Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Thanks Glen...

Good eye... I didn't even notice that! I'll return it tomorrow and get the right stuff!

PS - That's the new version of LePages Green Contact Cement. It now comes in the plastic container vs the 1 qt metal container.

Thanks,

Jim

Cool, that will probably re seal and close up better than the paint can type, which should give it better shelf life.

Deck work looks great. Interior design changes seem to be a frequent trend around here which is not a bad thing at all.

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Ok... so that out of the way... here's the skinny: No go on the open concept! Yup... just not gonna work for us. After laying it out in the boat with the floor in and seeing how it looked and worked, it will just be too tight up front and the falcon is too narrow to get to seats beside the console for the kiddos.

So, devised a new plan that is really just a fairly significant update to what was plan A! :D

More to come over the next day or two....

Have a great evening fellas!

Jim

I bet your bow-tin is happy about that

lookin' forward to your new plan taking shape!

Deck looks good!

Are you still going to reshape the top of the transom?

I don't think so at this point... it got way more complicated and I have pretty much decided to leave the original splash well and transom cap in.

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Ok... some more progress... I think.

It seams murphy's law of unintended consequences struck today. So I cut the new dash today... it is kinda a radical departure from the norm here fella's so bear with me as it comes together! There are a number of pcs to make this work...

So when I cut the dash, the intent was to have a kinda cockpit concept.... well it does that, but it the Admiral says it also looks like a ladies under garment!

Agreed??

There will be sides coming up to meet the ends of the dash. Better water/splash/wind protection for the occupants. All the ply will be clad both sides in cedar and a number of coats of spar.

Problem is that I really liked going the simple open boat concept and I am concerned about putting to much weight up too high.... so I'm back to sitting out there and contemplating things some more today/tonight.

There will have to be a ton of wood in this boat to make this concept really happen and make it look sweet. Not really what I wanted to do.... so I got's-ta-tink sum mor....... hmmmmmmmm

The cool part bout these boats is they really are like a blank canvas when you get them down to the bones.... with the floor in place, the concepts of what COULD be done are endless. However, the practicality of most are probably questionable, the beauty of many are dicey and the usefulness of most to each of us is likely fairly few.

It's finding that sweet spot of practicality, usefulness and beauty that is the fun part!

Have a great day fellas!

Jim

Can you fab something out of aluminum that resides on the gunwales and meets the dash ...like an Islander?

and the "Falconder" design concept takes shape :D

I guess that's an appropriate comment from the Admiral. You did just finish stripping the boat. :D

Constructively commenting :)confused:) - What if you took the pantie liner and pull the down swoop bottom toward the stern, sort of creating an angled dash and console between the seats?

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Hey thanks fellas....

All sorts of discussion in the motion household... kiddo's and I are going to do a 3rd? variation on the open boat concept... we are concerned that for this little boat there will be to much mass up to high. We all agree that we will get the best design fit for our family one way or the other!!! It may seem like indecision... but it really isn't. It's just hashing out different options to work come up with something that works for us. No biggie. It really is quite interesting!

Gonna use parts of that piece for something in the boat!

Just way to high for this boat...

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Pull the down swoop bottom toward the stern, sort of creating an angled dash and console between the seats?

Taking this ^^^ 1 step further:
1) Make the top radius a little less severe, just a gentle rise & fall from gunwale to gunwale. What is the whale tail's height now, 12" +/-. NO IDEA what that is in metric, 2.54X12 +/-?? I'd try again w/ 3-4" max.

2) Then also pull the dash ends at the gunwale back towards the stern a little. Maybe the middle 70% is flat w/ the outer 15% on each side pulling backwards. An 8"X8" curve would probably be enough, maybe only 4-6" since the Falcon is narrow.

3) Pull the bottom 'leg' towards the stern in a gentle curve from the bottom of the dash until it hits the deck, like a center console in a custom hot rod. And like a custom hot rod, a few of the gauges could be in this center console.

Having the dash wrap around at the helm, and terminate into a similar wood accented gunwale plus the center console would give it a great deal of the 'feel' of a cockpit as you initially revised the revised plan to reflect in a further revised tweek.

Have I got that ^^^ about right there at the end?

To get the bow cover to actually cover the curved dash, you may need to move the dash plane forward, so that the curve all falls under the tin. Which might dictate how much pull back you plan for the sides of the dash.

BTW: Gorilla glue also now comes in a waterbased TiteBond3 formula. I can't tell if the GG you bought is it or not.

Depending on how you want it to look & how the center console starts to take shape, it could tie into the center of a helm bench rather then pedestals. And you could still put swivel/slide brackets under the seats.

The bent plywood would probably turn out best using several layers of 1/4" ply. And bending the overlay cedar would make it very challenging to use cedar. 1/4" veneer ply might be a better choice, which might price the curves off the plan, Value engineering & all :D

Just so ya know, I feel nearly 10.33% better spending a Canadian's money rather then a US compatriot's.......

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Ok... so here's where we are heading (sorta again!) Yikes...

Open bow is back on the table --- but stretched back and one pc --- as per the kids request. Originally, the plan was to have two seats there... but they would have been just tiny. So by making it one pc --- it is quite large now.

Center area: Stool is where the console will be. Bench seat with a flip up padded back... no individual seats --- resolves the boat width issue -- but both can fit well there.

Mom and Dad seats will be on a bench vs pedestal --- thus the 9 gal gas tank can fit underneath.

Deck behind M & D seat will have a curtain for easy accessibility and lightness. Little style added here. Room to walk behind back seat.

Ok... very different than how the falcon started life out as but, it's growing on me....

Cedar on the gunwales to add a little something different. Oh ya, under the front seating area will just be a whole pile of foamular! Not gonna use it for storage... just filling it full of buoyancy!

Lemme have it for the bowectomy!! :)

Have a great evening fellas!

Yes this is a wobbly pop problem. You even moved the bar stool into the boat. It's gonna be just fine, I'm just having trouble visualizing it all right now. Pass over a WP, would ya. :)

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

Yup... definitely a wobble pop prob!... So here are the console pieces: Note that the dash face angle is 15 degrees --- the same as the original dash in the boat. The face, sides and curved top will be cedar strip faced.

Dash face: (gauges are to be used... wheel is just a prop. Switches to go down left side...

Thought I'd share the poor man's circle scribbing technique... used a 1964 (period appropriate) ruler. Put a nail in it at the correct distance for the arc I wanted to create. Drilled a whole at the other end to snugly fit a pencil and drew the arc. For the smaller ones, I used a spar can as it as a pronounced lip at the bottom to get a nice arc everytime!

More to come this week as I assemble the console.

I decided to cut most of the pieces where I can so that I can spar them all at one time. Doing a things a little out of sequence... but I gotta get the layout out of my mind before I forget (which could be moments from now for all I know!! :)

Have a great Sunday fellas!

where'd you get those gauges? I like that surface mount style, especially in an older boat.

Hey Jim - Do I see two matching dash panels? Your ruler scribing is better than a piece of stretchy string, too. ;) Please don't forget the plan.

They were a gift from a place far, far away. Where the wind blows and it's cold 9 mths of the year!

Seriously, though they really were a gift! I love em too!

Re: 1960's Falcon Rebuild (New Title)

On the floor panels are you going to join them together?

Yup! Next up to cut is the doublers and it looks like the pedestals are going to be roughly where the doubles are... so I will make them extra large. Just picked up glue and an extra sheet of 3/4" for the transom.

Also decided the 9 gal tank is going to slide up under the bow area...

Going for a x-country ski with the family now... it's snowing lightly... nice atmosphere to be in the forest!!
