bomb diggity!!! Thats one HOT boat!
You did a great job, and orange peel cant be seen as the hull cuts a wave of water rising then falling in a cresciendo that is sweet music to your ears as you orchestrate your swift yet gracefull turns across the once glassy water

Thanks Jim.
Floyd I thinned it 10%. I read that it seems to lay better with less thinner. This is my first time too so I am no expert. I will tell you that you will like the HVLP sprayer. I can definately see where you get less overspray. You will notice I don't have close up pics, thats because I have a little orange peel but what the heck, it's a boat.:D
I am hoping I can buff that little bit out but if not I won't lose sleep.

Thanks. I can't wait to break out the gun and start spraying paint.

Jim, I used Interlux. I painted ( rolled) on the Pre Kote and then sprayed the Interlux Brightside. I does take at least two coats and takes a few days to harden (somewhat) but I like it. I just hope it holds up well. You can rol & tip this stuff too!

Don't worry about the orange peel, even the best painters get that. Brightside is thick enough at a 10% thin to wet sand later. Let it dry for a good 2 weeks or even a month before you try to sand it. It cures from the inside out after the skin is formed but once it's fully cured it's a tough finish.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

I went to check out that other "dealboat" last night. 140 miles round trip:(
I was teady to crack the whip on that deal but I ended up breaking the whip over my knee.
The boat was probably Noah's first attempt, fail.
The 115 Johnson had more rust than a Chevy Vega
The ski's were not fit for firewood
The PFD's were all dry rotted and waterlogged
The "galvanized trailer was rusted:confused:
The Bimini top had a 1" rip and covered in mold.
Naww, I pass. Not a deal if everthing is junk.
Now I'm mad I didn't stay home and finish painting the boat. Tonight for sure.

Frustrating and hard to walk away for "deals" sometimes. But, saves the giant headaches down the road buddy!

Paint on!:D

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Just a quick update. I finished painting the hull. :D Good news is the green tape EZ suggested works great and is easy to remove. Bad news is the blue tape I used to help cover up the side rails and the gunwell rails does not want to come off. I think its because I've had it on there for a week:confused: Well I'll get it off tomorrow and post some pics. Ya'll make sure to have your sunglasses.
Now to get the trailer ready.
I have 2 quarts of Gluvit and 2 gallons of Epoxy ready. Need to get foam and plywood. I can't wait to start on the interior.

I like the Blazing Saddles quotes. That movie was ahead of it's time.

Cool paint job. I've got to remember the green tape for next time. I had some tape also that was a beach to remove.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Question for ya'll. The trailer i bought is in good shape and needs minor repairs ( I hope ). It is galvanized and I was thinking of painting it to match the boat. Is this a no-no or would it be better to leave alone? I don't know how paint holds up on galvanized metal, and I know it needs special primer.

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

Yah, I think you just have to have the right kind of primer is all. I did just a little reading on it but stopped as I had already screwed up and painted mine without thinking about the galvanized part ahead of time.

Rock On!

Re: 18' Starcraft SS Restoration

I pulled a " Jason " and was up at 3 this morning. After a cup or four of coffee I went out to the garage and started fighting..I mean taking the blue tape off. I forgot to mention I wire brushed all the rub rails, gunwale rails, etc before I taped them. That way I didn't have to worry about messing up the paint if I did that last. I also used the blue tape to cover the voids left by the green tape. ALWAYS use green tape for any stripes or areas you want a crisp line. After this morning all I will use is green tape.

You Ready??? :D:D:D:D:D
