" and 260. If you get some flex, an I beam type support underneath would work to add support

Re: 14' Sea Nymph Oh Yeah! Now 1971 LUND 14-S

Hey gang,

Over much contemplation today regarding support angle thickness, I've decided I'm sticking with the 1/16" angle for now. I have a few ideas to reinforce what I've constructed, and accept it may need to be totally rebuilt with 1/8" material...

It's all in the name of science right?

I attempted to complete the deck frame and ran out of aluminum plate used for my for gussets. The cross members in the hatch frame still need to be attached.

I placed the old 1/2" plywood seat top across the supports and stood on it. Now I wouldn't promote an MMA event on the deck, but I think once it's secured to the fame, it should safely support myself and Jackson fishing.... Between the two bulkheads in the former bench seat supports, and the 1/8" Z frame mounted to the small bow step, it all seems very capable of supporting my weight (225 lbs).... It feels as sturdy/strong as the boats overall construction feels if that makes any sense?????
