Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

I was able to get the stringers cut to height yesterday. :D

Sorry no pics. Just didn't have time. I'll get some tonight and post them up :)

I still could not cut a straight line if my life depended on it

Oh well... that's why I have a belt-sander :p

We have cooler temps and rain coming in for the next 3 days so I figured I would brush a coat of resin on the exposed top edges of the stringers as an added water proofing step and covered the boat good with a tarp to keep out any water.

What a day...

Got the tops of the stringers sanded level and a layer of 1708 on the sides:

Had a hell of a time with the weather and air pockets today

I'll have to look good tomorrow and see where to go from there...

Well the lack of concentration and interruptions are apparent in the 1708 layup on the stringers.

They will need to be ground down and another layer put on... Got air pockets all over the place. :(

Time consiming and a bit expensive learning experience

Yeah.. but I would rather play in the cold snow, not the itchy snow ;)

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

I have been doing a bunch of thinking about that last layup debacle and wanted to get some opinions on a thought I had.

Here is what I did last time. I tried to layup the entire length of the stringer, along with both sides and roll the air pockets out before the resin started to gel which obviously didn't go over to well

Seeing that this resto is a one man show, I thought of maybe instead of laying up the entire stringer length and both sides with 1708 and tyring to roll the air pockets out before the resin starts to gel, I would mix up just enough resin to wet out say a 24"-30" setion and then take as much time as needed to work the air out.

Then once I am satisfied, mix up another batch of resin and wet out another 24"-30" section and roll out the air pockets.

Also, if this is a good thought, should I overlap the 1708 sections a few inches?

What do you all think?? I am open to other suggestions as well.

Thanks a bunch in advance!

YOU should be able to wet out and roll out one side of stringer using 1708. Both sides at the same time could be an issue but one side 14' -16' long 6-8" tall = 16" strip of 1708. Either tape it on the stringer or use stick pins to hold it in place and let it drape down the side of the stringer and make the curve along the bottom. Mix up the resin and get after it. You can cut it into two sections if you want and over lap 2" in the center.

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

i am by no means an expert, but from looking at some of your pics it looks as if you have a bunch of high and low spots, could just be the photo and angle as well. i know when i started with mine i had some as well and could see the potential for a lot of air pockets so i stopped and went back to do a quick grind/sand of the area to be wet out and just hit all the high spots so that the were somewhat smoothed out with the low basically giving me somewhat flat surface. you could also try a wet out table and see if that helps you out some working in 4ft sections. there was someone here who also said about using a light dusting of some 3m contact adhesive just to tack the cloth in place so you could work it. i also did smaller batches around a pint size i believe, it was like 700ml so whatever that comes out to. I would measure out 1, then add the MEKP to it, then measure out another and left it sitting with the MEKP ready to go in the syringe, mix the one up i already added the MEKP to, then go to town. When that was used up i would measure another one out with the MEKP in another syringe, then keep on going so i always had one ready to go quickly if needed based on the outside temp. it was also easier for me as a 1 man show as well. i will probably do a wet out table when i finish the rest up though, seems a lot easier and faster, but i could be wrong there also...... trial and error and a lot of steering from the folks here thats for sure.

myself, i do not care for any type of snow, especially the itchy kind..... :)

Okay gonna chime in here. First off why did you have to "trim" the stringers? The norm is to use the old ones as patterns (If they come out okay which it looks like yours did) or do some measuring and get the height right. I've often use a straight board as a "hanger" across the hull and temporaly attach the stringers to them to assure a good flat and level deck. The gap between the stringer and the hull doesn't matter too much as long as the top of the stringers are correct.

Also Woody is correct...you should have no problem at all doing a stringer at a time with the 1708 before your resin kicks (and yes 1708 is MUCH different than working with CSM). What is the actual time (in minutes) do you have before the resin kicks? You may be adding a bit too much MEKP. What is the temperature you're working in?

The high and low spots were strike one on my part.

As for the MEKP and temp... the outside temp was about 68 degrees. The MEKP ratio I was using was 1.5%.

When I did some glassing last month, I was using a 1% MEKP ration and the outside temp was about 82 degrees and was getting about 15 minute work time.

hmmmm, at 2% with temp around 70 i was getting about 30 min work time after i poured it into a disposable roller tray.... i would have thought at 68% you would have had a longer work time then that. Are you using a roller tray or pouring it out form the mix pot?

Pouring from mixing pot into roller tray, then applying with a 3/8" nap roller.

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

It's been a while since I updated so I hope all had a Great Holiday Season!

At the beginning of December, I got my flywheel back (had new magnets put on it).

Thanks to the GREAT folks at Outboard Exchange!

http://www.outboardexchange.com/

I was told that the stators are in need of replacement so I have been tracking down and pricing used/rebuilt/new ones.

When I tested the new flywheel, sure enough, no spark.

I found some good info over at CDI

http://www.cdielectronics.com/

on trouble shooting so I am trying to find/ purchase (need the funds first) a meter or a DVA adaptor to test the coils, switchbox, rectifier ect...

I also have been tracing wires and fixing any frayed/broken wires I come across.

Also working on rebuilding the lounge seats. Got one pulled apart today and all the measurements taken.

The seat foam didn't look too bad. What do you think about spraying the bottoms with a bleach and water soloution to kill any mold that may be on there?

That's about it for now...
