Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

Well I was thinking about the stringers a bit last night and today and decided I would cut the top 1/2"-1" off and see is an easier way presented itself to get them out.

I then took my nail-bar and hammer and started pealing the glass off of the sided of the stringers like a bananna:

I am hoping this will help in trying to get them out in good enough shape I can use them as templates for the new ones.

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

Seeing that I am against the weather/temp window, I was thinking I may just bed the stringers in PB instead of PL so I do not have to wait 72 hours for the PL to cure. :(

My q is, should I use the same mix (resin, 1/32 milled fibers and cabosil) to bed them in or is the mix slightly different as to not create any hard spots on the hull?

Thanks in advance!

That looks real nice. Don't freak out about a few little air bubbles. I am convinced that you need a vacuum bag system to completely get rid of them all.
Ya really don't worry about what I see there, it looks real good. Another thing people say don't fiberglass in the rain...reason being moisture in the air gets trapped under the matt or clothe and when it hardens you see bubbles that were not there too. Not much you can do in some situations, the curing process can cause some weird reactions too I seen years ago when i did it on a daily basis.

Keep it up, looks good

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

Finished getting the stringers out tonight.

I got 1 out pretty much in tact last night:

The others started coming out in chunks last night, however I did not finish as I got one of my knuckles good. I think I cracked it (shhhhh... don't tell my wife) ;)

Finished getting the rest tonight and got a bunch of grinding done:

Got a bunch more grinding to do in prep for Saturday and Sunday as the weather looks good for glassing the new stringers in :D

Also will get the new stringers cut and dry fit before the weekend.

Got in 3 hours of grinding tonight:

Doesn't look like much but at least that's 3 hours closer to getting to the point of getting the stringers in.

There are a bunch of areas that looks like they just dumped poly resin next the the stringers:

There are cracks in some of these spots which the resin just chips out in chunks.

In the areas of just poly, should I try to grind away as much of this as possible or just to the point where I will get a good bond with the new glass?

Others will disagree but I gotta give my opinion. The surface of the interior of that boat is one of the worst I've seen. All that lumpy resin and cloth will take the rest of your life and more grinding/sanding materials than it's worth. Clean it up as best you can and get some new stringers in there and glassed into place. Whatever you do is going to a zillion time better than the factory job was.

The main thing is to grind it down to good resin/glass. No Loose or dirty stuff. This will alow the new glass something to adhere to. Looks won't matter when the deck is back on but good adherance of the glass will. From what I see so far you're doing great.

EZ and WOG - Thanks for your input. It is much appreciated :)

It's really good to have the input as I'm sure you know how easy it is for your mind to start making things more difficult that it needs to be ;)

Saturday 10-08-11:

Got the stringers cut and dry fit:

Got the bottom edges pre-coated:

And got them bedded into the boat:

Sunday 10-09-11:

Did the fillets:

Boy I am glad I got an extra tub of Cabosil and 2 lbs of 1/32 miller fibers. The PB used a bunch

I also had picked up some 1/4 chopped mat to add to the PB too.

I was then able to get a layer of 1.5 CSM cut to size and glassed in:

IMG_4574Custom.jpg

That was about it as each day I needed to wait for the temp to come up before I could start the glassing.

Next I will cut the stringers to height and add a layer of 1708 biax and cap them with 2 layers of 1.5 CSM.

Nice job!!!!! Amazing how fast the Cabosil goes ain't it!!!! Not sure what your temps are but you can start glassin @ 50? As the temp rises it will start to set.

Thanks WOG! :D

Yes... it is amazing how fast it goes

The temps have been getting down to the low 40's at night so I figured I would wait just a little longer as to let the glassing surface warm up too. I'll keep that in mind.

At this point, I have 1 gal of resin left and just enough MEKP for it.

I found of that the manufacture of the resin is CCP in Kansas City MO. and has a shelf life of 90 days.

So i guess depending on the weather, I will just use up the last gallon and do what I can on the 1708 on the stringers and finish in the spring (if I do not have enough resin).

Sounds like a Plan. You CAN make a Tent out of a tarp and put a heater in there to heat up the surfaces then do your glassin when the heater is off. Give you about a 30 minute worktime but it's been done before. Depends on how much of a hurry you're in.

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

nice looking job there , like WOG said all you need is enough heat to get it started. I have been trying to do my glassing in the days that the temps rise for a few hrs and then run the heat after the temps have come up naturally. Helps a little on the fuel bill. But them days are numbered here as well. People say up the road 10 miles we had an inch of snow last week :( When I started to do the foaming the temps were not right so I put my stuff in a set tub filled with warm water to bring it up to temp. I must say I was more then impressed with the expansion rate. Keep up the fine job
