Re: 1968 Star Trek-V 18 ft'er... "Going where no man has gone before" custom rebuild

Ok, I ordered some SC1100 epoxy today for the ply.. Anyone use it? Well I'm gonna see how it performs fo sho...

I sanded the runs out fairly easily, painted the second color and had my sons help rip off the masking tape. Well...... they pulled up some paint while doing so... no biggie.. I think I am going to eliminate the stripe anyway, I'm just not feeling it. I rounded the bow and like the way it looks although I didn't take a picture.. I will tomorrow.

I plan on replacing the bow wood support while it is upside down this week {much easier to work in there}, repaint the stripe and peeled paint.

I wish my LED lights for under the gunwale cap were here and I would install them while its upside down too.. I am playing around with running conduit or equivalent while upside down.. I need to let gravity help me while I can

Looks great. I'm not feelin' the stripe either as is. However, if you added a second one of a different color (like red or something) it could be really cool.

for what is worth i am not digging the bigger stripe but I really like the small pinstripe at the transition of colors...

Alright guys, long time no post!

I can use some advice right about now!! I'm at the point where the transition and the hull need to be dealt with.

I cut my floor, 3/4 {cheap stuff, going to be epoxied},, I purposefully cut the each board so the seam will split a rib for added support, I plan on supporting underneath at each seam to minimize give at seams, I also plan on installing seat posts at the seams to further minimize steping on a seam. I figure the seat base would span 6-8 inches on each side of a seam.

Ok, my problem, or question rather is......

I've cut the pieces a hair wide, but being that its 3/4 it sits up a bit above the notch in the gunwhale where the floor transitions up the hull.

I plan on sanding smooth the new deck even with that notch and filling the gap. I don't think Bondo would work on the issue of aluminum and boat flex, Thinking about liquid nails?

What product would be good to fill the void between the deck and hull? Keep in mind I will be laying vinyl flooring in so once the vinyl is married to the hull notch area, I am looking for a smooth transition and I am thinking of siliconing in a piece of garage floor seal to further seal the edge of the vinyl and gunwhale..

I need some expertise,,, I've tried looking through a bunch of other rebuild posts, but with 35+ pages of replies and none I looked at addressed this issue, I gave up and thought i would ask?

Anyway here are some pics since I've posted last

Ok, back to the boat pics...

I got rid of the ugly stripe,, glad I did. Put on a sticker or two

Glueing up the transom and coating with epx

2012-06-26_18-21-08_417.jpg

I experiment with epoxy and glue.... Used waterproof Elmers for part of the transom and laminating epoxy on the ears.. Want to see how the two hold up over time

2012-06-26_18-20-53_192.jpg

I removed the supports for the bow and beefed it up

2012-06-26_18-20-56_860.jpg

I didnt use gluv it, used Goop Coat-it on the rivots and seals.. I'm happy how well it spread, but I understand now about mixing the whole quart at once!!!! Thought I would rush through it in 10 mins.. YEAH RIGHT

Heres the Bow part I was talking about...

Work on this part when boat is upside down... much easier..

pulled this 6 inch shad out at work.. AMAZED

Here is a pic of the deck, keep in mind I am going to replace the casting deck in the near future, I just threw it in for looks

2012-07-18_13-29-01_732.jpg

I layed in the boat to show scale... Buddies didn't believe me how big this boat was, they swore it wasn't much bigger than their 14's.. Can you see the seam I'm dealing with in this photo? thoughts?

2012-07-18_13-30-11_248.jpg

You remember the horseshoe shape casting deck support,, WELLLLLL its history and I am going to put in a straight across piece of ply, I cut the ears off the horseshoe so I can rivot them to the hull for the exact fit I need. Also serves as a brace for the plywood replacement

The pic with me in the boat asking for help on the seams, that 2nd piece of ply really doesn't have an inch gap, I must of kicked it out of alignement climbing in for the photo.

On both sides of the deck it is a pretty uniform 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap as the other pieces of deck show in the photo, and you can see the transition I'm referring to where the deck and gunwhale meet

So you didn't ride off into the sunset. LOL Lookin' good! I don't think you have to or should try to seal the joint between the floor and side hull as you mentioned in your first post today.

I've got to do something, that gap would invite water into my foam...

I suppose I could terminate the vinyl to the edge of the ply, but that would certainly necessitate some seal to prevent water to run between the ply and hull creating a standing water issue and foam soaking issues.

This is why I was thinking of laying down and silicone/ 3m marine caulk a 2 inch garage door gasket covering that span

Hey cut, The vinyl I use on the floor is 74"wide, so when I do the floor I run it up the side of the hull an even amount on both sides. This forms a complete bathtub effect and all the water then runs to the back. The side panels then go down on the floor creating an overlapping shingle so water has to go down to the floor then to the back of the boat

Thanks Dozer, but this rig doesn't have side panels and I wasn't planning on putting any in.

I can still pull off the bathtub effect though, I will just have to terminate the vinyl up the gunwhale with some sort of rubber moulding for asthetics!...

But I still have the issue of a filler in the gap of the ply and the hull. I am 99% sure that if I do not support that gap the vinyl will tear and rip without a fountation underneath.

BTW, Dozer it was your boat and post that convinced me to go vinyl!

Thanks,,,

Duke, if you don't mind me asking, what part of my rebuild helped?

I know Dozers, EZmobee, Ga and a bunch more guys posts and rebuilds helped me in a lot of their experiences shared..

I copied my paint job by a member, though I can't remember which one...

Epoxy with filler might work for the seam Then fiberglass matt over the seam. Feather it in with the marine equivalent bond of bondo. If you don't have a nice flat surface for the vinyl I'm afraid you'll have wear problems.

Pretty cool boat.

I was thinking allong those lines, but a few concerns.

Fiberglass resin wont stick to the epoxy or so I've learned on this board.. Unless you suggest I fiberglass mat the epoxy resin and not use the poly?

Will the marine bondo stick to the aluminum and withstand flexing?

Hmm, does the mat and epoxy resin work well together?

I know one thing I will be doing some sanding!.

Thanks for all the brainstorming fellas

I've followed other rebuilds too. Still am. I just like your style. I did'nt like the solo stripe either. I have'nt seen the paint scheme thread yet. I like the clean work and the follow through. Thanks.
