Re: 1975 evinrude 9.9 fuel pump prob?

ok, it's not bound up.

Bk, the timing marks I'm confused about are the ones on the timing plate. Iput white out on the flywheel marks & they show up well. The points only have about 1hr on em but I checked em again today anyway. They wouldn't wear that quick, would they?

jmendoza, thanks for all the info. I cleaned the points like you said(COOL TRICK). Timing checks out with an inductive light. I've tried many new sets of plugs. The needle, after days of adjusting seems best at 1 1/4 turns out. Yes I used a new head gasket & properly lapped the head. Visual check today shows nice clean seals all over. I installed a new stainless steel thermostat during rebuild & it is working properly when the engine is up to temp.

Today I started it up, got it warm. Did a compression test. both cylinders are @ 75psi. cleaned & gapped the points, new plugs. This vid was made at 6pm central time today. It shows that playing with the choke was no help & just how bad it idles.

Tomorrow I'm gonna get new soft plugs & re-do the carb, cause I'm outta ideas. I almost hope I did screw it up. I'll keep checkin in tonight.

I can't thank yall enough! I know we'll eventually get this thing right.:):):)

I'll throw a dart, pull the plugs after it dies and shake them onto your hand looking for traces of water?

If you were to throttle-up while choke is halfway out would it still die? The reason I ask is that was what my 77 15hp Rude would do. I went back into the carb and reset the float drop to the full 1 1/2" and that stopped that. On a cold start I do have to go full choke until it starts and then to about half while it warms up; going to far in with the choke is a sure die fo it. Once its been warmed up it will crank and run every time.

Will Bark, I've played with the choke until it's WAY TO FAMILIAR if ya know what I mean. I'm startin to think about it in the shower, LOL! When cold, I choke it full & ease it off as it warms up. After that, chokin it is instant death. BTW, did you get the PM I sent about fishin?

Bk, I started with the sealoc recommended Champion plugs, and eventually went to the Leeroy recommended NGK B6HS. It had brand new ones in it for todays vid!

I agree, choking ain't going to help that. Sounds like it is seriously missing or the timing is off. Also sounds like mine when I ran those Champion UL81Cs that they specify. Mine only worked well with the NGK B7HS spark plugs. Don't really know why. What plugs are you using?

Also, Just ran it up to temp & took out the plugs. Shook em out on one of those oil absorbent pads that are plentiful 'round here since the oil spill. All fluids were absorbed & no water was left behind.

And that's the opposite from what i've never knows, people chuck the ngk's in favour of the champions. I ran UL81C's in mine before I converted. More darts, flywheel magnets nice and strong? Jeez, I feel like shipping you my magplate/flywheel to test with, if I had a carb i'd send it too.

Re: 1975 evinrude 9.9 fuel pump prob?

When I put the flywheel back on, I have to wrestle the magnets to align it on the key. Is there a way to test thier strength?
Will Bark only lives 2 hrs away. I'd drive up there if he'd be willin to let me swap out for testin purposes. I don't wanna start shippin stuff international, YET, LOL! But I really appreciate the offer!:)

Probably ok then, sure sounds like a misfire or timing. I just put a screw driver on the magnets, usually pretty tough to pull it off, if not then they are weak.

Another thumbs up on the NGK's

And spark is consistant on the timing light on both cylinders?

Re: 1975 evinrude 9.9 fuel pump prob?

I'm runnin the NGK B6HS, slightly cooler heat range, but it's what Leeroy said. wonder if the B7HS would make the difference? BTW, I still Laugh Out Loud when I think about your Zip Tie! You should PM me with just how that happened!

Straight from his site:

It has been found that by switching to NGK B6HS spark plugs (& in the next higher heat range) the fouled plugs go away & the engine run s better.

6,7, either one should work.

I'll pm ya.

Just so you know, Scanman, I am pretty sure the B6HS is a hotter plug than the B7HS. I would think either would work for you, but that is my understanding of the NGK plug heirarchy. Champions go hotter with higher numbers and NGKs go colder.

The B7HS is the cross referenced plug for the Champion UL81C.

Re: 1975 evinrude 9.9 fuel pump prob?

My Rude is a 77 and has the c/d ignition and the flywheel has too many magnets in it; being an electric start, also has no mag plate as such; mine is called a stator I think. Got your PM and may take you up on the offer; is that the public launch at the upper end of Graveline?

Re: 1975 evinrude 9.9 fuel pump prob?

Thanks Opt, you're correct. Leeroy said that the B6HS was the next hotter plug. Guess I had a Mental Typo.

Will Bark, You too are correct. The electric start flywheel has one major difference. It has an extra row of teeth to engage the starter. I'm not sure if it has the mags or not. If tomorrows carb rebuild doesn't help, I'd sure like to swap em for a minute to see if that's my prob. The boat ramp across the street from me is abandoned since Katrina & the parkin I spoke of is the corner lot next door to me(also cleared by Katrina). The owner Lives up in Byhalia MS & has been by several times. We took it upon ourselves to cut & maintain it so we could see the bayou. He said we could use, but not abuse it. I have three trailers parked there now. I can send pics if ya want, but we have full permission to use it. Now that cooler weather is here we're gonna get out the horseshoes & build a bonfire, all with owners permission.

It seems like everyone has added good comments.

In the video the motor seems to be idleing very roughly, just like it is only firing on one cylinder. I am sure you have probably checked this before, but could you possibly have corroded wiring connections at a coil or the plug wire connections?

Re: 1975 evinrude 9.9 fuel pump prob?

I'm honored Machinist. Thanks for replying, & thanks for all the free knowledge you have on the web!:D:D:D

According to the plugs Both cylinders are firing at least intermittently. One coil is new I ohmed out the other & it matched the resistance of the new one. Ran it at night several times to see if a spark was jumpin to ground & saw nothin. Also can't hear any tell tale tickin noise. I am using the old plug wires, but they passed the ohmmeter test. I made one of your spark testers & the spark is clean, blue & jumps 3/8". I have done away with the factory connector on one of the coils, but I'm an electrician by trade so I'm sure the connections are well made & the wires are going to the proper places. I guess I could replace the wiring harness, but in my mind it'd just be a guess. What're your thoughts?
