I was thinking allong those lines, but a few concerns.

Fiberglass resin wont stick to the epoxy or so I've learned on this board.. Unless you suggest I fiberglass mat the epoxy resin and not use the poly?

Will the marine bondo stick to the aluminum and withstand flexing?

Hmm, does the mat and epoxy resin work well together?

I know one thing I will be doing some sanding!.

Thanks for all the brainstorming fellas

Yea polyester resin doesn't mix with epoxy resin, or is it vice versa. I'll pull out my fiberglass repair book and see. There are fillers you can use (peanut butter) to fill in cracks and such. So we are talking along the same lines. Roving or matt over the seam to give it strength.

What exactly are you looking to stick to the aluminum. If you're going from the deck to the sides there will be too much flexing. Could you use a trim piece instead?

uh, yeah, they build boats that way. called stitch & glue method.

Cut-- i have sorta the same issue since i'm using nautolex for floor and no side panels for bow half of boat. what i settled on is buying some redwood 1x6. gonna set the first 2 floor panels up on sawhorses and lay the redwood over them along the outboard edges, mark it to follow the curve and cut, then cut an "inner" curve roughly parallel to the outer one so i end up with curved floor edges maybe 2" wide then i fugre i'll epoxy/varnish the redwood since it sill be at deck level. this should hold down the edge of vinyl and hide the gappage. not sure if this plan would work for you but this seems to be the best solution for my build.

Thanks for the reply Barato..

I see what your saying about the redwood. It wouldn't need a filler, wouldn't need to be treated so extensively, being Redwood..

Though would still need to be sealed very well to keep water out of the the joint underneath. How do you plan on anchoring it to the floor? just rivot or screw to the ply underneath? Certainly not to the hull!

I will consider it and how far out are you from getting yours done? I to am going to use nautolex..

This is the Garage door seal I was thinking of using.. Fill the seam with a filler for a flat surface and I had planned on using RTV black silicone glueing and sealing it to the vinyl/hull..

The rubber would make the curve easily, and flex would not be an issue with the rubber seal and RTV silicone. Issue I have is the filler

Re: 1968 Star Trek-V 18 ft'er... "Going where no man has gone before" custom rebuild

i expect to be cutting mine this week. i'll prolly cut it a little oversize compared to the floor panels to fill gaps and so i can cut it down for tightest fit to sides of hull. and you're correct, plan was just to screw it to deck. will keep you posted on how it goes. i'm not trying to keep water out of the bilge, that's unrealistic on a boat that goes offshore, just trying to keep N'lex from peeling up at edges and to give it a neat finished look.

you just gave me an idea: for mounting alum gas tanks, you lay a couple of beads of 5200 etc along bottom and let em dry for tough "rails" that it will sit up on and thus not trap water under tank to start corrosion. i may try the same idea on the redwood to keep it a tiny bit off the deck without it being visible that i've done so.

Point taken about unrealistic goals...

Give me some pictures! I'll be checking on your boat for them..

Just looked at North Beach rebuild and those guys with gunwhale panels have it made!!!! He did a wonderful job.

I feel more confident in the approach now, thanks guys

Ok fellas,, update time...

With up to 110 degree days here in Bakersfield I've been pacing myself with .5 - 2hrs on most days.

I spent most of the time epoxying plywood... I experimented with fiberglass mat from GA thread. I was trying to fill the gap between the deck and gunwale..

2012-07-25_17-48-31_313-1.jpg

Decided it was a bad idea and sanded it off.. I did make these lips that accept the next sheet for increased stability, decreased give between two sheets. Also serves as a backing for future seat pedestals and foam compression

They work marvelously, only drawback is weight. But I'm going so light in this rig that it isn't an issue

I made a false floor for the battery compartment which I diamond plated for endurance

I reused the old foam. My boat hasn't seen water in 12 years and our climate is so much different I don't see an issue.. With 6 inchs of annual rain fall It shouldn't be a problem

Got the boys to do the work here

2012-08-03_09-38-22_743.jpg

Heres the lips working.. I coated with epoxy and screwed with Brass screws

2012-08-04_11-09-34_487.jpg

Heres the transition I am trying to decsribe. With the 3/4 ply there is now a 1/4 difference between the two.. I plan on now using 12 ft length of 2 inch threshold to trim it out

bought rivets at Fastenal for 37 bucks, used a forstner bit to countersink them

riveting when surprising well. no issues...

Epoxied the deck and added mat at the plywood seams for stability. I plan on epoxy sand for flooring with two coats of paint. So I epoxied in some matting to secure the joints. On top of the epoxy's, screws and lips I added..

Resto and fishies - Good combo. Nice work and nice fish. Are you trying to water seal or make a decent looking edge between the floor and hull?

Originally thought about sealing the sides but was talked into reality.

I will try and seal the sides with some rubber, sealant threshold combo but I have bigger fish to fry.. if water leaks underneath down to the bilge im going to live just fine a

Just a heads up...

I don't really feel like epoxy/sand/paint is a good "finish" material to end with. On my rigs I'll be adding snap in carpet. If I wasn't I'd be going with either DuraBak (very $$$) or vinyl.

Just thought I'd throw that out there:)

Oh thanks for that Jas... I was under assumption you were pleased with the sea nymph results...

Ill take your advice and move back to vinyl..probablly easier and less labor too

Yah, I like it plenty but just not as a finish material. If you drag a cooler across it a few times the paint will start to scrape away. That's why I'm going snap in carpet. Vinyl will be super durable and great for a strict fishing rig.

and after working with the Durabak for a while, i think vinyl will be a lot easier on knees etc, esp with kids aboard.

not sure you'd really even need to snap the carpet in if you cut closely enough to hull shape and bound the edges.

Re: 1968 Star Trek-V 18 ft'er... "Going where no man has gone before" custom rebuild

I have changed my deck finish plans a dozen times by now. With suggs from y'all and advice I stared at the boat for an hour contemplating the floor.

I am now convinced with vinyl. I am going to add side panels and aluminum angle as Embozee has perfected.

It is the best method for all purposes..

I have the inside painted and the casting deck completed .. more pics to come

As I said, with the guidance of you vets I'm going to be adding a side panel/shelf the length of the gunwhale using the Embozee technique
