Thanks for the condolences brutha, I figure by the time the Mariner is done, say 2015, I'll start looking for a 2000-2003 Cobalt 206, the slightly smaller sister to my 226. I'd like to restore one that I could get at a decent price... Cobalts are some fine crafted boats for sure... MBS is a crazy disease is it not! :rolleyes:

Sure, i did. my ultimate fleet is a tinny, Cobalt Glasser and of course a good 50 ish wood chris craft

while there are some of you that are suffering from lack of rain, in this small section of georiga right above and around my house it seems to do nothing but rain.

So in lieu of being able to do much else, the side panels have been covered in vinyl and the TNT is undergoing a reseal and rebuild.

Question for all the painting experts out there, with all the rain that there has and is here and humidity being high when the sun is out, is it ok still to paint while there is a break in the rain or is it better to hold off until the rain has stopped for a few days before spraying what i have to spray?

Hi rr,

I am no painting expert, but I do have a suggestion...check the paint manufacturers spec sheet...either on the can or the web...they should specify at what range of temps/humidity you would be good to paint...

Your welcome...:)

Yes, I do bodywork for a living, but I do the grunt work...beating, banging, grinding, pulling/straightening structure, bondo, sanding, repairing/replacing panels, welding, etc.etc.,...I get it ready to be painted...
...The finesse work, like painting...even though I have shot my share of finishes in the past, I leave that to the true professionals that do this everyday and stay on top of the whats, hows and whys of painting...it is not only a practiced art, but a science...the true painting gurus, like the one we have in our shop, can make magic happen with automotive finishes...:D

yes it is a real treat to watch the really good paint guys do their thing....... but you provide the canvas their work or all the pain in the world would not help it to be the true masterpiece

the proof is in the pictures.......

side panels being covered. THe first one we did the foam first then the vinyl and the second one we did the foam and vinyl together. the second was much easier to do and faster. The first one we also did the bottom first then the curves, which to me was a mistake and harder. not sure which is the better, preffered or best way, but on the second one we did the curves and angles first then the others and that was easier and faster and i think turned out better.

at least something was able to get done with all this messed up weather

So i do not think the trailer i have for the SC was the right one as it seemed to be a little short even extending out the bow support all the way. doing that leaves the bow VERY close to the back of the tow vehicle, not a good thing if you ask me. So searching the net i found a guy with a donor glass hull and nice trailer. needs some welding done on the fenders where they attach for the back supports which should be a fairly simple fix, good tires, rims need cleaning, but overall great shape and an absolute jas bottom feeder price.

Anyone need a windshield or gas tank???? that's all that there is really except some gauges. so it will be going to the landfill......

It says Bayliner on the tag, the boat is a 19ft so the trailer should work nicely, i hope then sell of the tilt trailer.

Yesterday we got a pretty good scare, again due to the sever thunderstorms we continue to have here. about 50ft from the house lightning struck a huge oak tree about 50-60ft tall. Sounded like a transformer exploded at my front door and shook the house. It split the tree at the top and where it traveled along the roots it blew the dirt, leaves and pine needles away. Took out the garage door opener, have to replace that, the tree needs to come down now, blew a breaker for the garage and the master bath GFCI. What a bright flash of light to boot. Scared the carp out of all of us...

thank the good lord that is all that was done and he watched over the family and kept us protected :)

Wow, scary stuff having a tree so close get blasted like that...glad to hear the important stuff is good to go...Amen!

BTW, I am sending a PM your way, later today, gotta take off for the daily "grind", right now... "bout the tank...curious...

And those side panels look absolutely Awesome! Very nice...

Ok, been awhile but i have been traveling and dealing with some family matters. I did get some paint on the misc pieces along with a color change to a navy blue. still have to do the hull. But i seem to have messed myself up. I am using the WOG recipe from page 10 in his thread and the first 2 coats were coming out nice, see pics below. then stupidly i read the can it said to thin out for spraying using mineral spirits. so i switch from acetone to mineral spirts. now the next 2 coats look like carp. Forgot, i am spraying it and not rolling it. It does not seem to flow as nicely as it did with acetone, it does not have the gloss shine to it anymore, it looks like speckles not lie orange peel but as if it was over spray.

so my question is did i mess up with the change over to spirits? can i swtich back to acetone and get the original results. Or better yet, can someone help me out with suggestions on how to fix it. i plan on wet sanding it with 600 tomorrow and spray another coat on using acetone unless someone else has some better suggestions. PLEASE HELP..........


this was the first 1st coat, i am waiting for the drying to take pics of the last 2 that went on with mineral spirits.

ok, not the best photos, but up close after the second coat it was shiny, smooth and no orange peel.

please help paint gurus
